help with m19 crossover wires
hey everyone my name is dennis and i am new to forum and new altec owner i just picked up some non working non original driver m19s i already ordered new drivers from gpa and they should be in today my problem is i pulled crossover lastnite to clean lpads and make a cap list and some of the speaker leads were not connected nothing seems to be labeled pos/neg i have searched but cant find anything could some one help me out with a picture showing where the correct speaker connections are for both in and output wires i really want to get these bad boys going thanks in advance dennis also they are the stock crossovers with two dials model3 1201-8a thanks again

And if you're recapping be sure to check the ground lugs on the 1201 board. After many years oxidation can build up between the lug and the board. A simple wire to connect the ground lugs together will remedy the problem.

Here's a diagram I made when I pulled my crossover apart so that I could put it back together correctly.

And here is a picture of the stock crossover with three black ground jumpers as done at the factory during the last couple of years or so(?) of production.

Can someone tell me why only 4 of the 6 ,connecting pins, are used in Altecs Best's x-over in the above photo on the attenuators? My 19's that have "outboard type" x-overs that sit on the shelf below the horn bypass the stock crossovers, but connect to all 6 of these pins.

If you use only 2 of the pins on a variable L-Pad, it becomes a simple variable resistor so as you increase or decrease the "volume" you are affecting the XO point and slope. I have no idea why anyone would do it this way but hey, I'm no expert.
If you hook up all 3 you are maintaining a constant resistance (impedance) in the circuit and not affecting anything but the SPL of the driver. If you go to the point of buying a ready-made L-Pad, one would think you would make use of it, no?
This has bothered me in the past so I may be sounding a bit harsh but I really don't understand. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

On the XO, Altec never used a third lug on the 19 crossovers, probbaly because it blends the mids and hi's, I think there's a mod where the third lug can be used but I'm not sure where I read about it, probably a Zilch mod?

Thanks Altec best, when I have a chance I will de solder the one wire and see if it is an improvement. Thanks again for the info!!! I have a funny feeling you are right about the "MOD" the previous owner liked JBL stuff and Altec stuff. Thanks again!

Altecs Best I found the info over at audiokarma, per Zilch this is the key to his z19 crossover. You were right. I will post my listening impressions when I have a chance to AB the two configurations. Thanks again!

Hello, I know it's an old thread, but wanted to see if it's still ALIVE ! I have a pair of Altec 19s. (just got them, the wires were not hooked up from the crossovers at all). So, I have NO CLUE were to solder the new wires, which ones go where etc.... I want to solder the wires, but do you have a picture of a normal crossover fom the 19s? One that hasn't been altered ? I seen the diagram you made, if I am not mis reading it, very little of the pins are used, some on the back of the crossover, and just a couple in the middle? If they are correct, I will use the diagram you wrote up. It's just a picture along with your positions of wires would help so much since I haven't a clue on how to use a multi meter...lol...Thanks a ton.. Mjclemm....

You usually get quicker help when you start a new thread.Depending on how old the thread is, the people may not be as active in the forum today..But you can always use these threads for reference.Here's an original diagram of a N1201 which is a Model 19 Crossover...

If you use the layout diagram I posted previously, you just need to orient the crossover correctly, so look at the values on the capacitors & determine which is the top & which is the bottom. From there you just need to count down the terminals & connect the wires accordingly. The only thing I didn't note when I made this layout diagram was the polarity of the connections (except for the HF wires) as I was just putting it back together the same way it came apart.
I've tried to attach a photo of the stock crossover as well but it won't let me......how do I delete some of my older photos AB? Or how do I use photobucket to host them?

John at the top of the page where it says Welcome Sootshe - Notifications - My Profile - Settings - Log Out. Click on Settings,then over on the left navigation pane scroll down to Miscellaneous and under that it says Attachments click on that.When the next page opens put a check in the box at the right of the photos you want to delete.Then click Delete Selected...

For this reason, you won't ever have to delete them from the board and mess up a thread,and you can post photos Full Size.On Hostboard we have an automatic re-sizer unfortunately.... OK now upload the photos from your computer to your photobucket account.Save photos and go to your album for single photos just click the [I M G] code and copy it then paste it into your post. For multiple photos like 2 thru 7 after upload, when you have your album up, put a check into the box under the photo you want to post, and then scroll down to left bottom of page where it says (Choose Action).Click that, and then click on the link for (Generate Link Codes).Another box will open scroll down to where it says,( I M G for Bulletin Boards & Forums ) ,and just put your cursor anywhere in the box that says (Full Size) and click it, it will automatically copy them.Then just paste into your post and Viola all the photos you put a check on will be posted Full Size into your post.If you get stuck somewhere just let me know and I will try and help.I have some screen captures of this procedure somewhere, will have to look for them. :smile2:

Your Welcome ! Nicely done John ! I'm curious as to the resistors on each end, where these added later on ? Cause none of mine have those 2 resistors.Looks like 6 resistors on your crossover.AFAIK they only came with 4. 2,3, and 2 3.9 ohm resistors.

Ah....well spotted. You're right, these aren't completely stock. I'd forgotten all about these. The resistors are replacing the adjustable L-Pads with a fixed load....sounds much better!
