What's the 266? I don't know it. Google doesn't seem to either.

I think $200 is probably on the order of what I offered last time I saw them posted. Good price if the phragms are intact of course.

I would loved to have had the 299's a couple years ago. One of the best live PA drivers. But I haven't been out on a gig for almost 2 years now...
I didn't go.I was going to pick them up for a board member.But he wasn't sure if he needed them so I didn't go.I'm glad to see another board member snagged them though ! :wink2: :cool2:
I already have some 299's and love them 30 lbs. monsters ! They are loud as stink and can handle lots of power!

Was happy @ 2 bills and not planning on plunking down for new phragms, but you know how it is standing there.
Of course we agreed on a discounted price.
So now I get to figure out what next, and reshuffle the stable of things for sale.
Eckle states re the 299A series:
Newest Altec high frequency driver. Has good sound of 288 with 2? times the power handling. Costs less. Use this unit whenever possible. When rebuilding older 288s or 291s, use its diaphragm.
I now have both 288 and 299 bodies.
Any opinion(s) on whether there would be a sonic difference assuming same phragms used?

25884 (8)/25885 (16) from GPA would seem to be the current production option.
* Sonics aside, the 299 is desirable (to me) over the 288 due to the 299's 3 and 4 lug mounting options.
** Interestingly, these MRII564II have a serial# space on the label but it is not populated. Maybe none do?
AT $200 I suspected that the Diaphragms maybe bad,she said she didn't know I think she did.Cause she could have asked for a lot more if they were working.But that stinks what could have been a better deal now have to spend more.They are ferrite so you just need to get diaphragm kits from Bill.So you don't need to ship them which is good.You still got a great pair of drivers.You will definitely get your money back out of them if you ever decide to sell them.But once you get them up and running I suspect they will be keepers ! :cool:
Yes I like the mounting lugs as well,you can use the newer Manta's or the older Multi's with them.Mine were originally 299-16A but were converted to 8 ohm 299-8A (25884)
The 299's came with a pascalite (Alum.Alloy) diaphragm (25884-25885).They are also Tangerine phase plugs ! Great sounding drivers.

AFAIK the 288 and 299 bodies are identical. Fram is the difference.
So that would make the 288, 291 & 299 the same motor and phase plug? Only difference the 'phram?

yeah, my 291s are tangerine. Now 288s with new GPA frams.
Forgot to mention, 288B is similar but due to minor changes current frams don't fit. But with minor machining at GPA they do.

Hey Pano, are they 25884/25885, or a different #? I was under the impression only those were available presently.
Fixed one of the bad phragms in one of the 288-16's using the solder wick method. Hah! it actually works.
The very, very, initial impression does agree with OG. i.e. the 288-8k do out sparkle the repaired 299-16 (tested with 8ohm paralell impedance on the 299).
...of course, we don't know how well it would compare to new.

The (25884) is the 8 ohm 299 and the (25885) is the 16 ohm 299,is this what your asking GF ? It looks like a lot of crud in the gap.A simple Diaphragm replacement may not be sufficient GF.

No. Pano mentioned his are now 288's, with new GPA phragms, so wondering what pn he got from them in order that they cause them to become 288s. (could be: 23763)

So what happens when I unscrew this 'top plate (?)' (the plate which the phragm mounts to, i.e. the 3 sunken bolts showing in the pic).
I imagine, things come out of alignment?
Understand what you mean now. OK part # for a 8 ohm 288 is 23763 and the part # for a 16 ohm 288 is 23834.

My drivers are 291-16K and the 'phrams that come with them are 21531 Symbiotic.
The new 'phrams are GPA 23834. 16 ohms Aluminum. I asked Bill at GPA if the 291 and 288 motors are the same, he said yes, same thing. Only difference is the diaphragms. Putting this 'phram in makes it a 288-16K
So maybe one of the 288 'phrams listed above can turn a 299 into a 288.
Oh, and FWIW I just took a lot of surface rust off some hand tools with a soak in white vinegar. Worked great. The vinegar bubbled on the rust and some actually just fell off. The rust was easy to take off with a rag.
It might be a way to clean your diver.

For now, they'll go on the shelf for a little while. At least until I figure out/learn if I can (realistically) further disassemble for cleaning. Don't want to jam a working phragm in there and ruin it with gunk.
The water damaged driver of the set, was the one which did not have a gasket anywhere between the horn <-> mounting plate <-> driver. Maybe the moisture pooled on the plate, and wicked in that way. Perhaps a red flag for future buyers... if they get to that point of disassembling.
Of course, maybe they just set it horn-down somewhere wet and it evaporated and recondensed up within the driver.
