Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Hello, and first, thanks to all who have shared their wealth of knowledge! This is my first post and I need some guidance and thanks in advance.
I have read many posts about altec speakers and haven't come across any where someone has built speakers of this type. My simple idea was to place altec 604 8g's and model 19 type speakers in the same cabinet. My reasoning is that I like both of these speakers and I prefer one over the other depending on the source and type of music. Also, it would save space and be a more modern design which fits my space. My question is this a good idea? and if so, what considerations our adaptations would you reccomend? I plan on using 3/4 marine or void free birch plywood. Thanks any advice would be truly appreciated!::

I wouldn't do it. Just plain a bad idea. But it's a free country.
No way to get optimum height except side by side at which point don't mess with the original designs.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
That would be a powerful speaker combo.....I think I saw something like that, except it didn't have any horn, just the regular driver (416 -515) on the bottom and a 604 above it. Like a stanley screamer kind of.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Thanks for the input! I was just wondering why this would be a bad Idea? 2 different speaker systems in one cabinet with shared volume to save space. Thanks

No, he wants to put all the drivers in the same box so he can switch back and forth, a completely different concept. How do you get optimum tweeter placement for both systems? you can't.
The screamer was a 3 way using the 604 high power versions horns as tweets. He is talking about two independent systems in a common cabinet.

You are thinking of the Urei 813 monitor with an Eminence sub, again COMPLETELY different.

Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
You can always stack them ! I've done that, especially when A/B ing two sets of speaks.Same foot print. :wink2:
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
The UREI 813 and 815 monitors did this many years ago, buy mainly to improve power handling and ultimate loudness, not to extend the bass response downward.
If I was going to build something like what you are proposing, I would lean towards an Onken W box with a 605 paired with a 416/803.

Better idea than all in one, would do the 19 type box on floor and 604 on top. One tweeter is still gonna be too low or high but probably best option.
I suppose you COULD build one box like that, but what's the point? No floor space savings and WAY harder to move...
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Thanks OG "You are thinking of the Urei 813 monitor with an Eminence sub, again COMPLETELY different." That's the exact picture I was picturing.
And I agree 2 systems one cabinet...yeah not a good Idea. For one thing when you run one set the other would be like a radiator.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Thanks for the responses and pictures! Maybe this is a bad idea? Looking at some of the newer designs of 604 based speakers like jean hiraga's and serious audio's, I just thought there was a way to place a model 19' type speaker underneath in the same box?I have no concerns of weight or height.

Local pub has a sign above the urinal-
"We aim to please. You aim too, please."

I do have 19's already and 604's in 612 type cabinets I like them both. I just think there must be a way too put the drivers in the same cabinet in a taller thinner type cabinet?

Thanks for this response! It seems that I may have to build a thin tall cabinet for 416's and 811's and another cabinet that sits on top for the 604's separated but is connected some way. I think the 604's would have to be in a box that could be pivoted downwards.

It could be one BIG box with isolated compartments, but gonna be hard to move around and zero value if you ever wanna sell it...I would be concerned it would fall over being thin.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Would you be happy just to switch horns (and x-over)? E.G. use the woofer section of the 604 with it's horn, then switch to the 811 horn and 604 woofer section for a pseudo model 19. I've done similar, it worked.
Have also used the 604 with the 811 as midrange and the little horn as tweeter.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Cal those are awesome. :)
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
If your dead set on it I would think a side by side would be the only way to go. you would need a ton of weight in the bottom because the top half would be crazy top heavy your way. BTW you would want at least 6 sq ft of cabinet for the 604's, 9 is optimum. In my eyes your asking the impossible...or inprobable. especially if you still want them to sound great.
Re: Altec 604 -g 416 b 811b in the same cabinet?
Thanks for the advice everyone, decided to get 2 prices from an amish cabinet maker, one for a 612 type cabinet. The one I have was just a test cabinet. The other will be approximately 19wX65hX30d with a rubbed piano black type finnish with press fit grills on the drivers only. Speakers will be separated within the enclosure! Thanks

Jumping Juniper Batman! That's a huge cabinet! (19 x 65 x 30). Glad you decided to have completely separate compartments within the enclosure......

Lose the 811 horn and add a supertweeter,and you have a 6041:

This expands the possibilities! I could have many different speakers in the same cabinet. 604's 2 way, 19's 2 way, 604's 3 way, 604's 4 way, 19's 3 way. This would be fun if possible?

Hi,
Interesting.
I have a pair of 416A woofers and 605B Duplex drivers, and would love to build something similar.
Looking for suggestions for cabinet designs.I was thinking of a taller cabinet with similar volume as the Onken W to get the HF horn to ear level when listening.
Regards
