I'm ready just to start forfeiting at halftime. :( I saw those size differences earlier in the week and was going to post them. UT's heaviest LB I think is 227 and Bama's is around 260. The DL averages 263 LB's. They need to get bigger, faster, stronger, and get more bodies.
Two things.
First. Any WR going against Art Evans should have career highs.
Second. I have never seen someone blowup on Mark Ingram (then also level the QB) like Herman Lathers did.
UTVols and I played a game of dueling texts tonight each cursing Art Evans and everything about him. He's abysmal. Lathers played great. Proud of him.

Brent Brewer didn't do too bad in the first amount of big action I have seen from him this year.

I'm all for Dooley and think he can get it done. Bama was never in this bad a shape though. They always had decent talent on the roster because AL high school talent is so much better than TN. Even when they had reduced scholarships from probation I don't think they got to almost 20 below capacity. It was more like 12 or so short wasn't it? well, it may look dreadful right now but UT has shown they can play with any team in the nation (at least for a half) so things have to be looking up for the future.
I agree with what everyone has said. I really don't want to even talk about Art Evans because this guy couldn't start at Pound, JIB, CW, Appy, Ervinton, etc, etc, etc.
And Biggin is exactly right, why on earth is he covering Julio 1 on 1, he gets no push at the line and within 10 yards is already burnt and running for his life. I have said everygame this year is is the worst DB I have ever seen play on the collegiate level. I don't know which Rivals Scout he had to blow to even get a 2nd star, let along a 3rd. Dude needs to be on the sidelines next week.
DD is going to get it done folks, just be patient (that is hard for me to do). We have played 7 great 1st halfs this year and 4 pitiful 2nd halfs and that shows our depth issues.
Enough whining, on to South Carolina this week. Anyone want to wager than Alshon Jeffrey sets the SC record for receiving yards in the game.
Evans played horrible. But he wouldn't have played near as much if Teauge hadn't hurt his foot. We didn't have any choice but to play with Gordon and Evans... And honestly neither are very good corners right now. Evans doesn't have the speed to play corner in the SEC then you add to the fact we have to blitz everyone to get any kind of pressure on the QB and it leads to new records for the other team.
It is down right sad watching this every week. I know we are rebuilding. I know we are short on numbers. But this sucks guys. I love'em. I always will. But I have never seen anything near as bad as the product we are putting on the field right now. It is going to take time but I still am not sold on Dooley. The deal with not have enough kids on the field? I mean it happened again twice last night. Then the time we had like 4 or 5 penelties in a row. I mean that isn't good..... Come on. At least get lined up right and the correct amount of people on the field. I don't care if they are talented enough or not. Anyone can do that..... and after giving away a game because of it. I would expect it to be corrected by now. Also the recruiting is going to have to pick up. We are not where we need to be if we expect to get back to competing with the Bama's and Florida's of the world.... I know it takes time but if Dooley doesn't pan out. This could be ugly for a long time to come.
When you put that many freshman on the field there are going to be mistakes and that doesn't bother me as bad. And the time we had 10 on the field with Julio wide open what does it matter he was that wide open when Evans was supposedly "covering" him. Just saved him the embarrassment. The air might have put up a better battle. I love Dooley and think he is going to be a good one if the fans don't call for his head after 2 years.
Dooley will get his time. The program couldn't take another change. I am not saying anything like that. But when you look at Saban the reason he wins is he gets the best players. Look at the classes he has signed. I know he is a great defensive coach. But honestly there are alot of good coaches out there. What seperates them is recruiting. You have to recruit to win. Dooley could be a awesome recruiter.... Who knows... We will see.... We will not really know until you get a chance to see how the kids he recruits pan out. I think he is trying to sign kids that will stabilize the program and he is trying to add some size. We have to get back around 85 to even have a shot. But if these 3 stars don't pan out, if they don't have much success, we could be in for a long dry spell...
I like the guy. He gives a good press conference. But the reality is unknown and it will take three or four years before we will know.... That is what is scary about it. I mean if he doesn't pan out this could go on for a decade..... and it sucks....
Tennessee isn't a hotbed for HS talent. so out of state recruiting has to get better. Dooley has a shot at that with his roots going all the way out to the state of Texas. that could help a lot in the next few years.
IMO the instate vs. Out of state recruiting thing is overblown. I mean there are good players everywhere. The key is finding them. TN doesn't produce as many highly rated kids no doubt about that. But TN is different than most states when you compare instate talent. The really only large urban area with a large black population is Memphis. And honestly Memphis is a basketball town. It always has been. I mean Memphis is a 9 hour drive from Knoxville. But you could be in Atlanta in 3.5 hours. I think it is like Coach Dooley said. You have to recruit your base first and then work out. I think the base for TN is about a 5 hr drive from knoxville. The same can be said for most schools. We have to have success in those areas. If we don't we can't win in this conference. It is as simple as that.
I'm not sure who was calling the plays in the second half for Tennessee, but it was pathetic. Did they completely forget about Poole? Lets go out and get in the shotgun and throw 3 passes and kick the ball away. There offense was so predictible a 3 year old could tell you what was coming.
If they get under center...its a run up the gut cause God knows they won't throw from under center.
Shotgun, man in motion...end around.
They could have kept in this game when they drove down in the 3rd, took a time out...and decided, lets run 2 end arounds back to back, and a run up the gut on 3rd and 10.

UT does have a tougher situation than say, LSU, because of the lack of in-state talent. Memphis is a good area, but a lot of schools try and go hard at Memphis, not just the TN state schools either. Alabama likes Memphis, Ole Miss used to like Memphis a lot, etc... Its location is so far away from Knoxville, it makes it harder for UT to use the same in-state pitches in Memphis as it is in Knoxville or Maryville.
When UT was top of the heap, the roster was full of big out of state talent. Lots of California kids, Georgia kids, some Florida kids, Pennsylvania, etc...
Whereas a school like Alabama or LSU can be successful with mainly in-state kids. Alabama has a small amount of out-of-state starters, and I would wager LSU is 85% La. kids. Every school wants the huge recruits out of state, and the bigger schools get 1-2 every year, but you have to rely on a fertile recruiting bed to bring in the core talent.

Now Bama has to compete with Auburn for the in state talent, but with tons of talent to go around, both teams can field rosters full of in-state kids.
UT cannot do that.
In-state talent builds the core, out of state talent fills out the pieces.
Interesting stHere is another good article from John Adams of the Knoxville News. 10-22-2010. Bama has only 4 starting seniors in starting lineup compared to Vols who have 12.
Vols are Young. So are The Tide.
Tennessee players might be most concerned about Alabama?s defense and running game. But UT fans might find the Alabama depth chart more bothersome.
Check out the seniors in the starting lineup. All four of them.
The Tide entered the 2010 season as a defending national champion with 24 consecutive regular-season victories, a Heisman Trophy winner at running back, another running back just as good behind him, and the foundation already laid for a Nick Saban statue. That was enough to make it a consensus No. 1 pick in preseason.
That also was enough to obscure the fact that Alabama could be even better in 2011.
I?m not suggesting the Tide is out of the running for the 2010 national title. With unbeaten LSU and Auburn yet to come on its schedule, there?s still plenty of potential for a surge in the BCS rankings. My more distant view is aimed at the competition and the challenge of overcoming the powers that be in the SEC.
The Vols have lost four of six games and are on course for possibly the worst season in school history. But when you peruse a depth chart sprinkled with so many freshmen and sophomores, you can envision better days ahead.
Contrast that with the Tide, which is 6-1 and still in the running for the national title. Yet its depth chart has even more youthful appeal.
Nine of UT?s 24 starters, including the placekicker and punter, are freshmen or sophomores. Alabama?s starting lineup includes 11 freshmen or sophomores, and that increases to 12 if redshirt freshman offensive tackle D.J. Fluker is healthy enough to play.
The senior gap looks wider than the 17-point spread. UT will start 11 seniors against Alabama on Saturday night. The Tide will start four.
I realize a handful of Tide juniors could turn pro early. I also realize NFL personnel directors couldn?t tell you the name of a handful of UT juniors.
So Alabama could lose Heisman winner Mark Ingram and have to scrape by with Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy at running back next season. What a hardship, huh?
Aside from the Tide?s depth of talent at running back, its most apparent strengths are in the offensive line and front seven on defense. And it should be even stronger next season when it returns all but one starter and one backup from its first- and second-team offensive lines; the large majority of starters and backups on the defensive front seven return as well.
Another depth-chart discrepancy worth nothing: UT?s starters and backups on the front seven average 245 pounds; Alabama?s average 264 and hardly look weighted down in their pursuit of ballcarriers.
You overcome such disadvantages through recruiting. UT first-year head coach Derek Dooley salvaged a top-10 class for 2010, and his 2011 class has just cracked ESPN?s top 25.
Oh by the way, Alabama?s 2011 class is ranked second.
That?s what the Vols are up against in their comeback. It?s not enough that they do a lot of things right. They also have to hope that something goes wrong elsewhere.
For encouragement, perhaps they should look further east at another runaway rivalry.
A couple of months after preseason polls were touting Florida as a top-four regular nationally and practically giving it the SEC East by acclamation, the Gators are suddenly incapable of beating Mississippi State in The Swamp and have lost three consecutive conference games.
Imagine how different the Gators might look if quarterback Cameron Newton hadn?t transferred, or if former offensive coordinator Dan Mullen hadn?t taken the head coaching job at Mississippi State. But players transfer, coaches leave, things go wrong and the power structure changes.
Just the same, I?m penciling in Alabama as No. 1 for 2011.

I agree tho, the depth is awesome, esp. on defense. Alabama's defense will be absolutely nasty in a year or two

The stituation Dooley walked into compared to what Saban walked into are totally different. But I think recruiting to Alabama and recruiting to Tennessee are more similar than you think. Especially with Auburn instate for you guys.
They've got the 6th best player (Martin) in SC commited now and are in it for the 4th best player (Townsend) When re-rankings are done Worley should move up as well. It's crazy they have that kid ranked as low as they do. His #'s this year are crazy, 4366 passing yards and 42 TD's with 1 regular season game to go. He's also in the running for National Player of the Year and has 4 spots on the national passing records for career yards, passing tds, season completion %, and career pass completions. In Carolina they're still in it for the 2nd best player (Pagan) and I think they have a decent shot to get him. It's not a great year for either state as far as top end talent goes. SC has just six 4* rated players while NC has 9. Those two schools are more competitive now than they ever have been too which makes a pull even harder.Quote:

And Vol is right, the 05 class in Alabama was the best ever in the state. But Alabama always puts out good talent, but not the amout of elite talent that was in that class. Jerrell Harris, Julio, Dareus, Chapman, and one more I cant remember right off.
UGA's uptick the last few weeks I believe will really hurt UT. I believe those two schools compete for the most recruits one on one, and UGA's winning streak keeps growing, and if they beat Florida this week its gonna be big.
But that helps Alabama steal some of that Florida talent.
UT does well in the Carolina's, but they have serious competition. Alabama pulled Fulton, Lattimore stayed in state, UT got Miller, etc..
Who are the big ones UT is in on right now? Fundernburk just committed to Arkansas.
Alabama is in on Clowney, Cyrus K., Crowell from the big list, and Clinton-Dix and Brent Calloway have given verbals.

Curtis Grant is by far the best, and the best LB in the nation IMO. I think he is every bit as good as the super-hyped Jeff Luc last year, probably better.
