Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
The Coalfield says Rivers mentioned having a "tool" to fight consolidation last month. Turns out, it's a new ordinance that would require county buildings that increase their regular occupancy 10% or more be upgraded to meet current fire & building codes, but the Supers wouldn't have to pay for it. However, the schools AREN'T county buildings, but school system buildings.
Don't quite see how that helps them any. Just looks like a "tool" for more ridicule to me
School building proposal on tap Thursday
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
It actually doesn't apply since the school buildings still fall under the code when they were built in the 1950's, unless major renovations are done to the building. Really not a "tool" that can be used to stop consolodation, he was thinking about when He and his wife Betty Cornett have to bring things up to code when they work on their rental properties and use it.
Example is when the new energy efficient windows and AC was put in each classoom at John I. Burton back in the 90's they had to redo the electrical for the whole school to current building code.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
It doesn't matter when they were built... he wants to change it so it also applies to a 10% pop. increase.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
If you can't see the forest for the trees...
he wants a county mandate that a county bldg. be upgraded without the county paying for it.
So, who does?
Here's the kicker...
(I don't know actually examples, but think along these lines...)
When a small place with a few employees, like the library or extension office or sheriff's dept., hires 1 or 2 new ppl, they'll cross the 10% line, and BOOM .... automatic new expenses.

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Tonight was fun! I didn't hear this mentioned, but Rivers did lay out a proposal that is identical to the SB of keeping all six open...BUT JJK does not get a new school. And I got to finally experience the mob tonight after the meeting, only took me three speeches, loved every bit of it.:)

Sounds like fun....was Bama Man there to tell you that they all really like you and were just tring to get under your skin? LOL
Did anyone blast them for circle jerking around and losing a 15 Mill interest free?
Just wondering because I do not rember it being talked about .......IF the closing 3 small schools is blocked by hook or crook does anyone have any idea what kind of cuts the schools will need to make in order to continue treading water?

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Haha I'll say Bama man was not in attendance, I know he's said somethings on here, but he's not in that bunch(well at least participating during the meeting) that the rudest people you'll ever meet in your life.
And it was mentioned, cannot remember his name, but the guy from the pro-consolidation side(the younger one out of the two regulars) mentioned it. It was talked about by another guy on the other side, who said you could use it for anything and not just consolidation - Rivers picked that up later on, but even admitted you'd lose quite a bit of it. It really didn't get good until most had left around 930 or so, then Rivers did his proposal. He tried his best to drag it on as long as possible, then Dana adjourned, the **** hit the fan after that. Everyone starts yelling and moaning, then who else but betty gets up and starts yelling at the board "that's pitiful" "you're a disgrace" etc...of course I couldn't keep my big mouth shut since the meeting was over and started right back with "This is one to talk back here" and such, boy did I get it in the hallway lol. Half of them surrounded me and *****ed, betty called me little boy and told me about her sons getting degrees and being successful, I said that was great and good for them, but that could happen more with consolidation.
A part that was mentioned that I think more needed to hear, they asked the financial adviser if we keep all six open, of course he said no and said we couldn't without a 10-20 cent at the lowest, well everyone had to jump in and say "I'll pay it", but it was pointed out that that is only a FIX for the time being...in several years that's going to go up and up with these buildings getting older, enrollment still declining and inflation to cover. Yeah you might be able to do it for a couple of years with an increase, but it just makes a bigger mess and the schools would have to be renovated AGAIN.

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
What I was most interested in tonight was the redistricting debacle. From what I can gather, there are 3 plans on the table up for a vote. Two of those 3 plans, if I am not mistaken, would "district" Kilgore out of a seat and that has gotten under her skin. She does not support those two of cours, but she does support the 3rd one that is actually the one we have now.
And what do you all think about the abrupt adjournment last night right in the middle of Robbins' comments? At least two supervisors left last night pretty ****ed off and some of that was caught on tape. When you finally get under Robbins' skin, look out, and I do think that got under his skin.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
There are three plans, but only Rivers/Robbins plan puts her out of the district. Shortt's creates three districts, 2 officials per district with 1 who runs at large for the whole county giving an odd number of 7...or possibly 3 per district giving 9, that was discussed two, but the former was really what he was going for. The other plan leaves it all the same it is now. And Rivers/Robbins plan keeps 8, see he presented his new map and an older one he had presented back in january - that's not two plans, they're just going to use those two maps and tweak them into one, but yes both did put her out of her district.
Rivers was just pulling a stunt, so let him get ****ed, I only wish it had been adjourned long before that. It wasn't like she waited and caught him in mid sentence and just closed it, it was being talked about and most had agreed to wrap it up except Rivers and she just did it.

Just wondering what her sons do not where they went to college at and such and where they are now

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
That's exactly what I was thinking, I doubt they're even in the state anymore, she said ones a pharmacist though.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
I think the wife and I are going to the next meeting just to listen to what happens. I mean really, this has gotten to the point that they are going to start escorting people out of there. Everyone knows my stance on consolidation and really, I think this whole thing has gotten out of hand. For instance, the long haired dude up ther always causing a scene, think his name is Conner McCoy, nobody really takes him serious and more. Even his buddy from Pound, Mr. Greear doesn't.
I hear people talking about what a "savior" the Rivers and Cornett are, but what a lost of people don't realize is that they started this current fiasco at least 2 years ago. Rivers made his brags that there was money to consolidate into 3 different schools and Betty backed him. Then, all of a sudden they both flip-flopped and turned the whole process upside-down. IMO, they both will be given the boot come election time. I told people when Cornett ran for the SB that she would be trouble and I was right. As she was trouble on the BOS when she was appointed to it after her first husband's death. I also said Rivers would make the whole county look like a "factory" for manufacturing clowns. Again, I was right. How quick people are to forget the past transgressions of the two people when it suits their purpose.

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
The whole thing is alittle crazy at some point something has to give and it looks like we will have to wait till the end of the month to find out what the situation for next year will be
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Was her husbands name David?
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
NO, it was Larry, he was one of the most humble men you would ever have known. He died several years ago very suddenly and she was subsequently appointed to fill his seat on the BOS. He was former Miss USA pageant winner Leanza Cornett's uncle. I think she won it in 1992.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
I was just wondering, doing calls for the campaign I had to call a David Cornett and it was that household - or at least betty answered the phone. He sounds like the complete opposite of her, which is a very good thing.

You are exactly right about that. They were both all in favor of consolidating into three new schools when the county had even less money. It's funny...at the last board meeting, Ms. Cornett said that people from Appalachia didn't want to and would be Vikings and that she "had never thought that and would never think that." I guess before, when she thought that, she just didn't care.

Which one of these schools that you're defending against closing did you learn the incorrect use of a personal noun modifier from?

Maybe I'm the only one who realizes that the one who sat and nodded and mocked the 11 year old and the party of 'me' person wasn't the same person. And Bama Man who hadn't posted a dozen times before that, is suddenly posting on here and trying to act like they can't speak.
Anybody else think that someone is just trying to have a wee bit of fun.

He really isn't a "simpleton" as you would call it. He is mostly direct and to the point about stuff. I think that once you have an adult conversation with him, you would probably change you mind about him being a simpleton.
I also think that he is kinda mocking the whole thing with the bickering that all this has caused. Have an actual conversation with him, chances are, you would view him differently.

If he wanted to have an actual adult, cogent conversation on here, I can respect that. I normally do when people want to do that. When people are acting dumb on here, I treat them as such...just like I do in real life. If he acts like an idiot on here, and I don't know him in real life, all I have to go off of is his persona on here.
Maybe instead of dogging me for calling him a simpleton b/c that's exactly what he's acting like on here, maybe you should be telling this fella to post on here in the fashion that you know him in real life...then he won't be treated like he comes across.

Maybe I have already done the via pm's? You have been out of the net for so long and say nothing about other things on here, but all of a sudden you and rock both get on her and make a comment about something like this. Maybe if you 2 had been on here all along, this board would not have gotten to the shape it is in now. I understand you wanted to take a little break because of getting "stressed" and all, but who was left in charged during your self imposed "sabbatical"?

Maybe if HostBoard would get off their butts and debug the moderation tools, things wouldn't be in this type of shape. Given that--we've managed very well, thank you very much. I needed a break and took it--then came straight back. Rock's had some personal issues that I won't delve into b/c that's his business--but it's completely understood why he was away, to those that needed to know anyways.

Rock was around, as was the rest of the mods. Now, are they as vocal/aggressive a poster or moderator as I am? No. And that's probably their fault/strength at times. But--they all do the best they can, and I respect them fully for it. It's not us being lazy as you're implying, it's the software that's handcuffed us repeatedly--which was part of my frustration that forced me into a month-long sabbatical...of which, I was still checking the board every day for issues, doing my due dilligence. So...don't sling mud about stuff you have no idea about.

Maybe we have not reason to engage him in conversation via PMs because he acts like an adolescent on here. Whats that old saying about getting into and argument with an idiot...

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Appreciate the defense of someone you PM. I don't believe I threw anybody under a bus, just said that the 2 personas that one person seems to be trying to use, are or were, two different folks.
As for not posting much, kind of limited on the time and such I've been on here. I get on and read but not a lot of topics have had me inspired to post. And as was said, we're a bit handcuffed on what we can and cannot do at the moment. Maybe if you knew PMs that were exchanged on the subject, you would view something different as well there CDawg :)
As fot the entire consolidation, renovation, remodeling, cram plan, tool bool, or whatever else comes out, is rumored, is super secret top double-not agent, covert, classified, political, religious or whatever other excuse comes up on this, I've gotten about tired of the topic. We've discussed it on various inclinations of the board about as long as there has been boards.
Kind of tired of trying to give logical, thoughtout, factually based information when all of that can be ignored or ridiculed by the simplest words of nuh uh or me not think so.
You want a logical discussion.
Ok I can do that, and instead of doing as was done, which was me giving a simple conjecture that the 'committee of me' and the child mocker was not the same person and since it was said earlier that it was Bama Man and then the persona of the 'me not think so' seems to be trying to be the same, I made a point that those 2 personas was not the same. Simple discussion since you keep up with it apparently, was I wrong and those 2 people was the same or not? Simple yes, no or not sure.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Oh and just to further clarify, so as to not be only showing up to be 'bad'
The one who said committee of me, if I recall the paper was, 'Shug' Hall, if thats Bama Man, then that's cool and if he was the one sitting up there mocking the kid, I stand corrected. I thought Halls comments were good hearted and he meant them, while the one who was basically mocking the little girl, I didn't. If that was the same person, I stand corrected and then view the comments a little less 'pure'
I never had a problem with the 'committee of me' comments because it was kind of funny after the committe of 100 and CEASE and all that. Again, I felt his comments were from an emotional, heartfelt place. I did and will continue to throw someone under a bus who stands there and mocks a little girl. You can like what the person is saying or not but when you start mocking children, no matter what they say, you lose credit. It is a point that I have been vocal of for years. If people want to sit and down, speak bad or curse adults, that's one thing. If you start mocking or cursing children, you deserve to lose respect. If you disagree with that one, we might as well never try to discuss anything. Now if those two different topics was the same person, so be, I just didn't think so, if I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.
And for the record, if committee of me and Bama Man are the same person, I have no idea and honestly don't care if it is or isn't. I don't try to find out who each person is on here, I don't PM each person and try to make nice or figure out who they are so I can pat them on the back or kick them in the butt. Bama Man, whomever they are, can post as much as they want. I actually was trying to give Bama Man a bit of credit, hopeful that they were at least trying to be the 'committe of me' person and to hopefully find out that they was not the same person. I don't base my comments on knowing if a person is a 'good old boy' or not. Counts is a friend and I've argued with him plenty of times on here, made fun of his posts, his spelling, etc. Just because I like someone doesn't mean that they are right or that I judge their posts by how much I like them. Lord knows I've criticized R13s posts 100 times and agreed with them 100 times, wouldn't know him if he walked in front of me and danced *lol*
Simply put, whomever did the committee of me, I felt that their comments were tinged with just a bit of 'smartbutery' but didn't think that was a bad thing and I thought they had a lot of truthfully emotion. Nothing at all wrong with that. Only time I down anybody is when they get hateful, spitful or just plain mean.
Think of it this way, in sports, we may not support the same team. We've got our favorites, and we want our team to win. If the opponent acts classy, you don't go against them so much. You may be upset your team didn't win but you can at least respect the other team for what they do. Same idea.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Well i looked up Mr. Halls on FB, his pic is of an Alabama banner, so I'm assuming it's the same guy. I remember them using that same name at the BOS meeting the other night, referring to Hall using "got to have the 'want to' and 'can do' and I think Robbins used that. So I'm pretty sure this is the same guy we're talking about, I mean it still could be wrong, but that's a pretty big coincidence. I disagree with really anyone who says to keep these schools open, it's not feasible AT ALL, but I'll say again that bama man doesn't yell out and act like a lot of these people at these meetings - of course the incident with the girl and him looking like he was about to blow up didn't help his cause, but still, I don't know how many of you all have been to these meetings and I know I recently threw myself into this...but it's embarrassing, these people are nothing but immature, childish and most exactly what Cane used - simpletons. When you look at their leaders like Betty, you see why they act like that, shameful. Is she up for election in Nov.? I'm going to take vid of her antics at these meetings and show what an elected official acts like(which is a moron) when she's not sitting up there, she's even worse in the audience.

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
First off I've never posted anything on here, I've only read the different topics on here which some are interesting because they offer different opinions of members or moderators. I seen bits and pieces of the supervisors meeting that is being discussed here on this thread. I didn't see anything that would cause such a big fuss, this immature harassment against bama man is ridiculous. He had a difference of opinion with several members (and moderators) and just because his ideas are different from theirs (you all know who you are, I don't have to give names in order to make myself feel important) he is continually harassed over and over again. Why can't some of you just express your opinion instead of calling out a person like a internet bully would do. I would have thought a moderator would be helpful in keeping peace between posters instead of provoking them into an arguement. I've noticed while looking through some of the threads that there are not as many members as there used to be on here posting comments, could that be because of they were treated the same as bama man has been treated for having a different opinion than several others on here. I miss some of the older threads that used to be on here but I guess they were run off for the same reasons. If anyone can tell me where I can watch this supervisors meeting (the one that is being blown out of proportion) that has been discussed here I would like to review it to see what is the big deal, like I said before, what I seen of it there is no big deal. I guess because of my opinion I will probably be picked apart and banned from posting again, so this may be a first and last post. We all can give our opinions on discussions without calling out members names in order to try to embarrass that person by giving their name to everyone and we can act a fool on here without getting personal. We are supposed to be more mature than this, lets try to act more adult than this and get back to having some difference of opinion discussions.
-
Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
No one called for a ban for him or anyone with a dissenting opinion, when someone gets on here and post ridiculous things, it will be called out - no one is bullying him or you or whoever. Cdawg blew this up into some that it shouldn't have been, plain and simple.

Interesting....I am guessing that you eaither have not been on this form long or have selective memory
If you care to read the following threat you will see the Genisus of the Bama Man R13 feud http://www.hostboard.com/forums/non-...-ok-who-s.html
I will sum it up as R13 goes to a meeting makes his views known in a thoughtful manner (whether you agree with it or not) Bama Man did not question his statements but insted pointed out that he was a coward because he did not sit on the side of the room with that Appy folks and that his boyish comments would be good for a laugh so to come back.......After Bama man saw that unlike the SB meetings where the Anti-Consolidation crowd can intimidate and shout down anyone who disagrees with them that a majority of our online community is pro consolidation (not necessarily the 2-1 or the 3 old schools plans) he back peddles faster that NFL DB and starts the "Me Just Me " comments which I find funny considering he had called R13's SB comments childish and about stroked out during the young girls speech (Heck I do not remember the date but it was replayed on TV SEVERAL times so if anyone has that info please share)
All in all if the Mods were interested in limiting his speech don't you think they would just delete any anti-consolidation posts?

Never blew this up at all, I just wanted to let people know that this dude was a pretty good dude and had some good ideas.
I think I have made 5 posts on this thread, all but two are talking about the topic that was started, the others were simple stating my observations of him. I know he is getting a big laugh at you guys on this. As a matter of fact, I think it is kinda petty too.

IDK could be his good Ideas have been buried in the "Me just Me" posts
the Ideas i seem to remember from him are
1) Don?t Drink the KoolAid just because Perry says the Sky is falling does not mean we have to belive him because he is a fountain of misinformation
This Idea is that Perry a lier that can and should not be trusted
2) Renovate all 6 schools without the bell and whisoles called for in all studys done up into this point
This is pretty vague in that it does not say "WHAT" is not really needed and does not seem to cut to the issue of the cost of running all 6 schools
Help me out because these are the ONLY 2 ideas I have seen from him and frankly neither really seem like a "Good Idea" as much as it seems to be "Keep everything as is and the Pro-Consolidation Crowd are a bunch of liars and/or stupid jerks"
I may come off as a jerk at times but i would REALLY like to hear some REAL ideas from both sides that are realistic

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
Never said they were good ideas, as a matter of fact I favor consolidation. I have stated that fact numerous times. Just saying that he is just as passionate about his beliefs as others are about theirs.
Case in point: The little girls' father. During the meeting in question, we heard a "sermon" of sorts from him about how the world would end if the county didn't consolidate. The argument could be said that he was about to stroke out because of his "red face" and the jugular vein popping out of his neck. Did anyone get on here and berated him for acting in that matter? Nope.
I really don't feel the Bamaman was making fun of the little girl, it is not in his nature. I do; however, feel that he was probably shaking his head in response to someone talking in his ear. If you would notice, there was someone who was whispering something to him at the time. As far as him being red face and about to stroke out, maybe it is a physical conditon he has, just as some people are really pale looking.
Again, r13, not blowing this up, I think you all did that by getting off the main topic of the thread.

Re: Sup. Rivers... a "tool"
The consolidation debate usually brings out the worst in folks..but, politics in general does that. In the beginning, I thought consolidation was the way to go..then later I wasn't so sure. After the way it has been politicized by both sides, I, now, don't believe consolidation is the way to go. My reasoning is that, at this point, both sides see it as a means to an end and only stand pro or anti if they feel it will put a feather in their cap. Buildings don't dictate success..individuals dictate that. In today's culture, folks never want to shoulder responsibility for their own failures..instead, they want to list every reason or excuse they can to make themselves feel better because they failed in the first place.. Once someone comes up with a plan that keeps the children, community, and school employees in mind as priority #1..and is fair to all of them, I'll support it. Until then I won't. IMO, the committee of 100 just looks out for a group of businessmen, and CEASE just aims to keep the status quo at all costs. Neither of these groups have my support, but I think CEASE's aim is purer than the committee of 100. I don't think anyone who is not a citizen of Wise county should have any sway whatsoever in this because they aren't the ones that will have to live with it..and the City of Norton isn't part of the county. With that logic, I don't think many of the committee of 100 have a horse in this race. They just push in order to try to improve their businessess or earnings in the future..and I can't abide that. So, really I come down in the middle somewhere I guess. But, I do think that if Perry is gonna push this consolidation that he sould be REQUIRED to remain as super for the 1st 5 years of it..and not cut and run before then. That's what breeds the mistrust of Perry to a large extent IMO. Scott county's schools are as old as Wise County's..and including elementary and middle schools they have as many schools or near it as well. And, Scott county is amongst Virginia's elite in test scores.. All of the Scott schools have been retrofitted with a/c and fiber optics..something Wise Co .could do as well. Furthermore, Scott county pays a higher percentage per student than Wise county does..and given the recent funding increase from the state, Wise county has no excuse to force consolidation this year..there's just too many tight wads in Wise county that don't want their taxes raused a cent in order to fund the system. Too many folks can't see the forest for the trees on this issue IMO. I don't care who agrees or disagrees with me either, but that's just how it is..
