Looking more like a rematch!
With Oklahoma State going down in double overtime to Idaho State, its looking more and more like an LSU Bama or LSU Oregon rematch for the national title. That is if LSU can win the SEC and Bama and Oregon wins out.
IMO Bama and LSU would be a better game than LSU Oregon. What yall thank

Iowa State.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Oklahoma will be in the title game.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
If Arkansas beats LSU will they jump Alabama and/or Oregon in the BCS standings? If it's a 3 way tie in the SEC west the highest BCS ranked team goes to the SEC Championship game, right? The only way I see Oklahoma playing in the National Championship is if both Alabama and Oregon lose in the final two weeks/conference championship game. Oklahoma needed Oklahoma State to be undefeated when they played to have a chance to jump that high. If Arkansas beats LSU then they will for sure pass by Oklahoma IMO and Oklahoma won't have enough to pass both Alabama and Oregon without another loss. Oklahoma State will probably drop to #6 in the next BCS standings barring a loss by the rest of the top 6 and they will get passed by the Clemson/Virginia Tech winner in the ACC Championship.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
i ment Iowa not Idaho haha. Its gonna take LSU loosing and Bama loosing for the SEC to not be in the national title race. If oregon wins out and Bama looses, itll be LSU vs Oregon rematch. If Bama and LSU wins out, itll be Bama vs LSU rematch. The three way tie would be something to see! Either way, Looks like the National Title will be in the SEC for what the 6th time in a row! Thats why the SEC is by far the best conference in NCAA

You should probably just say that the SEC West is the most competitive division in College Football, because the SEC East is a Joke. I thought UGA was gonna carry the torch for the East and maybe make the title game interesting, but they're struggling with hapless Kentucky as we speak.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
You are right. I don't know what's going on in the SEC east but there way down as far as competition goes. As for the Bama/lsu rematch if both teams win out I just don't see how they can't put the two teams against each other! Their both heads & shoulders better than anybody else in the NCAA right now. Their last game was a classic & being there personally I'm not sure even now the "best" team won with Bama leaving 20pts on the field that night. Lsu welcomes a rematch per Les Miles quote.... So I say let the two best play again. Shot this one is a home game for Lsu too!

the SEC is by far the best conference in college football. say what you want about the East, but they have two top 15 teams, more than the ACC will have as a whole after today.
You have:
LSU-1
Alabama-3
Arkansas-6
South Carolina-12
Georgia-14
Auburn-24
With the Clemson loss, the SEC East will have more top 15 BCS teams than the ACC (VT).
There's no way Oklahoma should Alabama, or be ahead of Arkansas if Arkansas beats LSU.
Oklahoma lost to TEXAS TECH FFS, a terrible team. Bama's only loss is a 3pt OT loss to LSU, Ark's only loss is to Alabama. Oklahoma will have one top 10 BCS win if they beat OSU, Alabama has one top 10 BCS win (Ark), Ark could potentially have a win over BCS #1, and LSU has TWO wins over BCS top 8 (Bama, Oregon) and could add one more over Arkansas.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
I think if LSU wins the remainder of their games and the SEC championship, they should be national champs. There shouldn't be a national title game. They already played it and this is exactly why I'm not in favor of a plus 1 system. It makes no sense when it's not needed. 35 or so years ago, LSU would be crowned champs before going to play in a bowl game. This year, that is actually the correct call.
It sounds crazy, I'm aware of that, but just the fact that Alabama is already in the national title game with a win over Auburn and LSU isnt, shows a lot of flaws in the system.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Of course the SEC is the best conference, but just like most years, take away the top couple of teams in the west and you have another ACC.
BTW next week the SEC East's 3 best teams play ACC teams, so we'll be able to put that argument to rest next weekend.
I'll say
UGA>GT
Clem>SC
FSU>UF

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
I definitely see your point. But let me ask you this after watching Bama & Lsu did u really walk away feeling like Lsu was the better team after that game? Bama had 2 td's dropped by receivers in the end zone, a int returned to the two called back on a penalty, was pinned twice on their 5 yard line and battled out past the 50 each time. And let's not forget the 4 & out for Lu's offence inside the Bama 5 before the half. I would usually agree with your statement but I feel like they really do need to play again. Tho with the amount of Bamas injurys are starting to pile up and Lsu would have a easier game this time around.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
It wouldn't be a Alabama home game either, it would actually be close to an LSU home game since the title game is in New Orleans.

WTF? How does that make sense? That only shows how bad the ACC really is. If you take away the top couple teams from the Pac-10 North, they are the Big East. If you take away the best two teams from the Big XII South, they are bad, etc...
The difference is that in the SEC, if you take away the two best teams, you will still have two teams in the BCS Top 10 and three in the top 12-13.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Yep u are correct, 1 hour 10 minutes from Baton Rouge to the superdome in New Orleans.

Dude all I'm saying is that the SEC has been top heavy the last few seasons. Not as much parity as there once was.

There is not much parity, but it could be because of how good the top three are.
UT, Vandy, MSU are all on the same level, roughly as good as mid level ACC teams like NCST, Maryland, BC, etc.. (I would take the SEC trio TBH but thats me), while Ole Miss is historically bad.
Other than that, its pretty spread out. We will learn a lot next week, but I expect the ACC to win 2 out of four. Clemson is the 2nd best ACC team, USC is at best the 4th best SEC team; FSU is top 4 in the ACC, UF is barely in the top 8 of the SEC. I think UGA has a good shot at beat GT and Vandy should beat Wake.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Here we are now looking at the top 3 being SEC teams. To me, the Bama LSU game was by far the perfect example of how hard it is to beat the madd hatter! Bama was the supperior team but the breaks fell LSU's way like they normally do. Blame it on swamp voodoo, madams of New Orleans, Cajun luck, Troy Gentry having a good gator season, or what ever you like, LSU always seems to find unconventional ways to win. IMO the SEC as a whole is a monster Conference. If you take Kentucky as weak as they are and place them in the Big East then they are Conf Champs year in and year out. You can put UF as weak as they are this year in any other conference and they win it no problem. UGA isnt no slouch either. Vandy who is usually the conference punching bag is a couple of bad breaks away from a winning SEC record. Ole Miss and Miss St could be very competitive in the Big 12. Arkansas with Bobby Partrino at the helm is making waves. Look at the out of conference record of the SEC and its atleast 70% wins if not more. Either way its gonna be 6 in a row for the SEC with the first time, yes the first time, in BCS history that any conference held all top three spots! To me that speaks monuments about the level of talent the south has to offer in football. Most SEC schools in state recruit or atleast boarderstate recruit with the exception of a two or three.
Which brings me to this point. All the talk about the SEC east being weak and all the Conference rearranging isnt it only fair to consider Virginia Tech as a very capable SEC east team? Think about the money revenue that would come from it. UT/VT games every year would be a bigger rivalry than the Michigan/Ohio St game! Tech could be very competitive in the East with USC,UGA, UF being the dominate teams in the east as of late. Virginia needs a team in the SEC seeing how many fans from here are SEC fans to begin with. What do yall think?
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
The ACC has a winning record against the SEC this season and last year it was real close, may have been even. Bowl games were 2-0 in favor of the ACC.
There isn't a team in the the East that would have won the ACC last season, this season UGA would be a contender and maybe SC (depending on Lattimore's health). Last season FSU was the 2nd best ACC team and that dominated UF and controlled SC throughout.
I didn't realize you were arguing that statement biggin. IMO the SEC East is a joke. There are 4 major conferences with 2 divisions and the SEC East is among the worst of the 8.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
FSU only beat SC because Lattimore went out the first drive if I am not mistaken. The only ACC/SEC matchup that I am aware of this year was Clemson/Auburn until this weekend. Auburn is around a 7th best SEC team while Clemson is the best ACC team this year.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
He didn't go out. He got knocked out.
Clemson was playing like the best ACC team several weeks ago, but I'm not so sure now, NC State smashed 'em.

OK, name them. Name the divisions that are better than the SEC East.

That game only means something to the people this side of Wytheville and this side of Morristown the rest of the two states could give a darn about it. Tennesse and KY would be and is a bigger rivalry than what VT/UT is would be. Even when they meet in a bowl game it isn't thought of as anything but another game by anyone other than people in extreme SWVA and NETN.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Im tellin ya man Lane Stadium and Neyland Stadium would be sold out every year due to the overwhelming number of fans from Blacksburg to Knoxville. It would be bigger than the UT UK game in two seasons. The main reason is it would be a more competitive ball game and not near as lop sided. Not to mention that VT would bring a Huge number of fans to every SEC game they would play. I went to the Bama VT Chick-fil-a Kick off and it was over 100,000 people at the Georgia dome with a big ole chunk of em wearin Burned Orange! The hokies have one of the biggest followings in sports not just football either. Their basketball fans are just as roudy and faithful. Looking at if from a Basketball stand, VT would be very competitive there as well in the SEC. Just my opinion but VT is a better fit in the SEC east than Mizzu or Texas A&M. Back to the Blacksburg to Knoxville comment. Thats an area that is roughly the same size as most fan bases in America. It would be almost like a very good In State rivalry.

Re: Looking more like a rematch!
The SEC's All time record vs the ACC is 521-117-10. Which is a winning percentage of .677.
In 2008 the record was 3-2 SEC
the games were
Bama vs Clemson 34-10 Bama
UF vs FSU 45-15 UF
UGA vs GT 45-42 GT
South Carolina vs NCST 34-0 South Carolina
South Carolina vs Clemson 31-14 Clemson
In 2009 the record was 5-1 SEC
the games were
Vandy vs Georgia Tech 53-31 GT
South Carolina vs Clemson 34-17 Clemson
South Carolina vs North Carolina St 7-3 South Carolina
UGA vs Georgia Tech 30-24 UGA
Florida vs FSU 37-10 Florida
Bama vs Virginia Tech 34-24 Bama
2010 5-2 SEC
The games were
Florida vs FSU 31-7 FSU
Bama vs Duke 62-13 Bama
Auburn vs Clemson 27-24 Auburn
LSU vs UNC 30-24 LSU
UGA vs GT 42-34 UGA
South Carolina vs Clemson 29-7 South Carolina
Vandy vs Wake Forest 34-13 Wake Forest
2011 so far the record is
Auburn vs Clemson 38-24 Clemson
With UGA vs GT South Carolina vs Clemson and Vandy vs Wake Forest left to be played this weekend
so far in the past three years its a 13-6 SEC leads with 3 regular season games left, there for the best regular season record the ACC can get is 9 wins to 13 losses. SEC is tops in regular season
Bowl Games since 2008 are as follows
2008
Gaylord Hotel Music City bowl Boston College vs Vanderbilt 16-14 Vandy
Chik Fil A bowl LSU vs GT 38-3 LSU
2009
Gaylord Hotel Music City Bowl Clemson vs UK 21-13 Clemson
Chik Fil A Bowl Virginia Tech vs UT 37-14 VT
2010
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl UT vs UNC 30-27 UNC
Chik Fil A Bowl FSU vs South Carolina 26-17 FSU
ACC has the lead in Bowls with 4-2 lead. Add that to the already played regular season games records of 6 wins and 13 losses its SEC lead of 15-10
Im a hokie by heart but I also love the SEC and its proven that the SEC is better than the ACC as a whole no matter how you cut it. If the ACC wins the last three regular season games its still SEC's lead with a record of 15-13. Numbers dont lie.

Lane and Neyland are sold out nearly every game no matter who they play. I never said it wouldn't be a good game but to consider it an Iron Bowl or The Game type of rivalry is jsut absurd. I am sure VT outnumbered UT at that Peach Bowl, 7-5 UT really had no business being in that game and had to go to OT against KY just to get there. UT fans didn't really care about going to Atlanta again especially knowing that VT was a much better team that year. You may also want to get to more places than little ole Lane because the GA Dome only holds around 73,000 for a football game, I know it looks huge compared to Lane but it is not in the same area code as 100,000. Heck if there was any kind of rivalry there they would have played more than 7 times with 3 of those being before 1900 and only once since 1937. And you may want to look at your map again the area from Knoxvegas to Roanoke in just TN and VA is roughly the size of half of West VA and nowhere close to the size of most teams fan bases which I would wager for most state schools is the approximate size of that state, let alone a state that splits two major state schools such as VA. I agree that I would love to see VT in the SEC East over Mizou because it would help them in recruiting and I believe they could actually become competitive there. But at the same time I don't see the UT/VT game becoming any bigger than UT/Georgia or VT/WVU.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Yeah, I gotta agree with TB here. VT/UT would be a HUGE rivalry in our area but it would never be at the level of the Iron Bowl, UM/tOSU, OU/OSU, aTm/UT, UT/UGA, UT/UF, hell UT/UK, UGA/GT, etc.. If this rivalry started 20 years ago, it could be very big now but with the teams playing so few times, it would take years of consistent games between good teams before it would become a true big game.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
I would almost guarentee you that those other rivalries started just like this one would, one year at a time. in Twenty years the VT UT rivalry would be as big as any national rivalry.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
If you'll notice also, most of those rivalries are within the same conference and/or state. I'm with Biggin and The Beast, it will be big in NETN/SWVA. But, go just as far south as Chattanooga or go north to NOVA and you'll find almost nobody cares if VT/UT play each other.
Also, VT should be in the SEC before Mizzou. Mizzou has no business in the SEC. NONE.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Actually most of those other rivalries started off the field and was just carried over to football. OSU/Michigan was actually over the town of Toledo that both wanted to control for the shipping trade on Lake Erie.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
yep that battle started in the 1800s. What about the red river shootout? Take into concideration the UK UT game. its been 30+ years since UK won that one. Its not the rivalry it once was. VT and UT would be one tough rivalry. You think that anyone outside of Lexington to Knoxville really cares about it? I highly doubt it. The Chik Fil A bowl two seasons ago showed how much of a rivalry the VT UT game would be. That was one of the Largest fan base for that game and probably one of the highest ratings in tv for the Chik Fil A bowl. I would much rather see VT in the SEC than Mizzu or Texas A&M. Hopefully we will see that one day.

Nope. FSU/SC game killed it. Auburn/Clemson killed it. LSU/Miami killed it. Miami/UF killed it. Those are just in the last 10 years that beat it by a decent margin. There were several games where the ratings were .001 or so off from tying or beating that rating.
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
"The hokies have one of the biggest followings in sports not just football either."
That's just silly. Notre Dame football or a UNC bball team probably have a much larger following in just those single sports then VT does as a whole, VT is not close to having a remotely close following as other schools do and I doubt very seriously they'll ever come close to it. VA has no professional basketball team, football team, baseball team or hockey team that plays from within its borders(of course the Skins and Caps have practice facilities here)...that's why VT has the large base it does IMO, we just don't have anyone else to root for besides UVA or VT. We're by far the most populous state without any professional team, which is sad. VT's base seems so faithful because the fans just don't have anyone else to cling to, sure isn't because they're so successful or that intriguing.

I do know for fact that the UT/UK rivalry encompases nearly the whole fanbase of both teams not just the small percentage that lives in the comparatively small area between the two. I can say that from having friends across the state of TN and having a farm in KY and family and friends across that state as well. Yes I also have friends and family on the other end of VA and they could care less about UT/VT.
I have already shown that UT had no real interest in attending or even being in that CFA game. Heck that made like the third time they played in it in 6 years and new they were outmanned and likely to lose. Like I said just because the place looks big and is enormous compared to Lane Stadium doesn't mean much it is still just average as far as college stadiums go. You want to talk about how great VT fan base is, why can't they get more than 10-15,000 to show up for the ACCCG in Charlotte? I have been to the GA dome many times to watch UT in either the SECCG or CFA bowl and every time it was 3/4 UT orange. I will bet when I went and they played LSU in the SECCG and with a win would have been playin for the NC there were more UT fans there than VT even has seats in Lane.
Like I said before I agree that VT is a much better fit than Mizzou.

you summed it up right there. A rivalry encompasses the team's fanbase. Its like that with any rivalry. Thats what a rivalry is and is about the teams fans not the rest of the nation. Im agreeing with you on every point you make about rivalries. Its also why the VT UT game would be that if VT was in the SEC. Lane Stadium is in the TOP 10 just like Neyland stadium on hardest places to win. Thats what would make this game killer! as close as these two schools are and if they were in the same conference and division it would be a killer rivalry. It would encompass all the fans from Knoxville to Blacksburg, which is what rivalries do. and Comment about "not the small area between the two" That is the majority of the fanbase for UK is right around the Lexington and southern KY area just like UT's main fan base is North East Tennessee so that does basicly engulf the small area between the two schools.
Now with all the VT UT beef over with, lets get back to the posts original topic. The SEC will be in the national title picture no matter how its cut now. LSU, Bama, Arkansas pick your poison but these are the best in NCAA football this season. IMO its going to boil down to a Bama LSU rematch with the Swamp cats winning again
-
Re: Looking more like a rematch!
Only having been to Lane a few times I can't say for sure how much of the fan base lies east of Blacksburg but I would imagine that is at least even east/west for them. Having been to Neyland multiple times a year for the last 10 years I can say without a doubt that the majority of UT fans live west of Knoxville. All you have to do is go and you will see a far greater number of cars heading west on 40 than there is heading east. And that was point the whole time I said the same thing twice. That the majority of UT's fan base could care less about VT and about half of VT's could care less about UT.

You said ratings, every game I mentioned above surpassed it in ratings. It doesn't matter what the attendance of the game is. That means zilch. What matters is TV viewers. I didn't even go that far back to find 4 games that beat in in terms of RATINGS to even really get into the Peach bowl years. If you want to change how you quantify it and say something about attendance, feel free. If 2 teams about 5-6 hours can't fill a 70+,000 seat arena there's a big problem.
