Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Im new on this forum but im a huge fan of swva football. Ive followed it since i was young and watched the glory teams of the 80s and 90s at pv and appy (as well as the rest of the tough lpd). I know the caliber of atheletes isnt what it was but in the past couple of years it seems to be getting better. My main concern is can Travis Turner lead Union into football glory? PV and Appy have HUGE pasts in the sport with something like 12 state championships out of 17 or so visits. Can he become a coach with a reputation of winning like great LPD coaches of the past and present? what do yall think

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
I think that's something decided by more than just the coach himself.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
i totally agree. Its mainly up to the young men on the field. I talked with coach turner and he told me that he has approxiamtly 50 young men coming and working out on a daily basis (which is up conciderably from the past 5 or so years) and they seemed to be motivated. I hope they pull together and play hard. idk if youre familiar with some of the roster but you can go to youtube and check out a video of a strong athelete. Its listed under josh chandler squatting 500 lbs. This young man is a hose in the weight room and a leader both on and off the field.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
I do hope they succeed. It's going to be fun to watch and see how the program develops!

Well I just hope all the players give full effort every play this year, instead of taking plays off during the game.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
From what I'm hearing it's looking real good so far. This comes from people who work with the team and from parents from both BSG and Appalachia. To say it's early is an understatement but everything seems to be going real well so far.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
I was at the parents meeting the other night and he (Turner) had his stuff together.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Ahhhhh....I wouldn't worry too much about him. He is probably one of those guys who still can't get past the thought of the schools being consolidated. And to him...let me say this.... sir... it will be people like you who will detract from our two great communities coming together to produce something special...... I was a huge PV fan in the past.....but I was also a huge Tom Turner fan also.... and for you to talk about someone who brought much recognition to our now "brother" community Appalachia is like you smackin my mom in the mouth and it would do you well sir to get off this D*** page or shut up and read until you have something worthwhile to say......and third....if you want to be a detractor to the now future program Union High School Bears football program......move to another county.....this is the NEW Wise County and we need people supporting each other and having each others back......not splitting us up. The Civil War ended 146 years ago.....we need some enthusiasm and positive energy now....not just for the county and its people but for our kids.....its not about us....its about them. If you want to keep spewing a bunch of s*** go to Congress....you willfit right in with them goons.

I dont post much on this forum just check in to keep up
This has to be the best post I have read in sometime
PVVikings2006 has the right ideal everyone needs to support the new programs
We need to look to the future
And all of us need to remember (not just for the county and its people but for our KIDS)

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
I personally think all these people who talked about Travis and/or his father are just scared to speak to them face to face. I personally do not agree with any of the comments made, and I think that if you all, (no not all of you), don't have anything nice to say shut your goddamn lousy ass motherfucking mouth. Praise the lord!!!

Nothing better than a profanity-filled post (GD included) followed by "praise the lord" LOL.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Class never runs scared. It is sure-footed and confident, and it can handle whatever comes along. Class has a sense of humor. It knows that a good laugh is the best lubricant for oiling the machinery of human relations. Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from mistakes. Class knows that good manners are nothing more than a series of small sacrifices and minor inconveniences. Class bespeaks an aristocracy unrelated to ancestors or money. Some extremely wealthy people have no class at all, while others who are struggling to make ends meet are loaded with it. Class is real. You can't fake it. Class is comfortable in its own skin. It never puts on airs. Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class is already up and need not attempt to look better by making others look worse. Class can walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the common touch. Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class because he is comfortable with himself. If you have class, you've got it made. If you don't have class, no matter what else you have, it won't make up for it.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Im the feller that started this tiopic. I personally think that Travis will be a great coach and a great leader. JMO but he needs to can the defensive coordinator and beg Bob Coughlin to come help with the D or at the very least mentor Danny dorton to become the D coodinator. The offense at Union ran good once they come to the conclusion that the I is better than the T. The D was set up for speed and well damnit yall know how i think about "speed" football. As I have said many times, Give Travis 5 years and then lets discuss this agian. To the Turner family, I appologize for the comments about your family. My intention was not to stir up malice agaisnt the Turners but mearly see what people thought about If travis could bring back glory to two dead programs. As far as Tom is concerned, my opinion is this, If Tom Turner ever had half the tallent that Phill Robbins had at powell valley Appalachia would have had atleast 10 state championships

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Thats exactly right. Nobody can have anything bad to say about Tom Turner or Travis for that matter. I put this post up because I have faith that Travis will bring back some glory to BSG and Appy. I just feel he has to take controll of his coaching staff and either can a couple or line em out on the fact that he is head coach and things will be done his way. As I have said about Tom time and again, if he had half of Powell Valley's talent He would have won 10 or more state championships.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
And we really don't want to make dan111 piss.

Re: Can Travis Turner lead the bears to football glory?
Two things here:
1) amberT/dan111--as with Tom when he was still alive (rest his soul), being a HS football coach in this area brings your name into many conversations that your friends/family may not like, and could take offense to. That being said--you folks need to learn that there are some people out there who will say some out-of-the-way things about Travis, as they likely did with Tom. Not everyone of these comments are meant personally nor would they be uttered in that person's presence...most of the time, it's people talking noise...and on here, it's a place to anonymously post their opinions. Those opinions are welcome here, whether they're right, wrong, insensitive, affirmative, or otherwise. Take the good with the bad. There will always be haters, and the best thing to do is to shrug them off and go on.
For a while now concerning this subject of Travis and his tenure at Union, there's been PM's written back and forth between some posters (some threatening), that have been less than classy...since that's the active word. This is a local sports forum. Travis is a local sports personality due to being the head coach at Union. His skills will be discussed in both positive and negative lights. May as well get used to it.
2) The idiot who said what he did about Tom will be dealt with. Stuff like that cannot and will not be acceptable around here.

Understood. (I think)
But know that it's also best to have the ability to make a coherent sentence when hopping on here and airing a grievance regarding something said about the departed. You will not be taken seriously anywhere if you can't get your point across in a semi-respectable way. Until you can do that...you'll likely continue to get ribbed mercilessly on here...and that's not off limits.
Someone speaking ill of the dead is classless and truly wrong. BUT--others making light of the fact that you have yet to pull together a well-typed phrase that everyone can easily read and understand...I can't help you there.

You are probably a nice, well-mannered person. But I hope no one from outside our area gets on here and reads your posts, we will never shake the uneducated hillbilly stereotype. LOL
Cane is right. Take an extra two seconds, and make your posts readable.
