Never heard of these before--or the manufacturer "Klein and Hummel"--interesting design incorporating Altec drivers and crossovers. Pricey but if I had money to burn they'd be a cool/unique addition to my collection......

I'm wondering if these would be prone to microphonics--having the amp and speakers in the same cab--could that be a problem at high listening levels?

Not a concern in a well braced and damped enclosure. Also, considering the system as a whole, high listening levels aren't going to happen. These are what i'd call "medium" sensitivity loudspeakers, driven by medium power(20-30 watts?) tube amplification. They're going to run out of gas before it gets very loud.Quote:

But, i'd love to spend some quality time with them in a familiar room. I am intrigued by the 411 woofer in that fairly "loose" appearing bass reflex alignment.

Yeah, I'd be worried about microphonics, but maybe it's not a problem. You could always pull the amps and put them somewhere else. ;)

I have seen active 3-way K+H monitors with EV drivers, but never with Altec. They are probably very nice sounding, but I would be surprised if he gets within 50% of his asking price.
I emailed the seller this morning to ask who reconed the woofers and what recone kit was used. I figured it would be someone in Germany who did the recone and I was hoping he'd say it was a GPA kit. He just replied saying "Hello! It was re-coned from German firm "Klangmeister": http://www.klangmeister.de/index.html I don't know what kit was used, but a have the invoce form them. Looks like a Horrendous recone IMO look at the dustcap on the one woofer.It's a ported box.I think Altec recommends a sealed enclosure for the 411.But I guess that's always open for debate as usual. ;)
I noticed that too--which is why I emailed him asking who did the re-cone and what kit was used. The one woofer looks o.k., but the glue job (dust cap) on the other one is sloppy --looks like it was done by a second grader in art class. Either that, or when he glued the better looking one, he wasn't using the glue in a well ventilated area and by the time he got to the second one he was seeing stars!Quote:

The sloppy glue job from the "re-foaming" is obvious on both woofers.
My wager is that those are very much original 411 cones, and after the first re-foam attempt they ended up with a rubbing VC. The hacked up dustcap is likely the result of having to shim the former for the subsequent re-foaming attempt.
No speaker tech worth his salt would allow a re-cone job looking like that to leave his shop, i thought this would be obvious to the folks on this forum.
The thought occurred to me that they may have been just been re-foamed and not re-coned but the seller listed in his ad (and also in his reply to my email) that they were re-coned. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a seller doesn't know the difference between a re-cone and a re-foam as I've emailed sellers many times to let them know they've listed inaccurate info in their ads/to give them the correct info. They do look like original 411 style cones--I had no idea that GPA didn't offer recone kits for 411's--I've never owned any 411's. Unless the repair facility used NOS 411 cones for the re-cone (which I highly doubt), it seems very likely that my first notion was correct--that these were re-foamed and not re-coned. Either way, you can clearly see the sloppy workmanship in the photos.....Quote:

As is my opinion why they are for sale. Only Bill can bring these Babies back to glory IMO. ;) I have a pair of 411's that Bill reconed and they look like Night & Day difference.:)
