OT Your Favorite or Most Respected Musical Artist

I just thought it'd be interesting to see the different tastes among the members here, as well as an opportunity to maybe discover someone new music.

It seems that for the better part of the last decade or so i often find myself listening to the gear more than the music.

But, there's one fella who's work brings me back to the music every time, JJ Cale. I suppose part of my attraction is having grown rather fond of the "Tulsa" sound. More than that though is this mans ability to make music regardless of the tools available to him. A true musician packaged as a "regular guy". He in a way reminds of a few of our members here.

Dang. How to pick? My taste changes with my mood, which could be often, at least according to the redhead.

A quick inventory comes up with mostly guitar slingers...from Chuck Berry,Bo Diddley, up thru Dick Dale, Ventures, etc...obviously Eric Clapton...and not at all least Dave Edmunds...

Either that or sonqwriters like John Prine and Tom Paxton....

I can't do a favorite. But at least I hope gave some indication of my tastes...

There aren't too many good Vids of Frank Zappa,but his son Dweezil put together this band and plays his fathers music seen them 6 times they are fantastic this one is Good.

I guess my favourite band would be "Fourplay". Bob James, Lee Ritenour & Larry Carlton, Harvey Mason, Nathan East.

As far as individual performers go:
Billy Cobham, especially his early stuff, Dave Weckl, Stanley Clarke, Chris Botti.....

or really anything with a nice feel & groove....really makes those Altecs sing.

JJ's one of my faves too Bowtie. Got to see him warm up for The Kinks in '77 right after Troubadour came out... awesome show. No distractions from the music, he sat mostly still in a straight-back chair with his guitar in his lap most of the show. Any way the wind blows is a regular here.

John Prine's on my list too O.G. Real close to the top. Caught him & Iris DeMent in a cozy college hall not that many moons ago. On my 4th copy of Souveniers now, I can't seem to hang on to that one.

Bob James & Stanley Clarke? You bet! Brings back my KC jazz hitch. Saw 'em both.

A couple more that get regular airtime in the fish hut; Ry Cooder and Albert King.

My love for vocals are one of my main attractions to horn loudspeakers. Among other reasons. My latest attractions come from Japan:

my Vots have been retired to my vinyl listening room,,

main vocal artist are Joan Baez and Roy Orbison,,

for classical guitar Pepe Romero, John Williams and flamenco Paco De Lucia,,

Some real greats mentioned in this thread. Not surprisingly, just like personal preferences/tastes are all over the map as far as speakers/design, the same follows for favorite/most respected artists. I have to think that Altec fans have "good" ears in general (not just for great speakers but for music as well), based on some of the greats (IMHO) mentioned in this thread like JJ Cale, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Clapton, Dave Edmunds, Floyd, Zappa, Petty, of course Les Paul (the genius who "invented" the electric guitar). I've got several of those artists in my collection, and have a lot of respect for all of them plus more artists that some of you mentioned--the list is getting pretty big in this thread. You guys posted some great videos and I couldn't resist chiming in.

I listen to a lot of contemporary artists and have many that I really enjoy, but if we're going for all time favorites in this thread then a couple for me that haven't been mentioned yet would be the Who and there was also this 60's band called the Beatles. I spent some time tonight searching youtube and here's a couple of classic songs/vids that stood out for me by each of these two groups--Be sure to watch in FULL SCREEN MODE.....

will be re-broadcast dec 5th, you don't want to miss it. "Walking in the Sand" is unforgettable.............. she is spot on.

So many that it IS hard to pick.

One Christmas I heard a recording of George Shearing playing "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman" & "Take Five" at the same time! And he made it sound both good and easy. I have great respect for Mr. Shearing, now.

Also a big fan of Pierre Boulez as a conductor. He has a profound understanding of 20th Century music and conducts it so well.

Do you have a time on that Dec.5 broadcast ? 8pm maybe ? I like Jeff Beck,my favorite of his "Freeway Jam" a local band around here used to play it and alot of other Beck tunes.So kinda grew up with it. The Ernie White Band !

I've tainted my cookies with my local info so i cannot post the link i want to.

If you go to the PBS website, click schedules and a box will come up for you to plug in your zip code, then you pick your TV station and a full schedule will appear, there's also a search function so you can just get the listings for Jeff Beck if you prefer.

Scheduling will vary by region and your local PBS carrier. I just discovered it will be rebroadcast in my area tomorrow at 4:30 pm.

The big 5 in my area are Verizon Fios,Comcast,Cablevision,Direct TV,Dish Network and they are all trying to cut each others throats and pull customers from one another.So we get pretty decent service.And cheaper if you stick with the basic service.We can get internet,tv,phone for $100 month,I'm pretty sure that Comcast and Verizon are still offering that pkg.:)

Interestingly, I've got the '66 album Movin Man by Howard Roberts...nice version of
Relaxin at Camarillo!

But the two greatest songs to listen on your Altecs to a jazz guitar player is simple.
Get Goin out of My Head by Wes Montgomery and listen to Naptown Blues and Twisted Blues...they are simply the best big band plus guitar playing arrangement I have ever heard...get it! The Altecs will make you cry!!!! The remastered CD and quality of the recording is astonishing...

Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Dan Treanor.

try 'iron hand' by dire straits..nice and loud, see if it makes the house shake. there are some good bass notes in there. live aman amarth 'where silent gods stand guard' . holst 'the planets' is good . thousands of selections to choose from, who can coose a favorite. jerry reed is great tho

My Favorite and Most Respected Musical Artist at Christmas time would have to involve
Christmas music. If you want to give your system a testing workout with precision voices and powerful
pipe organ, this is the one for uninterrupted critical listening. See if your Altecs can cleanly handle this.
Its traditional Anglican style music without the stuffiness but it still might not appeal to most here.
The reviews tell it all.

What Child Is This CD

My opinion of this would be the same no mater where I live but this just happens to be our
local Pro group in which we are involved. Paul Halley told me himself that this Cd is everything
he hoped for.

Nice! Joe Walsh's "Barnstorm", "So What", "The Smoker You Drink..., "But Seriously Folks" are some of my favorites by Joe. He had some great stuff with the James Gang as well.....

Was just listening to Pavement "Brighten the Corners" (not their best album but kind of a "different one" for them) produced by Mitch Easter--anyone ever heard of Mitch Easter or his band "Let's Active"? Saw Pavement/Stephen Malkmus on Colbert a couple of months ago--nice interview and performance on that show--it's great that this band got back together. I always got a kick out of this "low budget" video Stephen Malkmus (Pavement's lead singer) did a while back--different from Pavement but still cool.....
