pair altec 604e with sequential serial numbers ? cabinets

I just bought a pair of altec 604e's with crossovers in what i think are factory cabinets that appear to never have been removed. The guy i bought them from said his dad bought them in the late 60s or early 70s. Wonder if anyone can help figure out if the cabinets are altec or something else. have pics i can email

Nice grab. :) I don't recognize them but that doesn't mean they're not Altec. Could also be Heathkit or Barzilay cabs. They were the other cabinet makers that put Altec speakers in their cabs.

Agree with Cradledorf, i think they're furniture company built cabinets, Barzilay, Acousticraft, or Cabinart.

If you're referring to the numbers beginning with 391, those aren't serial numbers. 391 is Altec's EIA manufacturer code, the 4th digit is the last number of the year of manufacture, and the last 2 digits are the week.

Very nice. Those were certainly well taken care of. Superb find.

Most Altec cabs had a paper label on them so look for an area on the backs that looks like it's lighter where a label might have been, also check around inside the cabs and under them to see if you can dig up any more info on the maker.

About 90% certain not Altec cabs. Empty cabs were VERY common back then. I miss the days of DIY, I remember keeping boxes of electronics to scavenge for parts, The best tube sockets were old military gear.

i live in ky. don't know how much longer i will have the speakers i am getting ready to have to sell them i think i have some things going on with my twin girls so i might have to unload them unfortunately.
