Methinks you're going to find the Q is far to low to make this work. You'll need a woofer that goes fairly high to take over. Been there. :)
The curved baffle top looks cool, but it's a bad idea sonically. It puts the entire top edge at the same distance from the driver and that's not something you want to do.
OB works for high Qt speaks like the Carver Amazing and electrostats, but without a helper woofer or dramatic eq of some kind, I just don't see how a 604 could give satisfying bass performance this way.
Dorf, didn't you already try the open baffle failed experiment? :) Maybe if you built a solid wood half dome? Buy a bunch of Bass wood.
It won't. You have to trade away midrange to get it to balance the bass. There is a good reason they put woofers in boxes, to minimize the bass losses. On an open baffle you have to use "EQ", either active or passive, to restore the tonal balance.Quote:

I have 605Bs in 21" square baffles. Sure enough, they don't go much below 60hz or so.
But above that they are marvelous. I'm building H baffles (open backed boxes really) for
18" woofers that will be driven with equalization to fill that in. Inspired by JB's OBs
that Pano used at LASF in 2010 (i heard them in 2008), I expect to end up in the same
neighborhood. I strongly recommend a quick and dirty test, at least. I doubt you will
be disappointed.

48" tall puts your driver at a good hight. It also avoids having all baffle sides the same dimension, however much that matters.
How about a 1/4 sheet of ply? 24x48" with asymmetrical wings. Smaller footprint than your 36" baffle.

Yes the OB really reduces the boxy sound and still preserves a lot of the bass.My 604D in OB are capable to reproduce good bass till 120 hz. Below two khorn reproduce from 40 to 120 hz. You can see at :

If you used a large oak wine barrel cut in half,(planter) and stuck the driver in the closed end, laying on their side, would they still be an open baffel?
I ment with the open end facing the wall and the top of the barrel with the speaker mounted in it facing you.

Cradledorf, My first try, I come up with an ovel 3'-3" wide x 4'-7" tall by just picking a random even number dimension for an ellipse, leaving a 1/4" gap from the edge for cutting. I can show you, modify it and send you a grid in 1/2" or so dimensions to plot it and cut it out. :) I could also send you pdf file with a bunch of 8.5xll sheets you could print out and tape together for a full scale template.
That's pretty cool, in the old days, I would have had to place two nails along the long axis and using a piece of looped string and a lot of trial and lots of error, draw out an ellipse.

That first picture......... if you put a receiver on the floor between the 604's it would look like eyes and a nose!
(edit...edit) Cradel, I am confused, I am listing to crappy, You Tube "Peter Gabrial" at unGodly volumes out of my sinfull A8 clones. He sounds great, and no boxy bass. What are you complaining about?
