Texas for you...pretty ridiculous.

California may be considering the full legalization of marijuana, but in Texas, a student was recently suspended from school for having red eyes. In Trophy Club, Texas, 16-year-old Kyler Robertson chose to attend classes just two days after his father was stabbed to death. His mother had urged the grief-stricken boy to stay home, according to a report on the local Fox News station, but Kyler said he wanted the comfort of his friends.

Administrators at Byron Nelson High School didn?t let the boy stay on campus for long. Because of his irritated eyes and, they claimed, the smell of marijuana on his clothes, school officials said they suspected Kyler of using marijuana and sent him home Tuesday with a three-day suspension. The school said it would lift the suspension within two hours if Kyler passed a drug test ? which he did. (More on Healthland: Find out why some state sheriffs want to know what drugs you?re taking)

Kyler?s mother says she had notified school officials and her son?s teachers about her husband?s murder.

Drug use at school can certainly cause problems? but zero-tolerance policies like Byron Nelson?s aren?t the solution. They tend to be ineffective? or even counterproductive. Research shows that students who feel closely connected to a school community are less likely to have drug problems, and zero-tolerance policies have been found to reduce school connectedness.

Worse, Byron Nelson?s policy seems to controvert the notion of innocent until proven guilty ? and the idea that people should be treated with common sense and decency. (One has to wonder, too, whether it?s worth sullying a student?s academic record because he might have smoked pot two days after his father was stabbed to death.)

If the school had been concerned for his safety, it seems to me that a trip to the hospital would have been their best bet. If his emotional health were the problem, being sent to a school counselor?s office might be advised. Or maybe someone could have given the kid a hug and the chance to talk to a trusted teacher.

The next Trophy Club kid who loses a parent probably won?t be seeking solace at school, but at least the local stoners won?t reject him for showing normal signs of sadness.

Lets see,,,,Eyes bloodshot,,,clothes smell like pot,,,hmmmm, could be, yeah, id say hes been smoking some weed. Sounds like proper procedure to me, send him home. In todays politically correct environment I guess a blood test should have been done and then wait a 3 days then send him home, only to have the test double checked, then have a separate expert read the results.

yeah, I see nothing wrong with this.

You pass the drug test, suspension is lifted.

I see nothing wrong either. They gave him the chance to prove em wrong. He did they corrected the situation.

ahh this was just posted because it was somebody smoking pot that got in trouble, R13 wants us to take up for the kid due to the circumstances, it doesnt matter what happened the kid shouldnt have been smoking pot and going to school. UNTIL its legalized people are going to get in trouble for it.

Guess you didn't read it, he didn't smoke pot, the drug test came back negative. I'm "taking up for the kid" because he did nothing wrong and the school acted like idiots. I could guarentee the school knew that his dad had been murdered, yet couldn't put two and two together to think maybe the red-eyes came from the kid crying/not sleeping because he dad had been stabbed to death 2 days before - yeah I know they "claimed" they smelled weed on him, which was probably just bull.

Even if the kid had been, which he wasn't, no one with a brain should care...he just lost one of his parents, ****. They harassed the kid with this bull**** "no tolerance" junk and it backfired on them, a suspension could have had long effects on the kids academic career, as if he didn't have it hard enough.


And yes, I say Texas because they breed stories like this, hell they changed entire history books to a whacked conservative view on it leaving out entire parts of history/rewording it to fit with what they want..that was just last year I believe.

1) That's limited to a urine test and 2) it takes awhile to flush out of your system, the kid took the test with an hour or so of the suspension. Ever cross your mind that he just didn't smoke pot? The school was just stupid and harrassed the kid, they're the ones that's wrong with this country.

well obviously they gave him a urine test and those things are always screwy. 2. you can eat an entire watermelon the day of a **** test and pass it, just FYI. I know the kid didnt do that and its irrelevant, just figured id throw it out there haha.

Back when I was a truck driver I knew several guys who smoked pot every single day and a couple who did pills. Only one ever failed a DOT drug test, even the ones that they had taken at the office without warning. Lots of tricks to passing a urine test. One guy even had a method of getting a single drop of bleach into the cup. he said it messed up the test results. He never failed one and he was a heavy daily smoker.

On the other hand, these zero tolerance policies in schools are stupid. They take common sense and throw it out the window. The kid should not have been suspended and should not have been required or felt it necessary to take a drug test. He should have been treated with some human decency and common test.

I think the last part is what R13 was saying. That common sense would have worked much better in this situation than suspending a kid.

The kid went home for 2 hours. If they would have suspected the kid was using drugs and made him take a drug test without notifying his mom there would have been a uproar to. The kid may have been a good kid with ******* family that smoked around him. If the school folks really did smell weed on him for whatever reason they had to do something. I don't think the school people where doing anything with bad intent. They allowed him to clear his name. I think they did all right. Definitely worse horror stories than this in the world of zero policy


I also agree with Gotch on the zero tolerance policies read to many times about kids being suspended for having a pocket knife or some or ridiculous stuff.

Agree and disagree in todays world IF you do not have a firm set of rules in place and stick to them the next person that is sent home for a pending drug test has this case to point to as a bases for discrimination it comes down to 6 of one a half dozen of the other
