The Essential Update!
It's that time again as everyone who cares has been mostly lax over the past couple sets. We almost made some ground in finishing M11, but then those darned Scars previews hit. So, first I'm going to post the current decklist. Next, I'll summarize our conversation from M11. Then I'll add the saucy stuff from Scars.

We talked about Primeval Titan, Sun Titan, Leyline of Anticipation, and Time Reversal. It was suggested that Time Reversal come in for Magus of the Jar. Sun Titan could replace Elspeth. It was further suggested that forbid be removed (for leyline?) and that Liliana Vess be reconsidered and Sarkan Vol be considered.
Scars:
Sunblast Angel and Genesis Wave seem to be pretty sweet. Dissipation Field seems like a lot of fun. Skithiryx is pretty cool, but probably way too black for the Essentials. Those are the things that called out at me, but I did run through the spoiler quite quickly. I'm sure I missed some good stuff. What else do you like from Scars?
Also, what are the under-performers? Some stuffs gotta come out. What hasn't been working for you guys?

The only cards in Scars I think are in the conversation of a high rarityare the Mox, Sword, and Engine, and frankly I don;t think are good enough to make the cut.
I think Skinrender is great, but probably misses out, barely.
Now, Exsanguinate? That's money. I also adore Darksteel Sentinel. I think those are money cards.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
I was worried about pissing off the whole table with Exsanguinate, but I guess I was looking at it wrong. You wouldn't use it until you could at least kill off a player. You'd be in a great position coming out of it. Good stuff.
The Sentinel seems great, but he's six mana. That's a lot for a 3/3. The flash makes him really interesting though. Vigilance means he can always swing.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Having a hard time with the P.Titan spot. Oros? Teneb? C.Colossus?, Sol'Kanar, Silvos?
-
Re: The Essential Update!
OROS. He's never used. Ever.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
In addition to Sword of Vengeance, we might also want to look at Nim Deathmantle. Both are amazing equipment.
I'd rather have a Sword of Vengeance out than a Behemoth Sledge (except for when I'm low in life). It's very easy to compare them side by side. Both cost three to play and three to equip.
Sledge - +2/+2,. trample, lifelink - That's great! It's a great card.
Sword of Vengeance - +2/+0. trample, first strike, haste, vigilance
Compare - both give trample, and both give two in the front. The differences:
Lifelink and 2 defense
First strike, haste, and vigilance
Is the defense as important if I have first stirke? Getting in a extra hit with my creatures by equipping them with the sword each time I play another is great. Vigilance is a great ability in multiplayer, the creature stays around. How often do you fail to attack with the Sledge creature because you need to keep it back as a blocker?
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Having said that, I still think there is a place for the Sledge and perhaps the Deathmantle, in the deck.
The deck has teh following equipment:
Skullclamp - which is about drawing cards, not pumping the creature
Sword of Fire and Ice - played for the card advantage, although the abilities are nice
Umezawa's Jitte - played for the abilities
Sunforger - which is played because of the card advantage, although the pump is very nice
Behemoth Sledge
So we aren't running a lot of great equipment for the abilities (Lightning Greaves, Sword of Kaldra, Argentum Armor, and so forth) and we pulled Loxodon Warhammer too. We are literally saying that Sledge is the best equipment ever based on just the abilities it gives the creature. (I'm not sure I buy that)
Recommendations:
Leave in all of these cards above.
Pull Dead/Gone for Sword of Vengeance
(I really like it a lot, but I think it's a bit underpowered these days, especially since we aren;t seeing too many 60 card decks anymore, with their aggro-ness)
Pull Chrome Mox, Black Lotus, Lotus Bloom for Exsanguinate, Darksteel Sentinel, Primeval Titan
Pull Forbid for Leyline of Anticipation
Pull Magus of the Jar for Time Reversal
Pull Treefolk Harbinger for Genesis Wave
Pull Elspeth for either Liliana or Sarkhan Vol (do we need more Red after pulling out Dead Gone? If so, here's your Red back)
Pull Demonic Collusion for Sunblast Angel (how often are you really buying this back anyway?)
Pull Fabricate for Diabolic Tutor (Wouldn't you rather pay one more mana to tutor for anything?)
Pull Sakura-Tribe Elder for Cultivate (that may get some hate posts! STE is almost always a glorified Rampant Growth that can block once in a while before it goes. Cultivate is card advantage every single time you play it.)
Pull Doran for Sun Titan (What's Doran doing here? What does he make better? wall of Blossoms? Commander Eesha? Indomitable Ancients? Is that really enough to play?)
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Did Madrush Cyclops ever make it into your deck? What happened to it?
-
Re: The Essential Update!
In my opinion, the best Trinket Mage targets in the deck are:
Skullclamp
Expedition Map
Top
Mox of the right color
Sol Ring
-
Re: The Essential Update!
I would pull Dauntless Escort for Madrush Cyclops too. That gives me a Red so I'm not forced to go with Sarkhan Vol over Liliana Vess for Elspeth if I don;t want to. (assuming there are just 25 Red cards. I counted and that's what I came up with but I could have missed).
Then we need to decide which of those two Planeswalkers is the better choice. I'm initially leaning towards Liliana. But I can totally see sarkhan Vol.
Edit: After looking at both, I like Sarkhan Vol just a bit more, but Liliana is a better choice if you don't like that I pulled two tutors above.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
How many of each basic are you running?
-
Re: The Essential Update!
I think our mana needs some work. I'm thinking of several lands that we are not playing, but i looks like we should be
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Prior to our last sessions, I pulled:
Elspeth for Sun Titan
Forbid for Leyline
Magus for Time Reversal
Chameleon Colossus for Prim Titan
I'm find with trying out the changes you have mentioned. Seems like a lot of good shake ups for the deck. The things I'm most sad to go are the bitchin' rares I actually have foils of! The cards themselves, no big.
Should I return Chameleon Colossus to the deck? Other than being a big dude for mana investment, he doesn't bring much game.
Basics:
Forest - 10
Island - 8
Mountain - 5
Plains - 9
Swamp - 6
These will obviously change once some cards change. I've got excel running the proper ratios for the alloted slots.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Lands:
Exotic Orchard
Khalni Garden for a Forest
Rupture Spire
Halimar Depths for Island
all should be in. Replace prolly Plains and Swap with one each of the five color lands.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
I didn't realize until now that the land list hasn't been updated to reflect the most current version. I'll update that as soon as I get a chance and repost it. I know Exotic Orchard, Forbidden Orchard, and Petrified Field have been added.

I haven't discounted those changes. The list I uploaded was made before those recommendations. I have yet to generate the new list.

Re: The Essential Update!
Oh, and what about the bad Maze from M11?
Mystifying Maze. Is that runnable?
http://sales.starcitygames.com/cards...ifyingMaze.jpg
I'm not even sure why we never ran this, now that I think of it:
http://sales.starcitygames.com/cards...s_of_order.jpg
Why did we never run Prahv? Did we ever think about it? It also prevents damage from burn. And it can prevent it to a creature you control. It's very powerful. They tap for mana, so I see running them over Island of Wak-Wak.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Why is Sun Quan not in the deck? Did we ever discuss him? Post-proxy, I woul've thought we would've at least talked about him.
-
Re: The Essential Update!
Okay, lots to update. First, updated deck list. This doesn't reflect our land discussions. Otherwise, it's been updated to reflect the changes you suggested. I didn't feel any need to argue about them as they seem to be good changes.

Re: The Essential Update!
Okay, with that stuff worked out, on to the lands.
I have been trying to minimize CIPT lands since they can slow the deck down so much. I made an exception for Bojuka Bog because I thought the effect was well worth it. As for the rest of that cycle, Halimar Depths seems like it might be worth it, but I'm underwhelmed by the others.
CIPT lands:
Bojuka Bog
Shock Duals
Emeria
Krosan Verge
Lavaclaw Reaches
Llanowar Reborn
Tolaria West
Vesuva
The weakest on that list are Bojuka and Llanowar Reborn, but they're good. Should I slow down for a plant?
Rupture Spire seems great if I can drop it on the 2nd turn. After I fix my mana, won't it be a resource draw? CIPT and costs me a mana?
New Maze seems decent. More expensive than Kor Haven, but Maze effects are worthwhile. I like that Prahv prevents any source. That seems really good. I am wary of the mana investment to use either.
As for Sun Quan, we have not yet discussed him for the Essentials. He should probably get a spot. He wins games. There's lots of creatures he could replace. Oros? Chameleon Colossus?

New Maze seems decent. More expensive than Kor Haven, but Maze effects are worthwhile. I like that Prahv prevents any source. That seems really good. I am wary of the mana investment to use either.
As for Sun Quan, we have not yet discussed him for the Essentials. He should probably get a spot. He wins games. There's lots of creatures he could replace. Oros? Chameleon Colossus?
I agree that it's time for Oros to take a break, head to the sidelines, and drink some Gatorade.
Since you have a lot of cards that need three or four mana of a color, I think we can;t refuse Rupture Spire. Even with some duels, it helps. Tapping for every color is too important not to play, even with a little tempo loss.

Re: The Essential Update!
Treasure Mage only tutors for Bosh, DSC, and likely that there BSC.
BSC, yes please.
Sphinx, double yes please. Although he'll never last long. Like a 6 mana duress for removal :D
Rebirth seems nice. I like wraths that offer tricks since we aren't short of availability.
Mortivore still regenerates. Without that, he'd just be another big/big with no evasion. This is good too though. The equipping gives it that edge that regeneration gives mortivore. I'd rather have both than either/or.
Black Sun is interesting. That X gives a lot of leeway to play.

Re: The Essential Update!
BSC is obvious, so do we replace DSC with BSC? One more mana and a whole lot better...

Holy shit! That plate is amazing and damned cheap.
The Councel.... if you can cast that... :O :O words... there are none.

Re: The Essential Update!
what's the essentials plan post-California? Are we keeping the band together?
There are going to be some nifty Commander cards that will need to be added as well.

Re: The Essential Update!
Sorry, I had to find the board again.
I've still got it together. My new DM plays magic, so I may whip it out on occasion to show off. My magic plan will likely be to get a Type 4 deck together for the occasional go around. However, just because I don't get to play it often doesn't mean I want to let the Essentials fall by the wayside. I still adore the deck and would like to keep it up to date.

Re: The Essential Update!
That's a crapton of goods! The Essentials was never updated for Mirrodin Beseiged or New Phyrexia. I think we did hit Scars. With M12 and Commander as well, the deck may be in need of a huge overhaul. There are a lot of new cards that have been really really good.
On second look, I don't think we did Scars ever.

Re: The Essential Update!
M12 and Commander both have very solid drafts for the Essentials. And if I remember correctly, I think we dabbled with Scars and then never really followed through on that update.
