Were you paying attention in class the other day?:D
Of course they're well over what you or i would give for them, or allow a "buddy" to pay. But, i think you'll see the final price land squarely within the range that we discussed.
Yeah they are real sweet ! Mint ! Final sale price $3050 for Malibu's :Can't belive it:
You guys better get used to this....
I can tell you right now you cant afford my Altecs IF I ever sell. :wink2:
Yikes! I have a pair of Carmels with ground edge glass tops in similar condition -- not in a million years would I have thought the Malibus would bring this $$.
That's more than I paid for my Chevy Malibu! ;)
What's really surprising is this price is a lot more than I have ever seen for a pair of 19's.
The high price might be a result of the location. Per capita income in NYC is over $100,000 year! Bureau of Economic Analysis
I'm willing to bet they aren't going to NYC ! :wink2:
Not just you two fellas.:mad:Quote:
And reality comes into play also AB. If you or I were selling them we would just get heckled and lowballed.
Not really... Peter's auctions are always well documented with lots of large High Res. pics. He uses a custom auction page and just really shows his gear nicely. Take a look at his auctions and feedback ! I've dealt with him twice..
IMHO folks who go the extra mile packaging, showcasing, their stuff tend to get the higher prices for their stuff. YMMV
Have you heard Malibu's? I don't know where they fell into the Altec lineup, but they don't strike me as being low end, or even midline. I haven't followed pricing on them, but given that you can probably find 3 sets of 19's for every set of Malibu's it doesn't surprise me that a nice set of Malibu's would fetch a higher price.
Most Definitely....... except when I try it. Sometimes my multiple large pictures just aren't enough with some items.Quote:

Why you qouting me on that ? I never said they were low end. What I had said is they usually sell for less than half of $3050.And yes I follow prices on all things Altec. :wink2:Quote:

Nor should it ! But I assure you this is the exception and not the rule... Me personally I would much rather have a speaker that sounds better than just looks prettier ! :Big smile:Quote:

Yeah, but you have to admit those Malibus are damn pretty.
Yes they are ! But I wouldn't spend 3G's on them either... :tongue2:
Another point to consider.
For the audio purist the Malibu's are period correct for vintage stereo tube enthusiasts.
Heard from Peter. They are going to Tokyo,Japan. The second highest bidder was in Hong Kong.He said he would have been fine with 2G's :wink2:
A good price considering the furniture grade cabs/condition.

Yah but we lost ANOTHER set to Japan.
The poor things are doomed. They have to play sukiyaki and Godzilla soundtracks the rest of their lives.
Oh well... That makes mine worth MORE.

Yeah, you got to 'pay to play' and they are willing to pay more.........

TAD'S with Beryllium diaphragms... GoTo drivers also comes to mind.. But speaker systems ? Can't think of too much. :Sad no:
I'm with you AB.
For the sake of discussion,
TADS did nothing more for me than a less expensive set of Infinity's could.
I never heard a GoTo but if I remember correctly they started with a Western Electric design and made it "better" by making each piece very precisely. We all know this is something the Japanese were famous for. I would have to ask how critical this could be. At what point does this precision make a difference? Altec could have polished their frames and used hand milled, prettier parts but would it really have helped?
From the pictures they look like glorified Altecs to me.
It's like having chrome valve covers. They look nice but wont make the engine run better.
I'll stick with my Altecs. :biggrin2:
Just my .02 dB
