I really want this to go to a GOOD home where it will be appreciated and lovingly used. Ive had it for almost 2 decades, always kept in a closet, cone down on a shelf. Years ago I found it mounted in a plywood box with real heavy '50s style grill cloth, sufficiently thick and stiff so that it served as good protection. The cab was basically a home-made hunk of junk, with no reinforcement or stiffening and a terrible finish, and it was made worse by having been built from the cheapest construction grade plywood that buzzed and rattled from loose laminations and void inclusions. The cabinet was re-cycled into shelving, so it did not go to waste, and the driver has been waiting fro a proper home since. Had I not just lucked into the JBL NOS drivers/horns/lens etc, this Altec would have been FINALLY due for a new cabinet this winter. It took a while, but I finally got the last bits a pieces to assemble the vintage mono system i have wanted for years....and now that we are getting older, husband and I are looking at the huge list of unfinished projects he have accumulated over the past decades, and all the collected items, and realizing that we won't be able to do it all, so are starting to thin out the projects and collection. We dont really need 2 different mono speakers, and don't have the room either.

I don't know what year it is....Perhaps you can identify that from photos, coming up this weekend...
Got some photos of the 604-C. The first one is now loaded at photobucket. More will come along later tonight.... Please note the cardboard gasket is two layers thick, The layer against the driver frame is intact, but the layer above that was loose, and when I took this driver off the baffle panel, some of the segments were actually missing! They could be easily replicated with some thick mat-board and an exacto blade. The segments that I do have are shown in the cone view photo, that will be uploaded soon...to start with here is a close up the label area...

There are no holes in the surround, that blotch, and the lighter spots, is some fuzzy stuff stuck to to the rubberized coating on the surround. It should be carefully cleaned before mounting. I choose to leave it for now, to minimize the stresses applied to the surround to just one cleaning before install, rather then taking any risk to work on it multiple times.

I never seen a rubber surround on the cone like that on a C either.IIRC they were paper surrounds.Has this been reconed at some point ?
Posters should give a general idea of their item location so that prospective buyers can consider shipping/moving costs.
Current shipping costs can be a real deal breaker, or maker if buyer and seller are close.

You see it exactly as I found it. I know nothing about it former life, in terms of any alterations or such. The surround is the corrugated paper edge of the cone, just coated with a rubbery substance as was typical of many drivers I recall from those days, many manufacturers deliverying drivers from the factory with the coatings, and also the coating being available for DIY at most hi-fi supply shops of the day..On this driver, I don't know if this was applied by the factory or an owner. The quality of glue lines and felting around the horn/cone lead me to believe this is an original cone. If it was changed, it must have been done professionally way back in the day. I have had this driver for 20 years, and the guy that had it stored in a "barn" before me [mounted in an enclosure] said it was there for more than 10. That gives us 30 years or more that it has been unmolested.
The gasket pieces are very nicely cut, probably a die cut factory made part. Perhaps aftermarket???? I don;t know if this was a normal Altec part with 604s when new, or available as an option if needed for baffle back side mounting. Today front side mounting is very popular, but back in the 50s thru the 70s, rear side of baffle mounting was the norm. You had to take a panel off the enclosure to get to the driver from the inside. Now you just unscrew them and pull 'em off the panel from the outside.
