The Rodney Dangerfield of the LPD

Gets a bit of respect tonight. From the day these schools were consolidated,the kids from Central have heard how Union was going to not just beat them,but destroy them. Union has gotten the hype,gotten the airtime on the radio,while the young men from Central have heard nothing but how pitiful they were. All the while our kids kept their mouths shut and kept working on day by day...we get better and better. At some point it's put up or shutup time,and tonight the Central Warriors came up big. The much-maligned defense made some adjustments and shut Union down. After what these kids have been through (no team in this area has had the adversity that these kids have-from not only trying to get used to a new school,but losing their head coach and backbone in B.I),tonight was a testament in character Warriors. I simply could not be prouder of this group of young men.

It seems like ever since Union played Richlands so closely, they've developed a big-headed following and thought for sure nobody else would be able to play with them. I think playing so closely with Richlands was one of the worst things that could have happened to them. They're in a bad situation right now, for sure, and really need to show up and play hard next week to get past Burton. I expect a massive crowd at Bullitt Park and if the Raiders do topple the Bears, it's going to be absolutely phenomenal. Who would have ever thought before the season began that the super-hyped Union Bears would end up being ranked last in the LPD even behind Central? This has been one crazy back-and-forth season. The Cumberland is just a big mess, too, and I have no idea what's going to happen in the Clinch Mountain District with Lee High still showing that they're a dangerous team by clobbering John Battle tonight. I still think Lee will give Gate City a pretty good game. I'm just not sure what to think anymore.

EDIT: Union plays Gate City at Bullitt Park next week, not J.I. Burton.

Union doesn't play Norton next week. Norton goes to Johnson County Tn. I believe Union plays Gate City.

I'm not sure how Union got all the hype? I always thought the district was between JIB and Clintwood this year. Looks so far like Clintwood is the class of the district.

After Union's near miss vs Richlands folks were tabbing them as the LPD's elite. Even at the start of the season,Union received much more hype than Central

Yep. The Richlands game really sealed the deal. I just felt like after they played so closely with them, they were being majorly hyped and even Clintwood and Burton were overshadowed. Remember that this was going down while Clintwood was being absolutely destroyed by powerhouse teams that would mop the floor with anything we have to offer and Burton was racking up wins over less-than-stellar competition. At the time, it was just a huge game for Union. Since then, things have changed considerably!

They are very lucky that Johnson didn't play offense in that game.

Central had a lot of success rushing in the 2nd half, as did Union. Not a lot of score but both teams moved the ball almost at will on the ground. Central completed a huge pass on 2nd and eternity, but it was the only pass I saw them complete after halftime. UHS did not do much better, completing a much shorter pass on a third and long.

UHS had a chance to tie under two and a half minutes left but the 2pt conversion play was a disaster. I have no idea what they were trying to do, a QB sweep or a rollout pass fuck if I know.

Just ugh. Central is not a terrible team, but this is game Union should have won. But it was won on excitement to play and being focused and energized, not talent level. UHS looked dead after the half (AGAIN) and Central was fired up. That made quite a difference. UHS may have pulled this one off at home (not because of bad officiating or whatever, just because its easier to win at home) but you cant get on the road, miss two 2pt conversions, turn the ball over inside the 10 on downs and win.

GC comes to town next week, I dont know what to expect. Beat VHS, lose to Central; play Richlands close, play close with Lebanon. I have no idea what to expect out of that team, and that is not a positive.

I disagree. Take away the busted punt play TD by Baker and a costly Central fumble as we're driving to go up by 2TDs (only to see Union take advantage and score-14point swing when a Warrior TD may have well laid the Bears down),and this game is not nearly as close. To say that Union should have won? Not tonight. The better football team was Central tonight

Did I say Union should have won? Did I say Union was the better team tonight?

Union is a more talented team, nobody will dispute that. But Central was more focused and ready to play and that won the ballgame.

And if Union converts a two point conversion, or scores when they are inside the Central 20, they win by a touchdown. But they didnt, and Central won by two.

The snap was a yard short so the punter panicked and took off. 2 busted tackles later hes off to the races.

It was U G L Y for Union last night. My hats go off to Central, they just beat down the offensive and defensive lines of Union, Especially right down the center of the defensive line. Those two boys on Union's interior defense were just "MANHANDLED".

Congrats to Central.....Job well done..

I really doan't get where Union is more talented than Central. Looked to me both teams are very evenly matched. I really don't think one school has more talent than the other.

Biggin this is about coaching pure and simple. He can't motivate or make second half adjustments. He needs to be fired before he does more damage. We must stop blaming the assistants. Folks are unfairly turning them into scapegoats. The buck stops with Travis who isn't doing his job. And BTW central has a brand new coach too. No excuses. If we give him five years well hear five years of excuses for losing to irrelevant programs. Losing to central is inexcusable. I'll ask you all should t keep his job if he records a last place finish? If we. Lose out and go 3-7? Maybe an extension?

Union was faster to the edges, had more explosive plays, they have more talent than Central. There is no doubt, I am 100% positive about that.

Im sorry to sound like this, but PV should never lose to Wise. Simple as that. Im sure CW folks feel the same way, as do JIB folk. Just like Wise baseball or girls basketball should never lose to PV, PV football should never fall off so far that Wise beats them.

The lack of fire in the second half is disturbing. I expect PV to make no second half adjustments they've played seven games and have yet to play better in the 2nd half than the first, but I do expect them to at least want to win. Im really not trying to offend the kids at Wise, they played a very good game and deserved to win last night. But I am flat out embarrassed.

I think if they lose out, then he needs to rethink stuff about his staffing. Thomas IS NOT a defensive coach, he did not come up with any adjustments. I dare say that Turner will have some new asistants come next year. The only reason Thomas has that job to bigin with is the fact that he was a "cary-over" from Robbins and Robbing only kep him because Robbins ran the show, Thomas had no decision making in the defense at all. This , when he is actually tasked with running the defense, he has failed miserably. Think about this. Everyone who has gone to see the last 3 games knows he(Thomas) is calling the defense and it is not getting done. He stayed in the same defensive package all night last night. There was no blitzing, no stunts at all. Just plain basic defensive alignments. Had there been any stunting at all, then they would have stopped the running game cold. If you get a chance, look at the game film. Union's defense reminded me of the p-nut football players playing last night. It is very confusing and I know it is frustrating to the players because they know how to play.

Face it, traps and counters are two of the easiest plays to defend by making simple adjustments to your defense.

This is a crazy statement. Central should never beat Union? Why? What, it this in the rule book somewhere? Is Big Stone Gap and Appalachia the only area that is "divinely blessed" with football talent? Get over it. Football talent comes and goes. Yeah PV and Appy were basically unbeatable years ago but what makes people think they still are going to have the most talent. I haven't seen Central play but I know they have some good athletes. And no CW folks do not feel it is a given to beat Central every year. Never underestimate your opponent.

Wow you totally misread that post. When a school has a focus on one sport, they should not lose to schools that value other sports more. In high school sports, the schools that put their eggs in one sport (like PV football, Wise baseball/girls basketball, etc..) should never be in a position to lose to lesser teams.

Wise should never, ever beat Powell Valley. I will stand by that til the day I die. This is not 1998, I know Julius Jones is not walking thru that door. But this is (well, was) a program that provided itself as well coached, well executed team that was ready to play every game. That was not the case last night.

If you havent seen Central play, then wtf do you know? How do you know they are as talented as PV if you havent seen them play?

Okay. Whatever you say. Have you already forgotten what happened last year? Powell Valley is one of the most storied football programs in VHSL history; it will not just roll over and die, no matter how terrible the coaching is.

In the last ten years, JJK has beaten PV twice. Yes, the dominance is over. In the last five years, PV is up 3-2. In the past two years, they are 1-1.

You can change the names all you want, but this is still the PV program, it is still the Wise program, just with different names.

You guys do not understand what I am saying. I am saying Wise IS the better team right now, and that IS the problem.

I didn't say they are more talented than Union. I said they have some good athletes. I know this because I saw both Pound and Wise play last year. They had some good athletes on those teams that are playing at Central now.

The thing is that PV people only want to remember from 82 until last year. Before that PV people have no memory of the program. All that is in the past the new era of things have now started. It doesn't matter anymore what PV Appy Kelly or Pound ever did. Its all memories. All that matters now is what Union Central and Eastside do for now on.

The bulk of UHS rushing yds came from Barker and not Davis whom was touted as being very good. Barker is going to get his because he's a hoss,and considering the way our defense has played this year,we'll call it a shutdown lol

Davis is very good. Last night was not his best game, but he is going to be very good. He is dynamic in space but for some reason, our coaches decide he is better between the tackles.

Barker is the guy everyone says is so great. He is good, but lacks the breakaway speed.

I just think both defenses were bad last night. UHS knew WC was gonna line up and run the ball (57 times lol) and they could not stop it for shit. Same goes for WC. UHS got cute and threw 12 passes (why?) but they still had 36 rushes. Neither team could win the LOS on defense, and UHS was supposed to be very good at that.

The losing coach usually takes a beating from fans and right or wrong Travis is getting his now.....Wise coaches got is earlier in the season Clintwoods were taking it after the Grayson game and Jimbo was getting cussed like a sailor by some Burton fans last night at the game.......Not trying to make a point just an observation LOL

When has anyone touted Travis as being this great coach? You contribute nothing at all to the discussion aside from taking shots at T Turner. Trust me, I have my opinions on the coaching at UHS, but I dont go from thread to thread spouting off at the mouth.

But its more than last night. Last night was just the perfect case study. It showed that with better discipline and adjustments, any team can win. I am not gonna get on here and trash a man as a person, and I realize that a first year head coach is going to have growing pains, but jeez I can only take so much.

Take the most crucial play last night, the play that effectively lost UHS the game on the 2pt conversion attempt. WTF was it? Was it a designed QB sweep? Was it a rollout pass? Nobody knows, and thats horrible

That is a legit point I was surprised when Palmer was turned down for the job I thought he would have been a good fit.

It doesn't matter how many yards you have at the end of the game, it's the score that counts. I'm loving it!!!!!
