Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Over at AK is a thread of what speakers everyone would like to see resurrected. So using Great Plains' drivers; 416-8c, 902's, some crossover I don't know what, and a used 511b horn with those $900 M-23's on E-bay, what would it cost to reproduce all of that? :)

Ok, no reply?, let's reformat to Great Plain's Mantarays.???? What's the diff from the 511B's?

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
VH I was typing I know I'm quite slow...
First of all I wouldn't use the 511 just for the fact that it wouldn't be a real Model 19. If you are going to go through all the trouble of getting replica 19 cabs you might as well do them right.Otherwise I would use a different cabinet with the 511.
OK what you need to put together a pair of 19's and the cost:
Cabs - $900
802-8G's $516 Altec Lansing GPA 802 806 802-8G Series II Alnico NEW | eBay
416-8B's $720 Altec Lansing GPA 416 416-8B Alnico NEW | eBay
811B's $150-$200
1201-8A or the Z19 about $200
TOTAL - $ 2536 give'er take a $100 or two :frown2:
Of course you can probably buy the drivers cheaper elsewhere but condition of gear will be a toss up.
Now if you have to add labor it will obviously cost more. The Crossovers you can put together yourself if you have some soldering skills. You can also have them made.I think Gordon W @ AK makes the Z19 on request.

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Thanks AB, new, out the door.?
Never heard a pair, but $2700 for a pair that I am sure will sound great would be just fine with me. ::) Just for arguments sake.
Shouldn't they have been offering the 511's all along?

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
I think there is a thread about that very thing on the board somewhere.I'll look for it.

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Did the 811B ever offer anything the 511B couldn't? How about the Mantaray's?
-
Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Ok, this is off kilter... let's build the Greatest, Modern, Altec Home Stereo Speaker? What would that consist of and how much?

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
DTS-182A
515B on front loaded horn
511E + large format driver,
3000G
how about this as a start for components....
crossover deployment would be critical

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
I didn't know what a DTS-18A was, so I googled it and found these. :)

It's a big hunk of aluminum there. And such a large chunk of aluminum is probably prohibitively expensive these days, not to mention shipping. Plus, we'd expect one would need a foundry to cast them... there seem to be modern knockoffs coming out of asia.

This gets more into horn theory than I am blessed to understand, but suffice it to say they are relatively different horn types. (e.g. between 811/511 sectorals, and MR's)
Other than whatever cutoff frequency the desired MR is, the other difference being that MR are CD (constant directivity) horns, and the sectorals are not.

I think Jean Hiraga may have done this, for home use in a reasonable sized space. Look at the reveiws of his speakers at the Munich show. How he does this? I would love to know..... I have found a few hints.... His reference "altec speakers " that he compares all speakers to, from what I have read, they must be something special!!!! Remember we all hear differently, listen to different types of music, and have educated our ears differently.

I really think that depends on who you ask... :biggrin2: :wink2:

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Just ask me, I know. :p
Really I mostly find the 811 easier to build a crossover for, that's all.

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Small to medium sized rooms I like the 811's.
For the large to extra large listening area the 511 works for me.
Never heard the mantaray, would like too!

I agree, and would just add that i also prefer the 811 crossed at 1200+. I think the 811's shorter acoustic path lends to slightly better VHF, but like a good trip it could all be in my mind.:D

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Everyone seems to be all over the map on their XO points. Two crossovers from GPA are at least $200 and what if I pick the wrong one? Wouldn't it be just as cheap to go active with a cheap electronic XO and get a used Crown D75 for the HF?
This one has a sub-out also.

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
How does one go about recreating the mid/tweet level control for the M19, does GPA sell them along with the crossover for the 19? I just saw a few nice sets of 811B horns for the 19, one set is a $60+ and the other just at $5 and change on ebay. Both sets look in very good condition :)

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Current ebay prices on running auctions are fairly irrelevant.
The green pair will bring in the neighborhood of 250, and the black ones about a hundred or so less.
The "completed listings" link is your friend if you want to know value/price trends.
To answer your question about the L-pads/faceplate, you either make something yourself, buy used originals, or adapt a used different model that used the same chassis/faceplate as the 19. I'd just buy a pair of used 19XO's myself.

Re: Cost to build a Brand New Model 19
Thanks bowtie :) I've never purchased on ebay and just signed up, so there will be a learning curve for sure lol.. I thought to maybe slowly purchase components here and there to put together a 19..
Researching the M19 has been interesting and sort of tough too.. On one hand you have many that say it was one of the best home speakers made as is and still is, and on the other hand people that want to improve it via changing the horn/dims etc.. I can totally get how a different horn or altering driver height could take it further, but unless it was documented with a how too guide I'd be lost to try and change things etc..
I've come to the conclusion that maybe I should set the goal to make mine as per the Altec design using GPA drivers and the new foam for the horn etc.. So on the used circuit I guess I'd just need the horns and the L-Pads ...
