Why's that? The kids won't be able to choose which school they attend, their enrollment would still be decided by location. Seems like that'd be the best idea for names and would do away with any more of the horse**** that has came from this whole fiasco.Quote:

Well, regardless of what they are called, I think that a clean break from ANYTHING remotely regarding a mascot of the "former" LPD teams should not be used. Instead, give them mascots that are unique to our geographical location. And let the communities come together and start the healing. I would suggest names such as the Mountaineers and Hilltoppers. Remember, the schools will be on a mountain top. Or even reach back into our county's school history, not recent, but distant past, and give a former school a rebirth of sorts.

Really, it's apparent to me that the powers at be don't want the citizens of this county to identify with anything. I wouldn't even waste the money of building the kids a facility of their own to play athletic competitions in. They are joined at the hip on everything else so why build ball fields? It's a waste of money and time under this setup, they are already going to share students, bands, teachers, the cafeteria, and the auditorium.
call one Copperheads with school colors black and copper.
call the other Rattlers and have the school colors Purle and Black

I agree with completely going away from the old LPD Mascots and names, something completely new and off the wall.
wont be building any new fields. will be using existing fields if I remember correctly. I'd say probably Bullit Park will be one field used. I would say Wise field if they do something with the visitor side, then they have the baseball field as well. would like to say Norton's field but I don't know. I do know I will be a little peeved with the whole renovations of the stadium in Norton and all the money take up for the new sports complex at Norton just to be shut down.Quote:

Pikeville's Basketball and now Arena football teams already pay tribute to the miners.
I would call them the "Travelers" and the "Road Warriors" because there are going to be some mighty long road trips to play sporting events.
That's true, but it will give the kids more exposure and opportunities to play college athletics other than UVA-Wise.
The school of wise, pound, coeburn I came up with Birchfield Bears, since that road connects all three towns in the days before the 4 lane name it Birchfield High. As for appy, pv and if norton joins I thought Stone Mountain Trailblazers that it the mountain to your right going down the 4 lane to PV and behind appy
I don't know about the rest of you, But my grandfather made and ran moonshine for thirty years in Lee, Wise and Scott County. Heck they said Lee County ran off his shine. What about the moonshiners and revenuers they could play for a 58 Chevy or something. This whole Wise County deal has had more twists and turns than the Superman roller-coaster at Six Flags I hope it is over for everyone in Wise County. (always remember it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission)

I know most people are going to be for changing the colors but if you use JIB athletic facilities (just because they have both been re-done in the last two years and over a million dollars has been spent inside and out.) then the locker room, coaches office, meeting rooms, and weight room have all been decked out in black/orange so why not just keep those colors.
Both Pound/Wise have red in them so just keep Red in their colors and switch up the names.
Of course, who knows if Norton even joins, guess we will see
I know most of the people in Norton feel if we join use our facility for Football, there putting in Bermuda and new irrigation and drainage next spring, all that would have to be done is build a permament visitors side, the parking is better than most, the track could be turned into parking.

Well, first of all, Norton is not in yet, not sure they will be coming in. Perry's plan presented last night did not include Norton. I personally think Norton will have too many demands that Wise Co. officials may not feel like giving in to. We are not talking about just combining high schools, we are talking about dissolving the Norton City School System and the entire system joining Wise Co. That's going to mean Wise Co. taking on the debt of NCS and adding representation to the school board for Norton. This is a much bigger project than most people think to add Norton to the mix.
Secondly, it is yet to be decided as to what school populations will be grouped together.
This has been a blast to read, I have laughed until my sides hurt, Counts has it call one school Ralph Stanley and the other Ralph III. But in all seriousness this has been a fiasco for years, how many superintendents have Wise County been through and how much damage has been done to the county. Sullivan North was formed from bitter rivals and the school never has done anything in sports except for baseball, how many Appy players will play at PV, or Pound players at JJK.
