I know there are a few whom don't like Simon, but I have to say this DVD rocks.......Simon sounds better and better with this band everytime I see them, Luke is Luke.amazing.
The band rearranged some of the older tunes that have not been played live since the passing of Jeff Porcaro and they sound great. Killer sound production by Simon and great camera shots unlike some live DVDs on the market.
That is great news! Honestly, I have had doubts about that DVD, even though it's Simon & Luke. (How could I?)

i have this DVD, and i had seen this concert in France. During the concert Simon had done a big drum solo, in the spirit of Virgil or Marco minnemann, with some great ostinatos on left foot, and there is nothing on the DVD, just a little on the bonus track (when he read the news paper)... But, it's a great DVD, with very good sound, just no simon's chorus

Simon said due to time constraints they had to pull the solos of his, Luke and Paich from the DVD, but part of Paich's solo is indeed on the DVD.
The live cd is supposed to contain solos as a bonus disc.
Randy, I think I heard somewhere that only the Japanese editions of the CD will contain the solos. But we'll see.
Yeah that's what I meant, the Jap release will have a second cd of solos.

Thanks for your post about this DVD. I picked it up as soon as I read it.
For my money, they could have axed some of the extra features and put Simon's solo back in. Other than that (huge) flaw, its a great disc.
I agree Andy, they could have put the solos as bonus features.......But, again it's still a great production solos or not. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

My copy arrived on Friday (along with Steely Dan's Aja DVD, WOW!) I loved hearing some of the old tunes. The sound is great, and I'm glad Simon has moved away from that terrible kick drum sound, the metalic attack sounding kick. Simon is a GREAT player and I have nothing but respect for his skills, but I just can't stand his feel and approach. His fills are so worked out and lack passion. But like I said, he sure has incredible chops!
I just won an eBay auction of the Toto Live in Japan from 1980 DVD during the Hydra tour. I actually saw that tour and was blown away. I'll let you know how it is. Vintage Jeff with his Ludwig Vistalite kit!

On what recordings does Simon have a metallic sounding bass drum? I only have his later works, and on those it I would say that he has a very natural sound.

On the Steely Dan Aja DVD, they show Rick Moratta and Bernard. But the thing that is so cool is sharing in thinking behind the songs and the approach. VERY insightful.
As far at Simon's "metalic" kick sound, check out Livefields or Tambu. But I LOVE his tom and gong tom sounds. They KILL.

Danny, I don't know if it's the same thing, but here in the UK a few years ago they did a series on 'classic albums' and their making. Songs in the Key of Life, Tapestry, Pet Sounds etc... but one of them was AJA!!
It was killing. Walter and Donald in the studio talking about the sessions with all the original tapes and different outakes ad solos that they never used. They had Bernard and Rick on there too so that leads me to ask if your DVD is the same prog I saw on telly here?
Dazzler, same show but they released them on DVD. Just released was the making of Dark Side of the Moon.
You're right, ladanny! Simon obviously has metalic sounding bass drums, I've just never thought about it before. I listened to his Another Lifetime for the first time today, and on that recording it was very much so.
But there are worse examples! Listen to Mike Portnoy's sound on "Once in a Livetime" - I will never forget that horrible sound! Almost blasphemous... [img]eek.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img]
Portnoy's toms sound so AWFUL all the time.
He's just got a shit sound period.
BTW I posted Simon with Stanley Clarke mp3's.
Danny, what's kewl about that tour and video is Jeff was using his custom made rack even then. This was the prototype that turned into the Pearl rack.

Yes, I saw the Hydra tour in person back in 1980. I also remember Steve Porcaro and the HUGE Polyfusion synth with all the patch chords. I was able to look at Jeff's kit up close after the show and I remember it being a one-of-a-kind with all the raw welds and stuff. So cool! Can't wait to get the DVD! Hope the guy doesn't flake...

Got my 1980 Toto live DVD and I'm thrilled! Not sure if it's the same one you have Randy. This is from a Japanese TV Broadcast and came on DVD-R so I don't think it's "official" but I'm very pleased with what I have.
Jeff is SO solid! It's great seeing vintage Jeff footage. His right hand high hat work is just killer.

Great info Randy! I've heard about the 1st tour video but have never run across it. All I can say is that I feel very lucky to have seen the Hydra tour AND the Isolation tour with FF on vocals. I know they also played some small local shows for their Past to Present CD and that's when the live Paris concert what filmed. I remember seeing video grabs of that show when I was doing a bunch of production at Propoganda films in LA.
I'd LOVE to get my hands on any early videos for sure!

Actually they toured Europe all the time. I was fortunate to see them everytime they played in LA, the Fahrenheit shows at the Universal in 86 with Joseph were kewl, I went to sound check the first day and Jeff was setup at the right side of the stage testing his Dynachords out.
I still have the very first shirt they did for the first tour, another funny note, on that tour they did shirts and of all things..........socks

There are no OFFICIAL releases from that era of TOTO unfortunetly.
The first 2 tours in the US funny story, they bought a motor home and toured around in that. 1 of many reasons why they stopped touring in the US on a bigger scale, the last full blown tour was in 84 and it was sponsored by the USO in conjunction with Budweiser, the Isolation tour.
They borrowed money from their houses and other sources to do those first tours, formed a company OTOT and split evenly all profits. A portion of each song written went into OTOT too.
There is a video of the very first TOTO tour with Tom Kelly on vocals and guitar floating around.
