Terrific defense, Great job Devils. Congrats to Coach Houseright.
Great Job Guys!!:D
Gate City ran the ball right down Gretna's throats all night, and I loved every second of it. Got some good footage of both the East Mont--Riverheads game as well as the Gate City--Gretna game that I will upload in the near future. Riverheads surprised me with just how talented and tough their running backs were. They didn't have a whole lot of size, but good God those guys were tough runners! They were pretty quick, too. They were definitely a far superior team to East Mont and I'm not sure even Clintwood could have defeated them. I have to say that East Mont's QB was probably the single most impressive player I saw throughout the day, though. One problem I noticed consistently is that his line did not block very well for him. Although both teams put up a great amount of points, the Riverheads defense was often in his face as soon as he received the snap, whereas when Riverheads had the ball, they moved it at will and blocked excellently for their 'backs. I'm actually surprised he put up the stats he did, but he's an absolute stud and one of the best QB's I've seen in a long time at this level. I was far more impressed with him than I was Nick Miller from Gretna.
All in all, just an excellent day for football. Both games were very exciting and even close at spots. I'm just glad Gate City came away with a win. I was fearing we'd see a repeat of 2007 with a far superior Gretna team taking them to the woodshed, but I was presently surprised by the determination and tenacity shown by the Devils. Great job, GC!

I agree that EM's line didn't block that well, but riverheads was blitzing both a gaps with the inside backers. Center had to pick one and the other ran free. I would think the rb should have blocked the other in a check release fashion but he usually just released.
Chubz: didn't you think Riverheads was bigger than Clintwood? Maybe I was wrong but I thought they were.
I don't know about the size, but man they ran the ball well. When these people were talking about how they had racked up so many yards rushing this year, they weren't messing around. If you want to see some true power-running, look no further than these guys! I'll have to look at the listed heights/weights in the program to see how they compare to Clintwood overall. I could be wrong when I said they didn't seem to have too much size - maybe I just saw it the wrong way.
congratulations GC Players, Coaches and Fans!!!!
If EM hadn't fumbled, which was the only turnover of the game I think, I am not sure if they wouldn't have pulled within one score. Then there was the kickoff that was recovered by EM that the refs gave to riverheads. I am not sure if they were thinking they had posession or if it was an inadvertant whistle, but EM came up with the ball. A couple of plays and it could have gone either way.
Congrats to Gate City!
It's so good to finally see a state championship come back Region D.
