Mark May.....My Hero?
I never thought I would type that.
When discussing the NCAA's decision to suspend 5 Ohio State players for the first five games NEXT year, he started railing on the hypocrisy of the NCAA's suspensions.
If Pryor played in the SEC, NO way he plays in the Sugar Bowl. If DeVar Posey was at Boise State, absolutely no way they allow him to play.
AJ Green didnt get to pick and choose his suspension, Dez Bryant was out half a season for lying to investigators, but the Big 10 is the NCAA's golden child. No way they would even fathom having those kids miss the Sugar Bowl.
Let me ask yall this; if Ryan Mallet did this, would he get to play in the Sugar Bowl?
Apparently, the tOSU kids gave away signed memorabilia for tattoos.

Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Well, I think they should be suspended for the bowl game. However, Cam Newton does play in the SEC...
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
ahh i knew that was coming, but since its never been proven yet that Cam took anything at Auburn, he is completely eligible regardless of at what happened at MSU.
but to be honest, if Penn State did it I bet they would have suspended their players for the bowl anyway.
but as we all know, tOSU is the NCAAs golden goose.
Mo Clarett? No way Alabama has a player say that kinda stuff, have receipts, and not get busted hardcore.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
the ACC is in the same boat;
if this happened at VT or FSU, I guarantee those kids are out for the bowl game.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
I know nothing has came out about Cam. Just thought I'd throw that in there.:)
There is no doubt in my mind that O$U is a dirty program and I'm sure if the NCAA dug a little deeper they would find a lot of violations. But we both know that isn't going to happen.
And you're right if something like that happened at PSU they would have been suspended and so far in Coach Paterno's doghouse they probably would never see the light of day again.

Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
I agree, tOSU is ran like an SEC program but gets an inordinate amount of love from the NCAA. The cheating scandal, Andy Katzenmoyer, Mo Clarett, and now this.
but the NCAA pays really close attention to the down South schools, especially those with, um.,, torrid pasts haha.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
I forgot to add, thats one thing that PSU fans and SEC fans alike can enjoy; sh1tting on tOSU. Penn State has had GREAT success against the SEC historically whereas tOSU has none.
LBU, do you root for tOSU in bowl games? Will you be rooting for them over Arkansas?
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
I guess in theroy I should want O$U to do well in bowl games because it would make the Big 10 look better. But I just can't do it. There will be a BIG smile on my face if Arkansas wins.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Most Big 10 fans that I've talked to, well every fans but tOSU fans root against tOSU. Most ACC fans root against Miami and FSU, and all Big XII fans root against Texas and OU.
the SEC is different, but I'm not real sure why. Most SEC fans root for SEC fans in the bowl games, including rival teams. Florida fans root for UT, LSU fans root for Ole Miss, and even some Bama fans are rooting for Auburn. I am.
the only teams that seem to refuse to root for each other is Ole Miss and Miss. State. **** those two teams hate each other.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
If it were any other college than OSU, they would have been suspended for the bowl game.
I honestly don't think they got suspended because of the NCAA's ruling on Newton earlier. They just don't want to deal with it. So, they settle for 5 games next year.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
It will probably be a 2 game suspsension by the start of next season.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
I forgot to add that it wasn't just the tattoo trading. Some, maybe all of them, sold Big Ten championship rings and other awards that they had won too.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Call me crazy, but what is wrong with what they did? They sold items that belonged to them. Does selling personal items violate NCAA regulations?
I'm not getting into the whole conference debate. Just curious as to what the problem is here. If they sold clothes at a yard sale, would that also violate NCAA rules?
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
AJ Green lost four games for the same reason. You cannot sell memorablia like that while still in school, it counts as receiving improper benefits.
and yes, if they sold game memorabilia or championship rings in any form, its a violation of NCAA rules

Yep. And before anyone asks why it's against the rules to do so, it's because a booster/agent/anyone can give them $200,000 and say it was for a game worn jersey/pants/shorts/mouthpiece that could be worth .01.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
yep, its a way to try and keep players from making extra money.
its like the no show jobs. as lung as, an agent could easily take advantage of that if the rule was not there and pay an exorbitant amount for a worthless item
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
The big time kids should go out and get real jobs during the summer to make the big money.
Is there a max limit they can make with one job?
I know the summer before Tom Zbikowski senior season at Notre Dame, he made $23,000 in like 36 seconds I believe. But he was a Gold Gloves Boxer and professional.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
that kind of aggravated me, they let Tom Z. box but told Jeremy Bloom he could not play football because he had received money from his skiing. but Zbikowski was allowed to box AND receive his cut of the purse.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
He still got drafted into the pros.
I think his was more because of the Olympics and all that.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
i know, but the NCAA allowed Tom Z. to make and keep money from a non-football sport and he received sponsorship money IIRC, which was why the NCAA said Bloom was ineligible
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Zibby didn't get any endorsements for the fight, and didn't actually need any.
Bloom needed the endorsements for the Olympics.
The NCAA allows you to be a professional athlete, other than the sport you play in, just no endorsements. Zibby didn't take any. Just the money he won.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Bob Arum promoted the fight and Zb. got paid.
"According to NCAA Bylaw 12.1.1, a Division I football student-athlete may box professionally and retain his eligibility, as long as he does not promote a commercial entity. "
He fought on the undercard of a big time PPV fight, I guess the rules are pretty open ended. By being on the card, he promoted the card just with his name, and I figured that would constitute promoting a commerical entity.
but you're right, i thought he took money from a sponsor and he didnt. thats why Bloom couldnt play as you noted, he took sponsor money.
but I dunno, its a weird situation
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Yep, and I've read many reports on it, even from CBS Sports, NBC, etc... and each reported that Bloom was a jerk the entire process and Zib was doing everything they said.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
yeah the NCAA always rewards cooperation, like in the AJ Green/Marcel Dareus situations.
I can understand Bloom's point tho, its two totally different sports. And he said that skiier had to have sponsor money to compete, not sure how true it is but thats what he said
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
yep, but then again, John Elway played Minor League baseball during college football off-season and got paid for it.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
yep, he refused to play for the BAL Colts so he played baseball for a year and got drafted by DEN the next year.
thats the main reason I dislike Elway. You play for whoever drafts you
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Im a huge Elway fan, and that is something that used to bother me, but I don't have a problem with it anymore. The way I see it now, if you have the ability to sit out a year to put yourself in a better position to succeed, then more power to you. You are sacrificing a big payday today, for the potential of better money down the road.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
but its a big slap in the face to the team that drafted you. its showing an insane amount of arrogance to believe that a player is better than any team. i hated it when eli did it and its the reason im not a huge Elway supporter.
the purpose of the draft is to give the worst teams the best players in an attempt to give them a better shot at winning, and Elway thought he was greater than the system IMO
he isnt the only one, eli did the same and it was ridiculous
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Elway could have been successful with them.
Didn't Eli Manning do that? Wasn't he going to be drafted by the Chargers and refused to play if they did?
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
yep, thats exactly what he did. he refused to go to SD and basically held them hostage til they traded him to NYG.
SD got the better end of the deal IMO, Rivers is the better all-around QB. (SD traded Eli for the rights to draft Rivers if I remember correctly)
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
Most definitely, I would take Rivers over Eli. He may not have the ring yet, but he's a GREAT QB and I love his attitude... he runs his mouth and is ****y.
-
Re: Mark May.....My Hero?
im a rivers fan as well, so is UTV. i like his fiery demeanor and his drive to win.
yeah, eli has the super bowl ring, but id still take Rivers any day of the week.
Eli leads the NFL in picks this year while Rivers is closing in on a 5,000 yard season. All that with a skill corp decimated by injuries. Gates has missed like 5 games, Jackson missed most of the season, Floyd has missed games, Crayton has missed games, Nanee has been hurt at times and the RB Matthews has been injured on and off.
