What a difference east and west make. A pair of AS-101 just sold in NC for 200.
10x's the price. :eek2: And the XO's could use some new caps. Very clean looking pair though.Someone took care of them at least.
They are in beautiful condition--but way overpriced for AS 101's (or Valencias) IMHO..... Those are the original capacitors in the crossovers-same ones mine had.....
Recently, I heard a pair of Valencias at my tech's home and they were very impressive. So I decided to own a pair for a while to see how I like them over an extended period of time. I sorta lost control and ended up with two sets of the Heath version and one set of the Valencias. The Valencias were more open and airy sounding to my ear, but I let a friend talk me out of 'em. Now I'm back to the Heaths and they sound somewhat dull by comparison. I haven't opened them up, but I assume the crossovers are all original. Is there someone who would happen to know the values of the original Heathkit crossovers and the Valencias? I understand that there is a slight difference, but I haven't found a good source for information on them. Help?
Doodle Welcome to the Board... Send Voice of the Theater a PM. IIRC he just built new ones for his pair before selling them so he should be able to help you with the exact values. His thread is on here somewhere if you do a search for XO rebuild of AS-101 you may find it.
Yes, as AB mentions I recapped the Heathkit AS 101's that I owned a couple of years ago. It made a noticeable improvement in their sound and I highly recommend replacing capacitors that are that old (approx. 40 years old). Their values have probably shifted quite a bit in 40 years. That recap was my first thread here back when I joined this forum in February 2009. It's embarrassing for me to read this thread--I was really ignorant when I joined this forum (even more than now!). Here is a quote from the thread that gives the capacitor values and some pics. I got some great assistance from members here and also had a similar thread at LH and got some great help from members there also including Zilch. Hope this helps....
I just found the LH thread. Here is the link to it.

I browsed through it and remembered that in this thread, Zilch noticed from my photos that one of the crossovers was wired wrong. He was a lifesaver--I rewired that crossover and re-capped both crossovers..... I guess it's no big surprise about the one crossover being wired wrong--they were kits after all......
BTW, I used Dayton caps for the AS 101 recap. Since then, I've switched to Solen "fast caps" which I used when recapping my Model 19's and 14's......
I joined both boards at about the same time--right after I bought the AS 101's. Actually, I joined LH about a week before I joined this board. It came up on a google search. After I had been there a few days, one of their members (Tom Brennan) told me about this forum--that it was more geared towards Altecs as compared to LH has more JBL threads. So, I joined this forum and have never looked back! Thanks Tom, if you're still around.....
I used to post over there (LH) occasionally --I had a re-cap thread on both boards. Here is the link to my thread on this board

I didn't provide this link originally because I "revived" the entire thread about an hour ago by posting to it.....
I just remembered that I had started a second "crossover" thread here at that time--got some great assistance with the AS 101's in this thread as well.....
