Thats what i thought too....i won these on an online estate auction last week.maybe some of you saw them too..the auction company only posted a pic of the front.and were not able to take more pics (i know i know.my fault and paid dearly ..but lurking on these damn forums has created an altec addiction)...anyway..went to pick them up(almost 5 hours each way)
When i got there looking at the back of the cabs concerned me..there was no crossover ever installed on the cab....just a washer and a screw covering a small hole where the knob would be.but it looked factory...My wife was with me i dont dare say anything to her....i didnt want to be sick and have an argument at the same time..it was hard enough trying to justify the purchase...lol
so i get these babies home,get them in the garage ,take the back off and .....well..have been drinking ever since....it was a gamble and i lost....

not altec for sure, but seems the drivers may be OK in use, from some light reading.....

You need to check your local and state laws, you may or may not have some legal recourse.

I wish i could say nothing like that has ever happened to me, but it'd be a lie. Another bright note to consider is this lesson won't soon be forgotten and likely won't ever happen again in your future.

Now, if you want to look on the bright side, you have a basically clean slate to start with and could have an end result that's a cut above the 846A.

They were not listed as Altecs....they were listed as "Mid Century Modern"..Im pretty much stuck with them..Ive been on the hunt for a clean pair of these...It doesnt look like the baffle has been changed and there is no cut out for the horn....So I am trying to convince myself that Ev somehow bought up all the old stock empty Valencia cabs and sold them at Sears.........lol....Thanks to all of you by the way for all the info I've learned about Altec on this forum....I'm new to audio equipment but old in guitars and amps,its a new hobby for me....I remember when the music stores were loaded with A7's and they couldnt give them away...

Are they full valencia dimensions?

I've seen cabinets like those before that had housed 604E's since new. It's been a long time, but i thought they were a bit smaller than valencia cabinets, maybe not.

Anywho, just find you a deal on a pair of 604's and you'll be whole again.:D

The cabs are 30' high 25 1/2" wide and 18" deep..They are smaller...damn..

Come on, I won't rub it in, but how much did you waste?

LOL...Lets just say by the time i make them right i could possibly break the asian record for the highest price ever paid for Valencias..actually it considerably less than market value..and they are really clean..it hurt but not as much as it could have....as for what Bowtie said i came across a few pics of these with the same baffle housing 604's..so it might not be as bad as i thought...

Judging by the baffle and plugged XO hole, these were never Valencias, but early 848 Flamencos with a 420.........

they aren't altecs, but they aren't trash ...

I Know just how you feel.... I got stuck with some EV's in cabinets the guy was calling them Voice of the theater cabs... I got a 604 E I might be looking to get rid of....

In the future insist on Pictures inside and out. But as others have noted you can grab a pair of 604's to put in there.As GM also noted the EV driver has a baffle plug.Which originally probably had a 15" speaker in there. The cabs look pretty clean though.

Put down the drink and get to work on finding a nice pair of 604's.Or you can swap out the baffle and install a 416 -811 horn and driver.You can find good deals on Craigslist.eBay prices are going through the roof.IMO you can get brand new drivers from Bill cheaper than original Altecs these days from that auction site....

I normally would request more pics but the auction was starting about an hour after i discovered them.by the time i registered on the site the auction was rolling.It wasn't an Ebay auction. I've been getting some really great deals on some of these estate auction sites.the only problem is that most of there search features are awfull and 9 out of 10 times the items are listed incorrectly...for instance about three months back i won a mc60 listed as "Electric Brain Unit and box of wire"
32 bucks and it was mine.....I know that will never happen again but it makes things like this not so bad.....

Those look like Madrid cabinets to me which came with 420y. 872A or B?

Im still trying to determine what they are...the size isn't right for valencia's or madrid's....every flamenco i see has a different grill than these...

Yeah they're deffinitely not Flamencos. I wonder if Heathkit made a mock Valencia like they did the Flamenco?

I did run them for a bit today and the E.V's sounded pretty good...not what i expected

Ive been searching all day and really havent come up with anything....im gonna take out one of the speakers tonight and see whats there

When i measured these i wasn't including the overhang on the top.they are indeed valencia cabs..but...they must be very early models????

I just found a sheet from a 1965 catalog these are 859a cabs....and could be ordered with
415 biflex
602 Duplex
604 Duplex
605 Duplex..also you could put 12 inch speakers with a supplied adapter.....i have a pdf of the sheet but dont know how to upload it...

When you click post make sure you use the advanced,and just scroll down to Manage Attachments...

Most of us use a photo hosting site for images/photos and then just post the IMG code from Photobucket,Flickr,Picasso,Image Shack,etc...

One other note I should mention file size limit for a .pdf is 19.5 kb's so it is really useless as almost all the .pdf's will be too big to upload so linking into them is the best way.

The plot thickens! Do you think that the EV drivers are original, or that there was an Altec driver in there that was replaced? Not sure how you'd tell, but there may be signs.

I dont think they are original...you can see a ring around the baffle where the original speaker was.....I'm just glad that the baffle wasn't butchered....

Exactly ! A Mac MC60 for $32 bucks I no longer feel bad for you ! :tongue2: Just Kidding.The lesson here is "You Win Some You Lose Some" nobody wins everytime out especially with used gear on eBay or Craigslist. I think you'll be OK though. :smile2:
