What would you recommend as a horn for some GPA 390 drivers? (1.4" throat)
I need them to run from 400 to 7K.

There are several on eBay at the moment. A 1003 would be quite a beast.
A 311-90 are nice too, but pricey.
Yes, I like the look of those 1003's & looks like they would work out to be about $1000 a pair....pretty much the same as the MR94B's.
I say the 94B's as the info sent by GM tells me that the dispersion of the other Mantaray horns seems to be very limited....wouldn't this give a beamy sound?
What would you guys go for?....the 1003's or the MR94B's? Would they sound the same or is it a matter of dispersion characteristics?
I'd go with the multi-cell, that's my personal preference. I have a pair of 803s that I like a lot, but I like the 1005s even better.
The 300Hz horns are big, don't forget that. They also tend to have a larger midrange hump than the 500Hz multi-cell so you'll have to deal with that in EQ or crossover. $1000 for a pair of 1003 seems on the high side, as the 300Hz horns are usually less sought after. But it's whatever the market will bear. Over the past few years on eBay the 500Hz multi-cell have sold for about $50 a cell. The 300Hz horns $30 or less per cell. I think I paid $25 a cell for mine, with throats.
I'm sure there are others who prefer the other style horns. I just have a love for the big, wide open sound of the multi-cells.
BTW, what are you using for tweeters? Gotta be pretty serious.

My Favorites are the Multi's too. They are quite large though. If you have the room I say go for it. My 1005A's tar filled's are my favorites at the moment. When i finnish my project I may have a new Fav.511E time will tell.
I never really liked the 803 Multi much though.I always thought the 311-90 sounded better IMO.Could have been the XO,amps,etc....so not a valid point as I didn't listen to them A & B'd on the same sytem.
But you gotta love the Big Altec multi-cells bigger the better and the tar-filleds are the best sounding IMHO :D :2thumbsup:
You may want to consider the 'sleeper' of the Altec multicells, the 203B. There is a pair for sale in the classified section. For the phenolic based drivers they sound good, preferable to my ears compared to the 1003.
If you have basic woodworking skills you could build a pair of conical horns. A large pair of conicals sound very open and natural with the phenolic drivers. Kudos to Steve Schell for showing me the light on the conical horns! :2thumbsup:
Looks like the multicell's have it!
Panomaniac....I'm using APT200's....nothing too fancy, but they sound quite good to me.
This project is for an upgrade to my modded La Scala's.....for the mid range. This is their weakest link. If I can improve this then I believe it will improve everything else as well.
They just don't have that effortless mid sound that a big speaker needs.
The search begins!! Thanks all.
None of the 300 hz multicells were designed or marketed for the size of rooms we have in our homes. We can disagree on personal preferences, but not that one horn is for long-throw and the others not.
Any of the 300 hz multicells will dwarf your LaScala bins.... The 311-60 is better suited size-wise to that cab, and does perform admirably well with the Altec phenolic midrange drivers. They will do your 400hz. with ease. Plus, they would be much simpler to ship to the "Land of Oz". Enjoy!
Kind of hard to recommend a specific horn when you don't define the app..........
Well, 'beamy' is relative in that if it fits the needs of the app it's just right, but in a typical HIFI app 60x60 works well as does 40-80 to 90. For longer listening distances then, narrower is better, ergo wider is better for sitting closer in smaller rooms or for many HT apps.

(Roughly) what size for a 400Hz 90x40 conical?
Not sure what you are saying, but 10 cell muilticells are not long throw, and 203's are.
I've used 1003's in small clubs, only complaint was about the size. 203 would NOT have worked. At least not without multiples.
Are they all kinda big for the average living room? Yes but the issue is much more pronounced with 203's and the tight pattern.
Isn't it so hard to make a decision?
Yes, I had a look at the size of these things (1003's) & they are quite large, but that isn't really a problem in my room. The issue is, as you say, with getting them here. One E Bay seller wants $1600 for shipping! Outrageous - half as much again as what the horns are worth.
I looked at the 311-90 & the 311-60 from the Altec Pro web page & they look much more suitable.
My application is for home hi-fi music listening. My room is 9m x 6m x 2.7m high. I usually sit about 6 m from the speakers with the speakers placed on the 6m wall.
After hearing further comments I felt that the 1003's may be too large for this size room, what I mean is that I might not get the best from them in a room this size, plus there is the huge shipping cost involved. I like the look of the 311's in terms of overall size & they will obviously handle the 400 Hz crossover with ease.
What about one of these - Fc is 260.
Timber Tractrix Horn.
Those are made for a cone driver, right?
(Strange, that shots looks just like the inside of my garage)
Hey John, You may want to inquire about these they look to be in nice shape just have to inquire about the shipping charges.
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
OK, assuming the speakers are ~backed up against the wall, then a ~4.076 m listening distance may prove a little smoother overall. Speakers then would be about this far apart and ideally would be offset along the wall to average out any sidewall eigenmodes (standing waves), so ideally the listening 'sweet spot' would shift also.
Anyway, lacking sufficient geometry skills to quickly calculate desirable horn patterns, I'll leave you to either calculate them or do as I do and make a scale drawing of the room and with compass and straightedge, find what speaker toe-in and arc patterns cover/overlap the listening position without any first reflections in front of the listening position and let this guide your selection rather than size, long/short throw, etc..

Have you considered 805's?...
Others may be able to chip in, but I'd almost say at your likely levels, you could load thr 805 down to 400Hz and be OK. Maybe use a 299 diaphragm.
I've 805s if you wanted to try, BUT you'd need to get them to and from Sydney, being tar filled, heavy too!
Many thanks for the offer, but I may have to postpone this for a while. A set of 311's that I had my eye on just sold for $1197....then you have to add shipping on top of that!
The combo with the drivers is likely to be the best part of $2000....a bit steep for me at the moment.
Cheers,
John

If anything as a tip, buy two singles.
I'll PM you about shipping.
Worth a mention, is the 329
Can often be bought cheaper than the 311, but not as common.

Hate to go negative here, but I dunno , I just don't see any of these big radials ( sectorals ) offering solid performance down to 400hz ( without a bit of EQ ) .
Here's ( a blowup of the FR for ) the 329a , which has the same 220 hz flare rate as the 311-90 .
http://www.hostboard.com/forums/hbmc.../2010/10/3.png
Maybe that @ 10db an octave rolloff below 600hz works for the OP and his 400 hz Xover point / otoh, maybe not .
Personally, I'd rather see FR that's flat down to 400hz so that I can choose how to mess round with the rolloff, via caps & coils .
<> cheers
How come you just don't settle for the more common small format drivers and a either a 511 or 811 horn? I've seen these in small auditoriums. These drivers are more than adequate for a home or even a decent sized room.
Being a "wise guy," is that AUS, NZ, or USA dollars?
Hey John $1197 is actually cheap for a pair of 311-90's all the pairs I have seen usually sell for $1400-$1800 it's always the shipping that's the killer.I figured they being in California on the west coast that the shipping is a short trip over the big pond and for a few hundred, maybe doable.;)
Did you get a qoute for them ?
That is pretty funny :) But the I still like Paul Hogan's commercial on US television, "put another shrimp on the barbie."
Sorry, yes, I did forgot about the that little part the enhancing the sound of a La Scala. The La Scala mid K91 horn & driver was supposed to have been the "tour de force" of Klipsch R&D engineering.
A 300Hz horn is going to be real imposing in any home room. I guess you will just have to "seek and ye shall find(that is a bit of out of context, but I think you will get the meaning)" and maybe keep your eyes open and maybe a pair will turn up somewhere. But that shipping is going to be deal breaker.
BTW(by the way): I had a chance to meet Paul Klipsch years ago when he was still alive at the AES convention in Los Angeles. I put my hands on one of their Belle Klipschs just feel the mirror smoothness of the finish. This one was walnut. Then Mrs Klispch came along right away and wiped it down.
