Model 19 Cabinets

Well, at least he seems honest in his description! "Probably one of the worst kept pairs in the country." Still, might be worth salvaging if you're good at refinishing/restoration/veneer work (some brand new veneer would go a long way here).....

I just re-read the ad--kind of sad that he's going to burn these cabs or take them to the dumpster if no one buys them. He's asking $150 or make an offer. I'd love to see someone here offer him $50, drive them home, and make these poor tortured souls "sing/shine" again.....

Yeah, they're a ways from here too. I thought we had some members in the mid-west--not to mention that the cabinets' location (Gering, ND) is about 6 hours from North Dakota (Volvo Heretic?)....

Well, I'm about 11 hours away, but I have a brother who is 3 hours in the opposite direction, but what would I do with them with nothing to put in them??

Would 416a's work in those?

Should if in good original or at least proper factory re-cone condition.

Only 550 miles away in Kansas City. I've got the 416's just need the horns, cd's and xovers. Those would need 802g's?

As much as I love my A7's, I also love my lowly Peavey T300's and although compression horns are lovely, so are paper cone mids and some sort of super tweeter. You could always get a couple of CHEAP 6" mids, and a slug of Piezo's and rock the world, latter upgrading to the high brow stereo aficionado Altec stuff.

Yes--802-8G's, 811B horns (which are relatively easy to find used at an inexpensive price), and the crossovers are also very inexpensive to build--schematics are available online...... 550 miles--what is that an 8 hour drive? You've already got the 416's and he'll probably take a low offer on the cabs--go for it! I drove 6 hours each way to get my second pair of Model 19's and I definitely would have gone a couple of hours further.....

NICE!!! Glad I posted these now, and especially glad that one of our members will not only keep them from going to the dumpster, but will "soon" be enjoying the sound of Model 19's. Please keep us informed of your progress--before and after photos would be great! Before photos might make some members here cringe (myself included), but I bet if you post any after photos will be a whole different story. I'm sure there are members here who could give you tips on new veneer etc.......

I was looking at the GPA web site and did not see any 802g's have they stopped selling those? Will post photo when I get them (the cabs). Trying to calculate the amount of veneer I will need so I'll know if I can afford something exotic.

I'm not sure if GPA lists them on the website but they definitely still manufacture and sell them--they're listed at the GPA Ebay store here

I just noticed these on Ebay--- 811B horns with 902 drivers for $199 each in Oklahoma--is that driving distance for you? 902's were used in the later Model 19's, and 802-8G with the earlier. If you can afford the 802-8G's from GPA, I'd go with them -- there's always 811 B's around.....

My favorite color of choice is course sanded gloss black finish, but that's just because I'm trying to match my lacquered grand piano. Add any wood veneer of your choice later. :)

After looking at these photos I had the same feeling in the pit of my stomach that I get when I see that TV commercial that shows all the neglected and abused dogs and cats that are up for rescue--I want to punch whoever did this to those poor animals (and to your poor speakers)! You've got a lot of work ahead, but from what I see in the photos they look to be more or less structurally sound. If they are still "solid" structurally (I'm sure you can tell in person), I still think that for $100 and some woodworking skills/repairs and some veneer, you'll have some amazing speakers when you're done.

BTW, I noticed that the link I posted for the GPA's EBay store showed only one 802-8g available (available in 8 ohm or 16 ohm version). I'd call them to see if they have more than one in stock, and if they only have one they can (hopefully) tell you when they'll have more. If you drive to Oklahoma to buy the used 902/811 B's that I posted, I'd listen to them and inspect the diaphragms to make sure they're Altec or GPA frams before I bought them--and get him to drop the price if they're not Altec or GPA frams to help pay for new GPA diaphragms. My first choice would be the GPA 802-8G's over those used 902's, but the 902's (if mint with "authentic" frams) sound great too--I have a pair of them in my Model 14's (with original Altec diaphragms) and the 902/Mantaray comination rivals the 802-8g / 811B combo I have in my Model 19's. I've never heard 902's in 811B's before but I'm sure others out there have. For what it's worth, most Model 19's came with 802-8Gs (mine did), only the later ones toward the end of their run came with 902's (and 416-8C woofers by that time frame instead of the 416-8B's that most of them came with)......

They don't look as bad as I was expecting. As far as those rounded off corners goes, the stongest filler I can think of is epoxy based autobody bondo. I suppose you could make your own by mixing two part epoxy with some fine wood sawdust which might look better and be even stronger until you get them re-veneered. Go find a wood working shop and ask for a cup full of their sawdust.

Alot of the damage to the bottom of the cabs is because of the missing base.You may want to build a new one I can take measurements of mine if need be.

They are the sellers photos. Friday is road trip day if the weather is good. I saw the quantity of the GPA listing and went to their web site and none were listed so I need to call them.

Thanks for the offer AB I downloaded the plains off Jeff's page. I need info on the grills as I haven't seen a pair of 19's for 30 yrs. Are they cloth or that foam stuff they used on their bookshelf speakers? Also don't the horns have some kind of foam around them?

Yes the grills are cloth and there was foam around the horn i got a set of replacements from the darst's.

The last I heard, the only place to buy the horn foam surrounds for Model 19's are from Paul and Debbie Darst who are still manufacturing replacement foams today. They have sold Model 19 foam surrounds to several members here. I own two pair of Model 19's, and one of those pair (that I bought in New Jersey) came with replacement foam surrounds that the seller had purchased from the Darsts. Installing them does result in a noticeable improvement in sound quality by the way--the engineers at Altec knew what they were doing when they included the foams in their design. They not only reduce the ringing of the 811B horn, they also absorb/eliminate (mainly h/f) sound echoing off of the upper part of the wood cabinet that extends past the front of the 811 horns..... I can hear a noticeable difference (improvement) between having the foams installed and not. The last I heard they are about $50 a set--which is a real bargain IMHO considering the time/labor and materials involved. I'm thinking of buying a pair from them to have as spares since I would be hard pressed to make as authentic of a replica of the originals myself if they ever stopped manufacturing them...... BTW, did you get the cabs home OK? Any surprises, or are they pretty much as photographed in the photo album you posted earlier in this thread? Have you decided what you'll use for veneer? Any other mods/repairs in mind?

As far as your 416A's, it is VERY fortunate that you have the newer ones with the 16" frames--they are the right size for the Model 19 cabs. As I'm sure you know, the older 416's had the 15" frames (I used to own a pair in some 846A Valencias) and you'd have to be "creative" to mount them in your new cabs. They are great sounding woofers, by the way, I really enjoyed listening to them in my Valencias. There are some differences between the 416A and the 416-8B that was "stock" in most Model 19's. For one, the 416A's are 16 ohm compared to 8 ohm 416-8B's, but there is a method that others here can coach you on (I think they use a resistor) to make them 8 ohm "compatible". Once you do that, I'm not sure how much of a difference you'll hear from a 416A compared to a 416 8B when installed in those cabs with those crossovers. I know Altec used 416-8C's in some of the 19's which are also a little different from 416-8B's, but they worked great anyways in those cabs with that crossover, so I think you'll most likely be fine with your 416A's (if made 8 ohm "compatible"). Besides, GM stated earlier in this thread that they would work well in those cabs and he would know. He, and others here, know a lot more about this than me. Much of what I know about Altecs is stuff I've learned here. Plus, I've learned a lot over the years owning several pair. After owning (and selling/upgrading) AS-101's, Valencias, A7's, Model 9's, etc. etc., I've learned I like the sound of the Model 19's the best!

I would definitely go with the GPA 802-8G drivers (or used Altec 802-8G) and not the BMS. Model 19's and their crossovers were designed for 802-8G drivers---if you use BMS you'll have a real mutant on your hands and who knows what that will do to your frequency response. At the very least, you'd need to do some mods on your crossover as it has very specific EQ/hi frequency compensation built into it which was designed for the 802-8G. The 802-8G has a usable frequency response to 20,000 hz--and has an amazing clarity and "sizzle" to it. Keep in mind GPA 802-8G drivers ARE for all intensive purposes Altec Drivers. Bill (he and his "crew" are former Altec employees) bought the Altec tooling, designs, etc. from Altec and builds them to original Altec spec with Alnico magnets etc. As far as crossovers, I've never used or heard Zilch's Z-19 crossovers. Zilch was a member here until he passed away last year. From what I understand, he designed them to have the same (or very similar) high frequency compensation/EQ as the Altec model 19 crossovers--he designed them to be used with the 802-8G (or 902) drivers. He claimed that the difference between his Z 19 crossover design and the original Model 19 crossovers was in the two "tone" controls on the crossovers. His claim was that his design kept the two tone controls more independent of each other--moving the midrange control on the Z 19's supposedly has less effect on treble than moving the midrange control on the original Model 19 crossovers does. Personally, I like the way the originals work--they really "snap the Model 19's into focus" (a quote from someone else on this board) with just a little experimentation on where to set the treble control and the mid control. Unless you can find used Model 19 crossovers, you'll have to build them--the schematic is readily available online. You'll also have to build Z 19 crossovers--schematics are also available online. If I were building a crossover, I'd go with the tried and true Altec originals. However, I have an open mind and also have a lot of respect for Zilch's work. If I had unlimited time (they don't cost much to build--time is more of an issue for me), I guess I'd build both crossovers and compare!!
