If my memory serves me(and it doesn't always) i think the place my brother bought his model 17's had a $795ea price tag on the 19's circa winter 1979-80, Klipschorns, were 1440ea at the time. Comparatively, Altecs are still as much of a bargain today.:D
Apparently the price varied somewhat.
Around 1976 (if memory serves) I heard a pair of 19's in a stereo store in Berkeley,Ca.
It seems the list price was $2400 for the pair. It was fairly depressing because
it was by far the best sounding speakers I'd ever heard however the price was
insurmountable at the time. Little did I know that I'd be fortunate enough to have
my own pair of 19's eight years later.
I thought they were more than that like closer to $5000 are you sure Rontec that they weren't $2400 a piece. 35 years later and they are still selling as high as that.I feel I got my pair for a steal $909 these were absolutely Mint too.Not a scratch on them anywhere.The woofers still measure at spec. :D And since the XO upgrades by far my Favorites.Maybe until I finish my dual 15" woofer corner cabs. ;)

A year or two earlier a pair of A-7 was about 650 dealer.
I would suspect at their introduction probably 2-ish list, some dealers may have gone as much as 30% off that. Alnico spiked due to the cobalt shortage, they may well have then gone to the 2500 list mentioned.
All this is nothing but an educated guess. I never sold Altec Hi-Fi only Pro.
There's a pretty clear photo of an original sales receipt for a brand new pair of Model 19's purchased in 1979 in this ebay listing from Australia--enlarge the seventh photo (I love the search feature of our forum--I remembered a joke I made in a thread here about the original receipt being enough for Sparkomatic to honor the warranty, so I did a search for "Sparkomatic warranty" and the thread popped right up). It shows the buyer paid $2300 in Australian Dollars for a pair. From Audio annual mfg. listings in three volumes I have at hand. Full retail suggested prices, with liberal portion of inflation, of course
1977 $659 ea.
1978 $749 ea.
1980 $1,000 ea.
I bought a pair of A7X in 1977 right after I graduated College for $349 ea from Stereo Superstores.
They called them disco speakers.
It was a blowout sale. 416-8B, 802-8G, 511 horns and the N1201 crossovers.
I don't even remember when I got rid of them, but I still have all the components.

Story about money ignorance::I found some US Savings bonds in a drawer, Class E, I believe. I checked the maturity dates and saw they were near full maturity. I went to Wells Fargo NA., where I have multiple accounts and presented them for redemption. The bank associate told me that they would redeem them but would have to hold the deposit for up to two weeks. I mentioned that they were better than cash. She replied that they weren't and were similar to an out of region check. I asked her how the dollar was created and she said they printed them at the Federal Reserve. I then asked what the Federal Reserve has to back the value of the dollar. She was clueless. This is from someone that works in the financial industry.Quote:

I agree--the fact that subsidized oil keeps gas prices low at the pump keeps the masses from really caring about getting "off of oil". If some of that money was spent on alternative energy research and development instead/or if it starts being spent on this type of R&D and the rest of that money (currently used to subsidize petroleum) could be "converted" into lower taxes for people instead, we could have much more efficient solar cells for example (smaller, lighter cells that produce more electricity with less light than the relatively big "clunky" ones we have now) and better batteries to store the electricity generated by the solar power (smaller, lighter, batteries with a much higher storage capacity). Every car could have a solar panel instead of a sunroof/moonroof, and we'd be leaders in the automotive (and alternative energy) industry (and Henry Ford could finally stop rolling over in his grave)......Quote:
