UVA-Wise vs. Emory & Henry
Did anyone else keep up with or watch that game or hear about how crazy it was? With little or no time remaining, UVA-Wise returned a punt to score the game winning touchdown. The final score was 33-30 and up to that point, they trailed 30-27. It seems like they were ahead just one other time earlier during the game but that lead didn't last very long. It was a close back and forth battle, and I certainly didn't see the end result coming. Everyone was leaving the stands when it happened because there was about a minute left on the clock and Emory & Henry had just received the ball following a UVA-Wise interception. They thought it was all over, but they were wrong. It's the best game I've seen at UVA-Wise in person, and probably the best I'll ever see.

Ive never seen anything like it in person. It was undoubtedly the craziest sporting event ending Ive ever witnessed.
Re: UVA-Wise vs. Emory & Henry
Glad to know someone else witnessed it! Good God, what a game. All I can say is I truly feel sorry for the folks who decided to sit at home and watch commercial-ladened NCAA football on TV. They missed out on an incredible game and atmosphere. Lots of kids from around the area playing for both teams, too. Gate City's Joseph Vaughn played for Emory & Henry, J.I. Burton's Martinez Miles played for UVA-Wise, and there were many other local stars out there as well.
Here's a great article about how it all went down from the UVA-Wise website:

Russell Hull from Clintwood had an interception as well, played a great game. Devan Sproles from JJK played for E&H and played great.

Wow, great play. Now a question, i saw on this play and at a game Friday night. Is there not a penalty for running into the kicker? Years ago it seemed like if you barely touched a kicker then a flag was dropped (either for roughing the kicker or running into the kicker), now it seems like they let a little more go.

I guess you didn't see the Haysi/PV game for the Regional Championship (I want to say in 93) where Blaine Hackney ran a punt back with no time to beat PV and win the Regions. It was basically the same situation. Everyone was leaving, thought it was over, and Haysi won.

Good to see Russell have a good game also. He's one of more than a dozen kids from a Clintwood from 7 that have went on to get a college offer who weren't as good as this years Union front 7. ;)
Re: UVA-Wise vs. Emory & Henry
That play could be on Sportcenter's Top Plays.
But I also wonder why running into the kicker wasn't called and I believe an E&H fan thought the same thing and got pushed back by the ref's lol.

I wasn't at the game, but watching the video of the last play online it appeared to me that two defensive players made it into the backfield and one was stood up by the blockers while the other was partially blocked and fell at the punters feet. The punter landed on top of him. Its my understanding of the rules that it you are blocked into the punter/kicker there is no foul/penalty. That's what it looked like to me. Anyone else have a different opinion?
I read the newspaper account this morning and I'm sure the E&H coach was upset and it was the heat of the moment, but he seems to be a bad loser IMHO. He said he would not file a protest because "that would be crying and I'm not going to cry.", but he had no problem whining and crying to the papers instead.
Anyway, great win for the Cavs in what should be an annual rivalry IMO. This yearly meeting would be "The Event" of the region.

Did he toss it to another Haysi player when he was going down? Im tellin ya Lung this was nuts. This was like UVa-Wise's answer to The Play Stanford and Cal. No band, but against a rival team and a pitch as a player was going down.

Hull was in on a ton of tackles and made a pretty athletic play to intercept the ball and rumble 30 yards into Emory territory.
and the UVa-W players were blocked into the punter, hard to make a call there.
and lulz at Montgomery in the KTN. Yeah man, the game means nothing to you at all.

No. I was in no way comparing the two either. I watched the video you put up and it was awesome. The scenario just reminded me of that game a long time ago. It's what I thought of last night when you texted me about it. The other game was at Haysi and the field was pig slop as it was raining/snowing/sleeting. Just a return down memory lane.

Re: UVA-Wise vs. Emory & Henry
i was like many and left i was walking down the road when i heard a loud roar then the cannon going off when i found out what happened i was in awe and it will not become an annual game like it should because the article said that emory and henry will never ever play uva-wise again! looks like even though that have a 3-1 series lead someone is getting scared!

I didnt mean that to sound rude, I thought you were saying the Haysi guy pitched the ball as well.

If they played next year, could you imagine the amount of people coming to see that game after what transpired last night? I bet it would be unreal.

No, I understood you completely. It wasn't even close to this play. It was just a first thought from me. I just knew from your reaction you never saw that Regional game. Most people from PV were at about the parking lot when it happened and were super pissed when they heard the fans and are still pissed to this day. :)

It wont happen again. I was shocked it happened this time. After the last close game they had they said it would never happen again because they have nothing to gain by playing Wise. This sealed the deal.
