Ha! The high frequency horn and felt dust cover are missing, as can be seen through the grill cloth. Another interesting aspect of this system is the means of holding the fiberglass in place. See those perforated metal discs? These are Western Electric parts which had been used as rear vent covers on their cone speakers. Altec Lansing produced their versions of the W.E. drivers after 1950, but used only cloth for the rear vents. They must have received boxes of these metal discs from W.E. as they used them sporadically to hold fiberglass in place for several years.
I'm nearly positive that 604 has been drifting thru the pages of ebay for sale as a raw driver for at least a few weeks, the description is the clincher for me.
Uhhhhh...... I feel like something is missing.
Bowtie you are correct, it has been. Or there are two of them right now...

There are two, would you believe....
Thanks for posting Magnarc, my memory isn't what is used to be. I thought the pasted descriptions were more similar. After review, i'm reminded how turned off i was by the seller of the raw one as he wasn't even sharp enough to cut the information on the multi-cell horn section since it is non-applicable to his 604.
This is his response to my question.
The owner of the cabinet says the following:
"The part you are referring to is not the horn of the speaker, but rather a diffuser meant to splay the sound outward. Some models of the driver included this feature, some did not. This model does not
ROTFL! I almost wet myself. What a great answer.
great, another politically educated seller, totally immune to both facts and logic.
No Bowtie, it is just a case of "Make A Sale At All Costs" ! Nothing more than a scam artist.IMO it is people such as these that we need to remove from the auction/audio selling sites.I just copied and pasted a qoute from his listing. This is his description:
"Original grill, driver, crossover, etc. Just restored cosmetically. The speaker has has one owner and has never been over-driven". That is total rubbish, any audio place worth it's salt, would have re-installed the horn.Every 604 from the factory came with the sectoral horn for the 604C AFAIK.

At least he was nice enough to post up his complete address at the bottom of the post so we know who to avoid. :)
Its back, with a discount...... At least you get an idea of the value of a 604 horn...
Mind you I cant remember seeing one on Ebay for years, despite the sellers statement!

Well 400 bucks off for the horn ain't bad. At least he is moving in the right direction.
Here's another oddball
It says 604-8G on the back but I didn't know the G ever had the mantaray. According to Altec the H was the first. He also says the G was the last alnico mag which is wrong, the H was the last. Also he says made in the mid 90's. I thought the H was made in the 80's. What gives with these I wonder?

I had a pair straight from Altec, so they do exist...some G are also Tangerine...
I have mentioned before, parts change dates were not hard and fast...I suspect initial runs of, say molded parts, were small...I mean you don't wanna have a million misshaped ones in stock...so do a few hundred to test. Then, if you happen to run out of old parts, and have new ones sitting....well, it's just economics.
I have seen newer date codes with old parts, and vice-versa. ESPECIALLY if used in cabinets, rather than retail.
Or could be H production is ramping up, and people are still ordering G's...so you slap G stickers on H's? Dunno. I was back in retail by then....
He is a (former) dealer, who IMHO prices things like a dealer and not like the eBay market.
Probably an example of what Old Guy mentions....
I beleive someone addressed the issue with him before, and his answer was that he was getting foreign buyers paying his prices. Since much of his stuff is NOS, I don't fault him for setting the prices high......... although, I can't afford to pay that kind of money.
That's Phil Brennen's site (aaokc), a friend of Bill Hanuschak's.IMHO he does charge some outrageous prices, he bought all of Altec's inventory AFAIK when they closed their doors in OKC.He prices his stuff for the overseas market.
