Re: I think this is bull.
I think it's bull that we give free handouts to illegals over people who are american citizens that are academically qualified.

This.
As liberal as I tend to be, and as much as I believe illegal immigrants should be given a chance in this country, to stand in the way of someone born/raised/legal in this country getting a higher education in favor of someone who has not taken the steps to become a legal US citizen, is ludicrous.
When the illegals are legal, then they can feel free to enroll in public universities. I'm sure the colleges will be glad to take their money for 4 years in exchange for a piece of paper just like they do anyone else. Until then, their first priority shouldn't be a college degree, but a green card. What would be so wrong w/an illegal applying for a student visa and taking classes? At least a student visa would show they're willing to stand up and be counted by our government so we know that they're here and what their intentions are.
Re: I think this is bull.
Yeah, R13, can't agree with you here. Legally and academically qualified residents are more of a priority than illegals. It only makes sense.
Re: I think this is bull.
Illegal is the key word...shouldn't even be in the country, much less taking away opportunities of college education from LEGAL citizens.
How on earth can you possibly think this is bull r13?
Re: I think this is bull.
Every state should do this honestly
Re: I think this is bull.
It's bull for several reasons....
1) The dumb remark of it being "a handout". We're talking about giving a kid an education, there's nothing fucking wasteful about that, to say that just because they're illegal is asinine. It never said they weren't paying, so how that could be a handout is beyond me, it even says they pay higher tuition.
2) They're paying out-of-state tuition, which is a lot more than in-state.
3) If they're getting accepted over legal ones, that most likely means they are testing better/have better grades. Maybe the legal ones should study a little harder and it wouldn't be a problem.
4) Undocumented doesn't mean they jumped a damn fence either, it specifically said that some have lost their citizenship or can't affirm it. So we just screw them over by instituting this... for what?
5) Who the hell do we think we are saying one kid takes priority over another kid based on a piece of paper? That's all it is too before any of you try to argue it, the legal ones haven't earned anything, they just happened to be born here - so it's tough luck for others who weren't fortunate enough to be born here and lets make it harder on them then before by screwing up their education.
6) I see the bitching and moaning about being them being such a drain on us, but when some try to get a good education in this country, we do shit like this...it's nothing new, we basically invite them here and treat them like scum, just more hypocrisy.
7) When we fix the system from the clusterfuck it is trying to get into this country, then we might have a leg to stand on with something like this.
Re: I think this is bull.
Yes lets make it easier to get citizenship. That will solve a whole lot of problems.....

How wouldn't it? It would be drastic, it takes years and thousands of dollars generally for people to come here legally, the system is screwed - that's a huge reason why illegals are here illegally, they can't get in legally.
Re: I think this is bull.
Citizenship and being here legally are two totally different things, and no, being here legally isn't requires nothing similar to earning your citizenship.

I said it before and I'll bring it up again...if you're undocumented/illegal, and are interested in pursuing an education...get a Student Visa. Plain & simple. That way, they may not be full citizens, but we know that they're on US soil and what their purpose in the US is. I don't think that's an unreasonable requirement, R13.
Not all people who come to the US to get a college degree stay in the US to work, so I'm not really all in favor of pushing for "full citizenship". If they want to come here on a Student Visa, get their education, then either extend it to get a Masters or Doctorate, that's fine. BUT--if they choose not to, and they're not a legal US citizen, they can be deported with degree in hand to their home country. When the Visa runs out--it's time to leave. That's true for any student from any country coming in here to get an education, even Canadians...for instance.
Now, in the meantime of getting their education that they want to apply for full citizenship, they pass all the tests, and they're sworn in--then they get to stay here as citizens and pay taxes and work here like anyone else.
I don't really see what's so hard-hearted or unfair about what I'm suggesting.
Re: I think this is bull.
As in obtaining either, it's basically the same as in redtape and hoops to jump through, not talking about the end result.

I don't think you understand it isn't cut and dry as "get a visa", they are denied or voided for a laundry list of reasons...they aren't easy to come by at all.
Re: I think this is bull.
Student Visas
Qualifying for a Student Visa
The Immigration and National Act is very specific with regard to the requirements which must be met by applicants to qualify for the student visa. The consular officer will determine whether you qualify for the visa. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate that they properly meet student visa requirements including:
* Have a residence abroad, with no immediate intention of abandoning that residence;
* Intend to depart from the United States upon completion of the course of study; and
* Possess sufficient funds to pursue the proposed course of study.
Yeah thats not that hard to understand.
Re: I think this is bull.
Dude that's not all there is to it, that's after you quality for it and met the requirements, there's a reason why it says "additionally" before listing those.
Re: I think this is bull.
That was small sample I copied. Why I gave the link for those who want to read it.

If that's the case, and they want an American college education, and a Visa isn't an option--then apply for citizenship, pass the tests, get sworn in, and get an education as an American citizen.
One of 2 ways to do it if they really want to do it the right way. If they're smart enough to attend college, then I'd presume they'd be smart enough to pass the citizenship exams and be sworn in. Not a major stretch. Then, they'd be able to get an education regardless of this law, no matter where it's passed.
Re: I think this is bull.
The problem with r13 is he thinks the world is some fairy tale where everyone is supposed to get along. The problem with that is, its not that way. People are supposed to be documented for a reason...a security reason. Not because we want to keep people from bettering themselves, because we want to protect our own. This is not the United States of Earth, as much as you want it to be.
If they really want that education that bad, they will do what it takes. Like Cane said, if they are smart enough to get a college degree, then they shouldn't have a problem getting the Visa.

Thank you for the backing, but I have to disagree w/the sentiment that we aren't a world-wide country. We're the most powerful country on the earth still, and people across the globe look to us for help. Now...does that mean we shouldn't protect our borders? No--that'd be irresponsible.
We need to be cautiously responsible regarding our borders, but we shouldn't be xenophobic and unaccepting as a culture either. That's a really hard concept for most in this country to grasp.
