ALTEC 511E HORNS | eBay
Is it my computer or does the third pic enlarged look as if one of the joints is split?
They look just like the pair I have. With throats rougher than Louis Armstrong's.
It does look like the top part of the center fin on that horn is offset, maybe having absorbed an impact. The top and bottom dividers are not joined by welds, but rather there is a gap that is filled with aqauplas.
Nice and look to be factory made. Four days left on the auction. I curious what they will finally sell for.
I enlarged & sharpened one of the photos. They are welded, not completely, open in the rear of the dividers. IRC, most were done the same way. Quality of the photo from the bay is far from teriffic.
The extra holes won't add to their value, and turn me off a good bit. Apparently grampa needed something to test out the new Black & Decker on.:D
Agreed Steve ! My 3 pair needed some TLC as well. But we all know Altec went through some quality control issues.
That actually bothers you ? It doesn't bother me a bit. IMO 511E's at least some or most have seemed to be just modified 511B's.At least the mounting flange anyway.I like the extra holes makes them more versatile,so you can use a Small or Large format with them.Once you mount the 288 you won't see the other holes .I have pairs with them and without them and that didn't deter me when purchasing them.I bought them to use and wasn't concerned with the value for resale purposes.
I'm actually referring to the randomly drilled holes on the mounting flanges, not the driver flanges, the small format driver holes may well be stock. They're not symmetrical in location and don't even land on the centerline of the factory holes, just sad.
I'm really referring to the cosmetics including the black overspray which cannot be properly corrected without damaging/re-doing the factory finish.
For me, and the collectors i know this ruins much of their value as collectibles. Sonically, they're 511's and if i were going to spend a few hundred or more on a pair of horns, it wouldn't be 511's of any throat size short of a pristine unmolested pair of 511E which these sadly are not.
Most of them now belong to the collectors, condition being the majority of everything. And, of course when we're talking about something that multiple forum members own, they're not quite rare. Not yet.Quote:
Try and find a pair of pristine unmolested 511E's anywhere these days ?
I could not agree more.:DQuote:
As they say To each his own !
For 300+, i'll gladly cut and re-weld a pair of 511b's. Damped, painted, and a new pair of foilcals from that fella on ebay, they'll fool 90% of the pocket internet experts, and i'll still have enough cash leftover to take my GF out for an evening to remember. :D
What like these ? :biggrin2: These I got to restore a couple of pair that I have. And that I'm going to use on my project. They are going to look like they just left the Altec plant...:p

Go for serial numbers 00001 and 00002 while you're at it!
Nope !!! I already have serial Numbers on my horns. The original stickers aren't in great shape. So when I finish restoring them I will use the new stickers along with their original serials, 00404,00411,00215,00225 ! They aren't FAKE ! :wink2:
My horns aren't for sale nor will they be !! Ever ! Like Nipper says when I'm gone someone will be selling my gear for $60K :biggrin2:
