Well Phil Robbins had his final game coaching for PV today. This is definitely the end of an era. So much has happened at Powell Valley since 1983 because of him.
PV will miss him and I wish him good luck in all his endeavors post PV.

i heard the majority of people are glad he is gone. heard he was a class 1 jerk.
then you heard wrong.
what you heard was a big pile of bull****.
but its nothign like that, you are just a person trying to take shots at the greatest coach in SWVA history.
Sorry, Biggin. But he was worse than a class 1 jerk. There's no word to describe it. Although he can be described as one of if not the best coach in SWVA. Nobody can argue that. I think he tainted his legacy by staying so much longer. He didn't achieve anything else but some more wins and a state loss. His legacy would've been fabulous if he'd remained undefeated in state championship games. But he stayed too long and ruined that. But it is what it is and he is how he is and there's nothing that can change that. Thankfully, the Fat Phil era is done.
I guess you can almost nobody has a good legacy then since almost nobody goes out on top. Phil gets respect for the way he built a program, not for the wins or state titles, although you can't take anything away from them. Could Phil annoy the crack out of anybody? Absolutely. But who doesn't. And over a length of time, name a coach who hasn't?
It's not about going out on top. That's a very rare thing. But it's clear he stuck around for himself when somebody else could have had time to try to do something with those kids. And I think he stuck around trying to be the final PV football coach. Pure ego. His ego has always mattered more to him than anything and anybody else. Be that as it may I do agree he has earned the respect as a coach he deserves. And I agree that all coaches annoy us at some time or another. But for Fat Phil it was a constant thing and that makes it a lot worse. Like I said before, he is what and how he is and that will never change. He's had an amazing career and deserves all the accolades. I'm just glad it's done and over. And that's the opinion of just one person/former PV player so don't get too worked up about it. ;)
I like you, but you are totally wrong. Phil was going to leave a while ago, but he decided to stay because people WANTED him to stay. It had nothing to do with wanting to the last PV coach, or anything like that. Thats facts, there is no disputing that whatsoever.
And to act like someone else could do a better job at PV is really funny, because its totally absurd. So you are trying to tell us that a new coach, with no real experience or anything, would be a better option than a 7-time state champion winning coach? Thats insane.
I dunno what your problem is with him, but worse than a class 1 jerk? He might have been an arrogant guy, but what has Phil ever done that was so terrible? What has he ever done to be seen as anything more than a ****y guy who spouts off at the mouth? A terrible human commits crimes, assaults people, etc...
Tons of people dont like Phil, but most recognize that Phil is a great coach, and PV was extremely lucky to have him as long as they did.
There are plenty of people who dont like Phil (on teh forum as well), but you act like he was the worst human being on the planet, which could not be further from the truth.
Im sorry you have such resentment towards him, but you are wrong when you say Phil's ego kept him at PV.
I go to school with kids that a previous PV players and they say he is an ass and that no one likes him. straight from the horses mouth
Haha, you are such a moron.
Thats the biggest load of **** ever.
People's opinions about Phil vary, and he is def. a big personality, but to say no one likes him is the funniest thing I have ever read.
I disagree with SBG, but im not gonna insult him, because at least he is from PV and knew Phil somewhat.
but you dont know Phil, you dont know PV, frankly you dont know jack ****.
Only a person with no intelligence whatsoever would believe that talking to 2-3 PV players represents the whole town of BSG and PVHS.
I do know something. I do know Phil, I sit in his class at college, we talk, I didnt say I had a problem with him. But the 6 of 7 kids that played for him hate him with a passion and wish he would fall off the earth. Idk why you are being so defensive. maybe if you would something besides stare at a computer screen you might be a nice guy. But I hear looking at Tv's and screens like that cause people to be mean and irritable:coffeedrinker:
You call me defensive yet you say nobody likes him and he is a horse's ass.
Your last post called him a horse's ass yet you say you dont have a problem with him.
I would wager that the players you mention, IF tehy really said that (which I doubt), they most likely did not play, sat the bench but they were the better players but only didnt play because Phil didnt like them or whatever, right?
Thats usually the complaint from former PV players. they thought they were great, but they werent, and could not accept that they were not as good as the kid in front of them.
You've made it clear on here you dislike Phil, dont be a pus5y about it now.
oh, im a VERY nice guy, to a fault sometimes. But I will stand up for people I know and respect when people get on here and spout **** thats incredibly moronic and false.
More likely since he's in school with them now, it's one of the primadona's that made up a good 80% of those who've been on one of the abominations that have been the past 3-5 PV teams that have no heart, give little effort, and have even less talent. When you own those glowing qualities in bold, you've got to have someone else to blame because you're sure not going to own up to it.
The team this year is low on talent, but their effort has far surpassed some of the last few years teams.
If I am wrong I stand corrected. And I never said anybody could exactly do better. But based on the last several years somebody might could have had a better season or two in there than he did. The problem with a legend is nobody can do better because supporters include their entire career. Nobody else can match that vs Fat Phil. But based on the last 5 seasons or so maybe. And I did say maybe. And if he has been a saint to you every time you see him then great. My opinion doesn't stem from my time on the team only. But he has been an absolute ass, for lack of a better (or worse as it may be...LoL) term, to me and several members of my family for years. Now lots of people won't believe that and think I'm FOS but that's you're right. I'm not going to lie about it. Believe that if you will. But you will notice that unlike others I don't try to convince other people to feel the same way. I feel the way I do and you the way you do. That's the way it should be. And my issue with PR is off the field. There's no arguing against what he has done on it. The records prove that. And I think it's great to have been a minute part of that and watch it unfold in my lifetime. But thanks for being open minded and respecting my opinion. :2thumbsup:
I really think Phil done about as good of a job as whole as anyone could with what was in uniform at PV the last couple of years.
Definatly an end of an Era of Greatness. I don't care who coached at PV the last 10 years, the Talent Level in the Gap is just down...like much the rest of the area. Best of Luck Phil!
Robbins is gone. Everybody take a deep breath and calm down. If you like him fine if you don't fine let the man retire in peace. This reminds me of the media when someone dies or leaves, 85 people you never heard of start being critical. The man jerk or not, has a record no one will match around here ever. If this is the bull he put up with at PV the last 5 years I would have quit then and left the Stoners too themselves.
My comments on Phil are based on an opinion, and to be honest, he can and has been a horse's hindquarters at times. Did he believe his own hype at times? Absolutely. Did he make bad decisions at times? Absolutely once again. If anybody thinks though that Powell Valley had something great the last few years, they are kind of out there. Phil's biggest problem the last however many years ago it is/was now was thinking he had the next generation of Jones, and falling in love with that idea. If anything he probably lost touch with the generation and the kids by losing assistants, not so much of a change in him or anything. If you want to say he probably was stubborn to a fault, I'll agree with on that but sometimes that stubborn benefits, especially when the talent matches :)
I can definitely appreciate where someone would not have liked Phil, particularly if they were in his doghouse because he's about too stubborn to admit he was wrong or made a mistake. You can talk about the man wanting to be the last PV coach or whatever but I kind of think thats silly, Phil wanted to win, and at the end of the day, the man is/has been breaking down but was still there. It's always easy to down someone, dang easy, but appreciate what someone gave and did. Nobody is saying talk about how saintly he was, or anything along those lines, but realize what he did give to the program and the area. Now did he like the praise and attention? Heck yeah, anybody who thinks Phil didn't have plenty of ego and liked praise is silly but you know what, he's earned the right to have a lot of ego too.
I don't care if it was Bear Bryant. Sure there was an unbelievable run of talent at PV. It wakes a great coach to turn that talent into championships.
Which other coach around here has missed the playoffs only twice in a 28 year period of time?
He's a jerk. He's arrogant. But he has the right to be arrogant with stats like that.
Yeah well Mack Shupe could be an arrogant arse as well, but no one cares when the state titles are being hoisted. I'll not be sending Phil Robbins Hallmark cards at Christmas, but I sure as heck respect what the man did for that program/on the field.
I would bet dimes to donuts you are exactly right. The last few years have been hard on PV fans, but there is some talent. Its not like 1998, but they had talent that flat out refused to try and get better. Even some of the better players were not working hard or out there doing all they could to improve the team. If the work ethic and heart shown by some of the past teams (98, 01, 04, even this year) was there in the last couple seasons, PV is much better than 5-5.
and some of those kids believe that because the team was not as successful as PV has been or Phil didnt coddle them or play them that Phil was somehow the cause, when Phil was one of the few reasons the teams were somewhat successful, not the other way around.
but I dont want people ot think im attacking Myron, because that could not be further from the truth. A lot of people were really hard on him, and yes he made some (big) mistakes, but he was a hard worker and he really did care about the team. Im not gonna name kid's name who I think did not try and didnt care enough, but some lump Myron P. in that group when its simply not true.
and SBG, im not doubting it one bit that Phil may have been arrogant or what have you towards you, but he is not a bad person. I understand you have your reasons, but when it comes down to it, Phil is a lot of things, ****y, etc... but he is not a bad person.
somebody said it best, he may have been arrogant, but its not like he was arrogant for no reason. Im not saying arrogance is a great quality to have, but false arrogance is way worse than just regular arrogance lol
I agree for the most part..IMO he might have helped his cause by pulling some of those unis as well tho. As for Phil, as a player I didn't always agree with some of his decisions and I didn't always like his personality..and as a fan those things didn't change..but you can **** well bet I always RESPECTED him. Sure he was blessed with talented players for 2 decades, But he developed that talent by stressing fundamentals AND managed that talent to 7 State Titles. It wasn't always so much his X's and O's as much as it was his ability to motivate his players. So, people can say what they want, but the numbers and accolades speak for themselves. Phil Robbins has done more than enough to earn his place and respect as one of the greatest coaches SWVA has or ever will see.
One thing I always understood about Phil, was that he was gonna give anyone his best shot at getting the W. He never just went through the motions I don't believe.
I agree with Stripes 100%.
I dont care if it was the worst Pound team and Pv was gonna win by 60 or the best GC team and PV was gonna lose by 30, Phil is gonna give it his best shot at winning the game.
He never took plays off, he is the anti-Randy Moss lol
blah blah blah blah!!!!:mooning::laffingassoff::laffingassoff::la ffingassoff::laffingassoff:
Go practice basketball Powell Valley, leave the winning to Clintwood in the LPD:snickerpup:
Doesn't PV have the most LPD championships? For 20 plus years, until recently, Clintwood would give the best LPD fits but really had no shot at winning state.
Phil Robbins still has more football state trophies on one hand than Gate City has in their entire history.
1982, PV won the LPD
1983, PV
1985, PV
1986, PV
1988, PV
1989, PV
1990, PV
1994, PV
1995, PV
1996, PV/Appy
1997, PV
1998, PV
1999, PV/Clintwood
2000, PV
2001, PV
2004, PV
2009, Clintwood PV
That's 17 LPD championships and co-championships there, Mozart. Gate City only won 2 outright LPD championships when they rejoined us. One co-championship in 05 and they weren't even the best team that season.
What does Clintwood have to do with it anyway?
This is Phil Robbins' thread. If you want to condescend PV, do it in another thread and get pwned while you're at it.
let him go DJ, its obvious he wishes he got to play under the greatest coach in SWVA history.
Gotta be a 12 year old trying to be a tough guy.
HOWS BASKETBALL PRACTICE GOING FOR YOU GUYS? HEARD YOU GUYS THINKS IT IS YOU YEAR TO WIN IT. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA:laffingassoff::2t humbsup::laffingassoff::2thumbsup:
yeah, take shots at the one PV team that has had success against you.
the last meeting between PV and GC last year, a game at Gate City, I seem to forget, who won that game? Can you help me remember?
I know GC beat PV at PV, but for some reason I cannot remember what happened in the most recent contest between PV and GC in basketball.
then how can you be a PV fan when you dont know what happens in other games besides football? faker? those stands aint to far to walk up Bigg"en:laffingassoff:
i know what happened douchebag, i was making sure you remember who beat GC at their house
cant recall that one? Honaker? ya it was honaker, we got put out of the region d by them.
yeah, GC was sitting at home while PV was still playing, good call.
been the opposite in football lately aye?
Jeez-a-loo!! This thread spiraled out of control. Any mod available should close it.
It is one thing to defend someone but to say that only bad players or players who never played say these types of things is wrong. I know a lot of former starters and good football players that feel he was not good for Powell Valley. Have you ever talked to Thomas or any of his family on what they think about him?;)
I remain on the fence about this and you and anyone else has the right to defend him, but no one should insult or get defensive because someone elses opinion differs from theirs.:)
As I was reading I didnt feel like anyone was questioning his coaching ability.
