Thanks for the info, but im not sold on the hire.
Turner has never proven to be a head coach and his offense at PV this year was terrible. I hope it turns out well, but we cant give him 10 years of terrible-ness to learn how to coach.
If this is true then its and obvious politically motivated hire. His uncle may not have been part of the interview process but you can sure bet those who were all deserve a favor from a board member now.

Most said the same about him when he was coaching softball at Appy. They were wrong. Again, the same was said about him when he was named softball coach at P.V. They also were wrong. I didn't like his offense this year, hope that changes. Other than that, I think it is a good fit.
So now matter who was hired, there would be folks protesting.
Yes, it looks that way. the new coach needs to be given a chance to run the program. Everyone needs to put their emotions aside and support him. I would be saying the same thing no matter who got it.Quote:

On another note, a lot of people from Appy are critical of him because they feel "betrayed" in that he even thought about going to P.V. to coach or even teach. I think he has shown that even one of Appy's "homegrown" can let things go when they become adults. Kudos for him!!:):)

Terrible hire. PV should hire a coach with a resume and experience worthy of the job. This was just a political move to help ease the hostility of consolidation. His last name got him this job
If you really think that it was his offense this year, or that he was even calling plays you are very naive. Did you not watch him on the sidelines. He had no part in the play calling at all he just stood be side Phil and listened like a good assistant should. Phil called the plays, did the game planning and made all the decisions. Did you not notice Phil talked to the kids during the timeouts for the offense and Travis did nothing. You all need to really pay more attention and quit believing the crap you read in newspapers or hear on radios. Make no mistake that was Phil Robbins team and Phil Robbins offense this year.

Anybody that's ever played or coached at the High School level knows that assistant coaches help install the game plan and make SUGGESTIONS on game night..but the Head Coach makes the calls. Some DCs get to call their own game on Defense, but that's not always the case either.

The school board votes to hire a new coach and yes Uncle Phillip voted to hire Travis as the new coach. Coach Morris has been with Coach Robbins longer than Travis has. When it comes to play calling Travis is not very good. I know this first hand and I'm not trying to start anything. The movie Varisty Blues is nothing compared to Appalachia Blues that might come out when the schools are closed.
The only problem he has play calling IMO is that he likes to run a wide open offense and he hasnt had the players to do it yet
I think he will do a fine job. He hasnt even started yet!

I'm not disappointed in the choice. In fact I'm hopeful that this could turn out very good for PV, BUT a little history lesson might be in order. When Mark Palmer played at Ervinton they were an LPD school. His senior season they were very competitive with nearly everybody on their schedule as I remember. In one of his best games he led them to an upset of Appalachia. (Going by memory so I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure I'm right.)Quote:

In the early 80s..I'm thinking 1983, Ervinton handed PV a district loss as well.
It wasn't '83 because that was Phil's first year and they went 10-0 regular season after being picked 5th in the pre-season. Might have been '81. I should have the scores here somewhere if I can dig them up.
Palmer was a very good running back in his day.
It was '81. I found the scores. Ervinton beat PV 21-7 that year. Palmer would have been on that team too. They also had a starting quarterback who played noseguard on defense and was pretty good at both positions. I think his name was Robinson. Tony Robinson maybe.
That may be true I dont know the guy or have anything against him. Just thinking the average high school player at PV is going to know who Travis Turner is and remember him playing and how good he was as a player, just that they wouldnt be as familiar with Palmer
True on that, but on the flipside of that coin, Palmer has always been a "household" name in that area and in his day, was just as good as Travis was when he played. Palmer was something else to watch play. I remember him well.Quote:

It wasn't that Mark was unhappy at St. Paul. He just felt like he couldn't pass up an opportunity to coach at a school rich in tradition like PV. Too close to not give it a shot.
