I also had problems with logging-in at Hostboard.com last few days!!
Now I must say, Holland is a long distance....

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Hostboard has problems every now and again. Todd won't know anything unless he's been in contact with the Hostboard owners. Anybody can contact them through the Helpdesk...... well now that everything is up and running again.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I've had the same trouble logging in lately. On one occasion a few days ago, when I tried to log in there was a message that said something like "Due to the growth of the Hostboard we are adding another server--thank you for your patience while we complete the upgrade". I think the site was down while they were connecting and then tweaking the new (additional) server. Even before this recent problem I have noticed this website is sometimes slow--I think they've needed another server for a while now....

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I have not been able to get the page to load at all the past few days. I thought the site was gone :(
Tonight it loaded almost instantly. :)

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Logging-in is like playing Russian Roulette the past week or so up to and including last night.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Yes, and the URL as changed again. It used to be very friendly - hostboard.com/forums/altec-users-board/ - but not any more.

The URL has changed--I thought the site was down today and just now figured out that my bookmark was pointing to the old URL. I wonder how many of our other users also think the site is down today -- hopefully everyone will find the new URL soon. If some regulars are still missing tomorrow I'll be tempted to send a few PM's to alert them of the new URL....

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I still couldn't log in through Hostboard.com. This is the first log in a couple days now it was hit or miss I suppose.
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Yeah, this is starting to suck big time. Maybe hoastboard is just overwhelmed, I don't know.
But the downtime, the changed address, it's all silly. We need to get out of here and own our own. The move is afoot!

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
OK took me a half hour to get onto the site this morning ! And once here nothing works.I tried to post in this thread, then my browser tries to connect and just hangs. Finally the posting page opened up.11 minutes later, after timing out half dozen times or so.Had to keep clicking the post reply Button.
Steven maybe doing upgrades but at what cost, everytime they do a bug fix they create five more, and the site should still have some functionality while these upgrades are being implemented. The biggest problem I think with Hostboard is that there are way too many forums in one location (Hostboard.com) and with that amount of forums on one site your bound to have issues (Lots & Lots) of issues.Which they do !
I think it's time to open up the site on it's own.Money isn't the Issue. We can all do our part to help Todd get this started. In no way should this ever cost Todd a dime to make the move. This has been one of the Best if not thee best site on line for all things "ALTEC LANSING" I personally would love to see it get better. With additional features like a All Altec Lansing Library that the members can contribute to.With the help of it's members there is no doubt in my mind that we can make it the Best !!!
I myself have benefitted tremendously from this site.I owe it a debt of gratitude and a big Thank You to Todd for maintaining the site for such a long time !
:thankU: Todd Thanks !! :thankU: And all the members who have helped me with my New Project. That is not so new now,but have received Fabulous advice from a lot of members here.Especially from GM & Pano ! And also Earl & Brad Thanks Guys !
It is just a great place to get great advice, on anything Altec related, or just speaker related period !
It's very disappointing to see what's going on here.Would like to add some Dual Quads to the site. And just see it run on a little higher Octane ! :D If any members would like to Help, Please Say So, Thanks ! And Will pass it along to Todd
Kind Regards ~ AB :coffeedrinker:

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I'm still using my same bookmark to access the site.
Here it is:
Altec User's Board - Hostboard
Ehhhh that....... was a link that looked fine in preview of my posting. Let's see if this work...
The asterisks aren't part of my bookmark, but don't seem to bother the server at all.
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
You must be the exception, most of us are having issues, well the Folks I have talked to anyway, and there is quite a few who are.
Well it's time for an upgrade anyway IME. That is in the works (Hopefully). I have always felt that a Altec Library full of literature, data sheets,schematics,plans,catalogs,etc... should be included in this site ! Just my Opinion ! ;)
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I haven't been around for quite some time but dropped by to ask a question. It took some wrestling but this is what works for me, every time; Altec User's Board - Hostboard
Weird man!! That's not what I pasted in at all! Yup, something amiss. Anyway, just like Audio by Goodwill says, only without the ***
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
yes, the new address ends with /forums/forumdisplay.php?f=706
(this must be forum 706)
whereas the old URL ended with /forums/altec-users-board/
In other words, it is now a dynamic link, not the plain html it used to be. I would imagine that any old link from the outside is now broken. It seems like a silly thing to do. Must have happened during an upgrade.
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I tried to use my Bookmark link to visit the site this morning. My Bookmark would not work.I Googled the site, clicked the search link and came here immediately.I then deleted my Bookmark, and re- bookmarked the forum page. When I tried the new Bookmark,it brought me here with no problem.
I was already logged-on when I arrived......
Something's not right.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I have no problem pitching in some funds if this site gets moved elsewhere--the assistance I've gotten here from some really great folks is priceless--we really are fortunate to have a great group of people here. I do have a question regarding starting a new website. This forum is not only a great place to ask and answer questions/exchange information, but it's also become a veritable encyclopedic resource via the search feature. So many great threads/people/ideas have passed through this forum since I joined over two years ago (and tons before I joined) that this forum is now a vast repository of knowledge. All you have to do is type something like "duplex" or "Valencia" (for example) into the search feature and you have more information at your fingertips than you could ever imagine. If we move to another website is there a way to transfer the accumulated knowledge/threads from this site to the new one? I hope so because I for one would hate to see us move to a new website and have this one fold and have all those amazing threads/information/collaborations lost forever. Just a thought. For what it's worth, all the screens on this site do seem to load a lot faster than they ever have since they added the additional server (although the upgrade process was undeniably a mess and I'm still not positive they have everything up and running properly yet)--should we sit tight for a few days and see if all the bugs are out before we pack up and leave? Lastly, there are quite a few people "missing" the last few days--I wonder how many people are going to their bookmarks menu (their "old" bookmark) and still think the site is down. Is it worthwhile to put together a list of people who are missing and send them PM's alerting them to the new URL? Or should we sit tight and give them a chance to find it on their own? I think this thread has taken an important turn (via Altec Best's and Pano's contributions in particular--I think they're raising some valid concerns/alternatives)--something we need to consider--just thought I'd contribute my two cents.....

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I had to back track in starting at Hostboard etc.
Reset the bookmark, although it said it already existed, and now it works.
go figure!

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Let me set the record straight here.In no way are we talking about closing this site and losing all the info. Todd would have to make a back-up copy of the threads here to include them into a new site.
Also this site has had a lot of issues for a long time now and have asked Todd about them on numerous occasions and he didn't know what they (Hostboard) were doing. It just came to a head this past week when almost everyone was experiencing them. IME Steven was doing site upgrades every 3 months and with those new upgrades came new compatibility issues with those upgrades. For about a week and then it would get better.
We only asked Todd to consider moving the site to it's own home away from Hostboard. On a much larger server.Like other sites,it would be nice to post a schematic picture that isn't resized to a tiny thumbnail, just an example.Would like to see a library as well. The site would have many more visitors I'm willing to bet if it did and more (donations) to help with more upgrades. As it is right now most Folks have to go to Lansing Heritage's Altec library to get some info or (Literature) that should be made available here.I have copied a lot of that info already. And could email it to Todd on a thumb drive.Easier and shorter than trying to email.
Altec Lansing has always been my Favorite speakers ! Hands Down ! And just want to help Todd anyway i can, to make this site better than it is now.It has always been my favorite forum because of Altec and most importantly the people here are all the best.
Go over to LH and ask a question about Altec Lansing if you get 5 replies over 2 week period you will be lucky ! JBL is the game over there.
Just wanted to assure Todd that he can move it and or upgrade it with much better features and it wouldn't cost him a dime.Pano,Cal,OG,AA, and myself and a few others have agreed to split costs or donate to help with the move. Our only interest in this, is to make Todd's Altec Site one of the best for the future ! Of Course Todd has to make all those decisions, but there is people in house already that can assist him with the software, hosting server,etc... Like Pano !
Thanks Michael for your willingness to donate monies, your time and knowledge for this task !
I myself hate that darn image re-sizer as I'm starting to need reading glasses.I need images bigger not smaller ! ;)
Most of the long term members liked the site better before the move to Hostboard a few years ago anyway.
I think the URL changed here because of another Altec forum on Hostboard. When I was having problems and tried to enter through Hostboard.com after Googling, I came across it.There was like only 5 threads on it, so I think it is quite new, or not too many know about it, or Both.Another reason to move ! ;)
Long Live Altec Lansing !
Right now I'm still getting error message above the Hostboard Toolbar so there is still some problems "No Doubt"

From what I know about boards, can't be done without using the same software hostboard uses and maybe not even then. Gonna be a MONSTER task.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
According to the few tech support guys I've spoken with, as long as the board goes to a new phpBB host, it should not be that hard.
A copy is saved from here, then uploaded elsewhere. Of course I'm sure it will never be that smooth, but you gotta start somewhere! This forum is tiny compared to many others. That is to its advantage. This version can run until the new version is solidly in place.
I'm willing to lend a hand or do all the work, if need be. And the costs for the 1st year of hosting have already been promised. It would not be hard to get 2 years paid in advance.

If there is a discussion of this board seeing changes, could we start a new thread and have the relevant posts here archived to that one, because this needs to be canvassed to the membership at large. This thread does not alert our fellow members that this discussion is taking place.I'm all for improvements to the site, and would be willing to reach into my wallet to assist, however this needs to be discussed as an issue in it's own right in a thread of it's own.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
So you would rather leave it on the shaky, flaky hoastboard? Nah......
It's not a change to the forum itself, nor its content. Just a move to a better host. Same software, tho perhaps a newer version. And it could be Altec Green!

That's what I'm talking about ! Why Not ? If you have an opportunity to move the site to it's very own site, without having to go through Hostboard why wouldn't you with 1 year possibly 2 years paid in advanced.
We Have 1 goal here.To make Todd's Altec Site the Best it can be.It already has great members, it just needs the software to go with it. ;) :coffeedrinker:

If this is the topic, the title of this thread does not reflect that.My suggestion was to move this discussion about not having to go through Hostboard to a thread titled to reflect that goal.As opposed to one about log-on difficulty.
Otherwise, just disregard my suggestion. It's only that.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
There's nothing stopping anyone with the ways, means, and desire from starting their own Altec forum.
I, for one, am grateful to Todd for his efforts, and will gladly live with his choices in such matters without any bitching or whining. The recent site repairs cost me a whole right-click (create shortcut) and an exhausting left-click (place shortcut on desktop?).
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
We are just looking for a better hosting provider for the forum. It isn't that hard or that expensive. No, we don't want to start our own forum - we just want to move the content of this one to a more reliable host.
The pluses being not only a more capable host, but the possibly of better image uploads, no limits on images and maybe even a library of Altec documents, if someone chooses to build it. All that for about $60 a year.
OK, I'll stop whining now. :nosepicker:
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
We've had problems with HostBoard since the beginning.
That said, it's actually been pretty reliable, though the glitches have been really annoying.
However, this Forum has grown and developed into something much more elaborate and helpful than I ever dreamed, which is a testament to the people here. As a result, I am afraid it may be outgrowing (or has already outgrown) HB's ability to service us reliably.
Therefore, I am looking into the possibility of moving it to the servers used by the people that host Altec Lansing's (unofficial) Homepage - they host Syn-Aud-Con's stuff and do a fine job for them, among many others.
I will let everyone know what they say next week.
THANKS for your support, kind words, and patience!
Happy listening!

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
Darn Todd, You snook in your post when I was typing, shows you how slow I type.Thank You for posting, didn't want anyone to think I or anyone else was giving you a hard time about the site when it is actually the complete opposite. Thanks So Much for setting the record straight. This post was before I seen your post but figured I'd leave it anyway ! I think I can speak for most of the members here in saying we "Love The Site" and will stop at nothing to ensure it continues for a long time to come with your Blessing of course ! Long Live "Altec Lansing" ;)

But you say nothing about all the error messages people are getting when trying to post, maybe that's OK with you.And personally I don't like shortcuts cluttering my desktop,I prefer bookmarks.;)
FYI Todd happens to "AGREE" with us regarding Hostboard ! ;) We are trying to improve the site for everyone, even you ! Without any cost to Todd. He's looking into it BTW.As the Administrator he knows about more issues than we do. I'm sure Todd knows who really appreciates what he does when it comes time to pay the Bills.
As for whining or crying who's whining or crying when i see some people trying to improve something for all.I would call it something else, but that's just my opinion like you have yours.Bunch of us came together because we couldn't get onto the site and came to a conclusion ! I would call that Troubleshooting,Problem Solving, but your entitled to your Opinion.

Kinda my position. It's Todd's decision. I do not see this as a democracy where we vote on it.
Server space isn't that expensive. But it would be a massive amount of work to move the board. I haven't heard anything to convince me otherwise. It's not an economic issue. It's an issue of how much work load can be placed on Todd.
For the few bucks a server costs, lets see a server rented for a few months and all the archives moved. I think you will find it much more difficult than planned.
You can get a server for 3 months for 20 bucks. If it's true Bulletin board software is fairly universal, there is freeware out there. I repeat it is NOT an economic issue. It is an issue of can it be done without putting Todd in a looney bin.
If we have to buy the software Hostboard uses there is that cost. But a server is pennies a day. Shouldn't take that long to determine if it can be done at all.
But at this point I am not convinced we can move and save the archives. It would be a serious loss.
-
Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
First of all, it has been run by Todd on all accounts, so don't worry we don't live in a democracy ! It is Todd's decision we just gave him our assurance that if he is Interested it won't cost him anything. And that there are Talented Folks here that could make the move for him with him making all the Choices ! "Painless" ;)

That remains a claim until it's done. I am not trying to be a wet blanket, just a voice of caution.
If it's as easy as you claim, then why don't we do it and present Todd with a running board? WITH all the archives in place.
And then once it's all done let him make the decision to go or stay.
To me until another board is running the discussion is moot. And it hasn't been proven how hard or easy it is.
I have been told about easy things before only to be still working months later. TOO many times.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
The Ball is in Todd's court, as I said it is his and only his decision. He posted already, he will have word next week that is good enough for me.All I wanted was to assure him if he needed any help, support, that there are a few of us ready to help !
There is technical, financial whatever he needed would be at his disposal ! I personally feel the site has been priceless for me for what I have gotten out of it.

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
The Lansing Heritage forums are next to useless for Altec owners/appreciators.
The dictionary definition of "Ignored" should read: Altec user posting at Lansing Heritage.
A decent discussion can be had here. You get the feeling that over there liking Altec is like farting in an elevator.
There is no site that give one what this site does. Thanks Todd.

Actually, I was all set to do just that - but the recent update has made it near impossible for a non-administrator to do so. I can capture the entire hostboard to my hard drive, but it's huge. With the old address system, I could have captured only the Altec section.
But the forum administrator can do do it thru his control panel much more easily. I don't know if Todd has admin rights on hostboard.
Hoastboard runs on the very good phpBB freeware that so many other forums use. You will have noticed that many fora look alike - that's the reason. Almost all hosting providers allow installation of phpBB as part of their package. The main headaches are downloading all the threads, posts and images here, then uploading them to a new host. Then getting all the phpBB settings tweaked on the new server. A big job, to be sure, but do-able. And the Altec forum is not split into sections, like so many other boards. It's all just threads in one section. Should make it much easier. (we may loose the classified section).

Re: OT: Logging-In Issues at Altec User Board
I can't help with the moving to a new server part as I am basically computer stupid and it would take longer to teach me than to do the work, but I can help with the money part. Sounds like the server is quite reasonable but if there are other costs, keep me in the loop.

Just a thought......

Well, I couldn't have asked for more clear answers to my main question about this move. I think it's great AB and Pano want to help Todd improve the site, and they have a great plan to make sure all the info here is not lost "This version can run until the new version is solidly in place." It would be great to have a more complete Altec Library hosted at the site as well and hopefully not all the bugs, etc. to worry about!
