Wisconsin Historical Images | Sound Storm: Wisconsin's First Rock Festival I was at this festival. Jerry Garcia with out a beard and the vocals coming in load and clear from the Altec horns. Only a couple of shots of the sound system, see if you can spot the horns. Cheers, Doug

Here's an old Doors album cover I came across "Live In Hollywood" that are using 311-90's and looks like an A5 on the ground with the 311 on top ! In the first picture front cover if look at Jim Morrison you can see another pair of 311's (90's on top & 60's on the bottom)

My guess it would have been Altec. Altec was in the right place at the right time. A missed opportunty for sure. Thanks for the Doors concert info. I will try and find a copy.

As an aside The Dead used McIntosh tube, and later solid state amplifiers often visible on stage. Were they used in a PA capacity, or for stage monitors?

Funny, a few weeks ago I saw an old DOORS video that was labeled "Live in Europe" I have no idea where. They were doing Light My Fire - Jim was ripped, of course. But he went down between the lip of the stage and the barriers to work the crowd for quite some time having girls sing or yell into the mic. As blasted as he was, he was very, very careful with his mic cable. Jim carefully coiled and uncoiled it into his left hand, never once snagging it or tripping over it. Back and forth he went in front of the stage then back up on stage. Never a snag or tangle in his mic cable. I was impressed!

Man, Doug, "how did those speakers sound" Isn't logged among the fuzzy memories I have of those days. I remember not wanting to part with them. I just had 2 way stacks (less the mid horns in the picture). Probably comparable to a couple 816s under 288s on 311s. Never had any reason to open a single piece, so no idea what was inside. I have a picture somewhere, I'll see if I can find it for clues.Quote:

Yep. Either the Dead played that set a day early, or someone got their dates crossed (like that could happen!).
There's (one of many) a backstory of course. My ex-sister-in-law was with a picker from one of the un-named bands on that spree (The Cate Bros, affilliated with The Band), and had her firstborn in a station wagon while they chased that train across Canada.
