I thought the guy had an 811B until I saw why he was calling it a square horn. I have to assume it's missing a bolt on throat, like what's typically used on large format horns.
Anybody know what it is? Is it Altec, but early?

I don't think it's an Altec.
My WAG is it was cast by the company that made the horns for Cerwin Vega, and Kustom.
I know of a fella that could probably offer some of the most useful input we could hope to find.

Yup here is a Kustom 4G+2H ! They were guitar speakers.These horns look like they require a throat attachment that aren't included with this auction.Trying to find them would be next to impossible me thinks.And use a large format Driver.They have a 4 bolt square configuation for mounting.

Here is a 15" Kustom woofer that looks like a Altec Basket (416A or 515 15" baskets).The cone looks very similar as well to a 421 with a aluminum dust cap.I wouldn't be surprised if Altec made some of these parts for Kustom to Kustoms specifications. Kustom was located in the LA area IIRC.

AFAIK, Kustom only used small format 3/4 inch throat threaded drivers. So i kinda doubt the ebay horn requiring the adapter was from Kustom. Sure looks like it could have come from the same manufacturer though.
A WAG of mine on that particular design is that there were optional throats to accommodate one, two, or four 1 inch compression drivers similar to what Cerwin Vega was doing in the late 60's/early 70's. I don't think it was to adapt large format drivers. The 800hz cutoff doesn't seem to a lot of sense for large format. But, that's not to say it's impossible.
It's a 418B or 418-8H. you'll see a few different incarnations in Kustom gear, some painted that color with foilcals that say "made for Kustom by Altec", eventually they just installed the same white framed 418 (actually 421A ferrites in the last days)you'd have bought from your local Altec dealer. I think they(Altecs) actually became optional with CTS drivers being the base models.Quote:

Nope. Kustom Electronics was never in LA. Started in Chanute.
Split into two companies Kustom Signal And Kustom Electronics. Kustom went belly up around when Altec did- musical division bought out by music distributor Davitt-Hanser and moved to Cincy (Hebron,Ky), still there but all rice burner stuff. Kustom Signal is still in Chanute.

That horn AB posted is the Cerwin Vega, fins were deleted on newer models.

NOT at all the same horn. They are all 1 inch screw on. Note 3 screws across the top, 4 on the eBay horn.
CV made a large 1.4 radial for Kustom, EV designed an MF-1012 driver. It was the EV DH 1012 and Altec 906 LATER. Hartley Peavey wanted the 1012. Kustom had enough clout that he couldn't get shipped.

so many 808-driver diaphragms that the Marketing
Manager of Altec refused to supply Peavey with

I looked for other sources and found
that Electro-Voice was about to introduce a new high
power high frequency driver with 3” voice coil called
the DH-1012 … I placed an order for 1,000 of these
drivers at $100 each… After placing the purchase order,
we waited patiently for many months with no “word”
from EV. One afternoon I got a call from an ex-Kustom
salesman named Bob Belfield inquiring about the
possibly of a job. (It is important to know that Kustom
was then the exclusive distributor for EV’s line of SRO
speakers). In any case, Belfield advised me that “EV
would not be honoring our long outstanding purchase
order”…. As I hung up the phone, I wondered if this
“advice” was B.S. or if indeed, Belfield knew something
that I didn’t. I placed a call to Electro-Voice and asked
for, their OEM Marketing Manager. When he got on the
phone, I asked him directly if the info that I heard was
correct…. He stuttered for a moment before advising
me that indeed EV would NOT honor our purchase
order!.."
Closest thing I have ever seen to that is Zomax, not vintage. They made an 811 type horn with 1" 1.4" and 2 inch changeable throat. Also one about halfway between a 311/511. Zomax had split AFAIK Prozomax is out of business the current Zomax does not make it.
If I had to pick another option looks sorta Vitavox, but if so is undocumented, Vitavox did do custom stuff.

That is what is known as a Waffle horn from a Kustom cabinet. I have a few of them myself with original ALtec 418's in the cabs. I also have cabs with the original Altec 421's in other Kustom cabs as well as JBL D-130' and D-140's as well. The cabs with two 418's and a siren horn sound tremendous as PA mains with Peavey 1 18 subs. I also use a pair of old EV TL606 cabs with 421's loaded in them for subs as well. Kustom made great stuff as I have a huge amount of it and it all still works today and sounds better than most of the new stuff made today.

Sorry, but no. The eBay horn absolutely is NOT a Kustom horn. The Kustom horns were all screw on. The eBay horn needs a throat, the Kustom horns were all attached throat.
