The new and improved Tampon thread... (explanation for EAers)

OK, see, I was tempted to post this on the EZboard, but then I'd realize it would freak out Jax if I posted it here, so here we are.

Anyway, as I said, this board started out as a companion board to a discussion forum for the comic book Strangers in Paradise.

In one scene in the book, one of the main characters leaves a tampon on a statue in a museum (yes, icky. this was early in the book. The book got better).

For some reason, this started a huge debate in the discussion forum, ostensibly about what brand of tampon was used. It got out of control.

The author of the book then decided that it would be best to have two forums, one for discussion of the book, and one for idle chatter. Thus was STP born.

The beauty of the whole thing is, Jax, the original moderator of this forum, is really freaked out by the word TAMPON. Like, worse than the average male. So, it's fun to occasionally tweak him by saying TAMPON. Like this: TAMPON.

(Postscript: this all happened long before I came along, so I might have gotten some of the details a bit wrong. I'm sure Jax doesn't need you guys filling the EAers in on the whole gory thing, I mean, who much more freaked out do we really need to get him?)

It's like she's always been here...

well you know, it's not an idle question. After all, there are so many nuances in the author's message that can be reflected by tampon choice. A Tampax tampon says one thing about a person, a store-brand tampon says something else. OB tampons really alter the way the message is presented, and a Cherokee Hair tampon just shoots it into a whole 'nuther realm.

Can I assume Jax isnt married then?

Interesting (hah) observations from being the only female in the household (and thus only TAMPON user in the bunch):

1) DH, a normally brave human being, cringes at the word TAMPON and refuses to purchase same. Refuses. This is the man who purchases every real world product that the household requires, except TAMPONS. DH even cringes when I mention I am going to purchase TAMPONS for myself.

2) Sons are absolutely oblivious to boxes of TAMPONS left about. Sons, 9 and 11, share bathroom with Mom (long story, DH gets his own bathroom). Mom leaves boxes of Playtex TAMPONS about when it is that "time of the month" and never once has either said "Hey, what's this?" Consider that they are as insatiably curious as the Elephant's child about pretty much everything else.

3) Male poodle is indifferent to TAMPONS. SANITARY NAPKINS are an entirely different story and have caused DH to call DW (me) at work in a ranting rage upon more than one occasion.

FWIW, Playtex Gentle Glide is the only way to travel.

When Tara Belle was just a kitten, one of my EX friends thought it would be fun to teach her to play with Tampons. To this day, if there is one lying about, she will rip off it's packaging and drag it all over the house. *sigh*

Don't look at me, blame admin for the cake. The cake means it's your birthday. You can tell hostboard in your profile when your birthday is, and if you want it displayed.

Problem is, "yes" is the default for the display function. So, whenever you change your profile, it will default to yes. I'm assuming you have never actually entered your birthday in the profile, so it's set to 01/01/00. Therefore, hostboard thinks today is your birthday, and that you want everyone to know.

You'll notice you're not the only one with this problem. Pretty much everyone in this forum is showing the cake. You'd think we were thoroughbreds or something.

I don't have a cake. I guess I'm on a diet.

And for the record, there are few things more embarassing than having to buy tampons for your girlfriend. It's also a sign of the truly whipped. A man knows his place when he's sent out for sanitary products.

Oh please! What is the big deal about TAMPNS???? Men who don't want to impregnate anyone should LOVE tampons.

I have a tampon story too. A previous boss went on a tyrade about tampons (male boss). I put him in his place. Made me sort of a legend!

This is how I remember it going...

The discussion that eventually got this board created dealt with wither the tampon had been used or not. The tampon had been drawn in a way that most of the females on the board were sure it had been used. It was not too long after that the boards were separated because the topic supposedly offended some people.

One time my then boss was having cramps so bad she couldn't walk, so she sent me out to the local drug store to get her some tampons and Mydol. Of course, nobody explained to me exactly what to get, so I stood around the aisle trying to figure it out for about 15 minutes before another customer (female) was kind enough to tell me what to get.

So what did you get????
I mean you need to be sentive. Buying Jumbo or Junior could land you in hot water!

I don't recall as (a) this was about 15 years ago and (b) I discribed how my boss was feeling to the lady, she picked up a package and said, "This one." while handing it to me. My boss seemed ok with the choice.
I'm now smart enough to say, "Give me a name brand and size."

and i'd like to say that i was totally appreciative when a certain board memeber who shall remain nameless was willing to buy tampons for me. In those emergency situations, it is so very much important

I don't have a problem with the word "tampon", but then again I have used them. Menstruation - now there is a word that I hate. There are so many short little words and phrases to describe the whole process. Menstruation is just a horrid word, and it has no place in casual every day conversation - don't you think?

Exactly, Tyle! Emergencies happen and if hubby would be unwilling to help, it just isnt right.

Wormie - I never use the word menstruation in daily life, except perhaps at the doctor's office. I mush prefer the cute little phrases.

Menstruation is a very long word, and you have to spend a greater amount of time saying it, so it forces you to think that much longer about what it means.

Period is much shorter, hence less of a problem.

I heard a funny story about tampons once. This woman couldn't figure out why the full box was empty every time it was her time of the month...she was the only female in the house.

Then she walked into her 5 year old son's room one day and he was playing with his toy soldiers. They were shooting off "cannons"....you guessed it. The tampons were flying everywhere.

My kids like to strap them to the soldiers backs like they are parachutes. I guess they like the fact they have a string.

When I was a kid, I used to steal them from my mom, yand the string around to loosen them, and give them to my girbils to make nesting.

Who knew there were so many uses for tampons?! Someone should write a book about it!

Just give a bunch of young children a box and they can come up with tons of uses I bet!

Pads also have their uses. DH likes to tell the story about when he was in high school, on a field trip, and one of the kids sliced open the bottom of his foot pretty bad. No first aid kit on the bus, so the teacher opened up a pad and wrapped it around the wound until they could get back and take him to the doctor.

I also understand the small ones and panty liners make great kitchen skates for little kids. Just peel off the backing, slap it on your foot or sock and off you go!

And, of course, there's always the old joke about the kid who set the table for company with "napkins". [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Hubby's bought me pantiliners when I had a gyn procedure done and was lying on the couch in too much pain to go to the store. I don't think I could make it a regular errand on his list, though [img]wink.gif[/img]

Meanwhile, he once had a tooth removed and the pocket wouldn't stop bleeding. We ran out of gauze on the way back to the dentist so I cut tampons in half and he used them instead of the gauze. Very absorbant. (He was bleeding so profusely that he went through three tampon halves on the 30-minute trip to the dentist!)

Whoa! 2 period discussions in one week. My friends daughter just got her first period and we were talking about it this week. She wanted to tell her Dad and did he went bright red :embarassed: and said "So what are you going to do now?" Then mum intervened and told him not to ask such a stupid question, "You're supposed to ask if she has a sore stomach" We've been having a bit of a laugh about it.

I guess I'm whipped, because I've bought tampons and pads for my wife. What can ya do? It's nothing but a thing.

Just when I thought that you guys couldn't EXPAND (so to speak) on this topic, you go ahead and find a way...

For the record: I recently offered to help Mindy out when she was feeling not so fresh...she declined because she didn't want me to get the wrong thing...
