Buy em, you will like them!
I'd like to, but the cost of shipping getting out of hand.
Drool!!! I just spent 500 bucks on some Ribbon tweeters.... I bet he want's a whole lot more than the 200 starting bid....strange there's not one bid on them yet though and only 2 days left on the auction.
Rare yes. Valuable? Probably not because no one really knows about them.
I had mine out of the cabs. They are beautiful drivers. And massive!
Wow, 18" woofers...... incredible. How do we make cabinets for them.. and what driver should we match to them?
Those look interesting!!!! how would they sound with 604's in a 3 way configuration? Also can these be reconed by GPA?
GPA builds brand new ones, certainly they can recone older ones.
Even though it's rated as having a response up to 2000 hz---being an 18" woofer, I'd use a 500 hz crossover and possibly an 802-8G h.f. driver with a Mantaray horn (or 511B). You'd have one Kick @ss system IMHO..... Or, if you want a three way system it would work well with a large format Altec h.f. driver (and possibly a 300 hz crossover point with Mantaray horn) and tweeters.... Your choices also depend partly on how much power you plan on putting through the finished speaker system/whether it's for home hi fi or PA use.....

I suggest 3 way 3184-414-902 or 3184-604.
Put both 3184 in a mono sub.
If you want 2 way 511E and 288. Or 311-90, 329 etc. at 500 Hz.
I have them in the factory cabs. Simple bass reflex. The system is called the 8184.
I use them with my model 19's crossed at 70hz. The 19's run full range.
I paid a whopping $350 for them off Ebay, delivered!

That's a sweet deal Ron ! :emot134:
Two things, one is it's down more than it looks at 2K. It will be beaming like crazy. So on axis may be OK, but off axis will be awful. At the risk of oversimplifying, think of the cone diameter ratio to the wavelength being reproduced. The bigger the cone, the shorter wavelength it will beam at. So 12's should cross lower than 8's, 15's lower than 12's, 18's lower than 15's, and God forbid anybody wants to use an EV 30W.
It's no accident tweeters are smaller than woofers.
You might get away with 800, 500 would be better.
Personally, I would do a nice 2 way from 100 up. If I could count on being able to finish it, there's a pair of Bolero's in Columbus CL.

Those cast frame 10's are worth the 80 asking. I have a single 416 that might make a decent sub for them in a low tuned box and just run the Boleros 100 up.

Makes sense, that's why I was recommending a 500 hz crossover (or even a 300 hz crossover point if using a large format h.f. driver). I figured that above 500 hz you'd get much better sound out of a good h.f. compression driver/horn combo--the beaming explanation gives me a better understanding as to why. Do you think a 288 would do a better job with these (for a two way system) than an 802-8G crossed at 500 hz (for home hi-fi)?

I wonder if GPA can build up 3182's?
Those would be my preference in 24 ft3 cabinets tuned for 20hz.
IMHO, the 288 is a better sounding driver. Especially at 500. The 802 has a bit more highs, but I think the 288 sounds better across the range it does. YMMV.
At 500 the ones with the pot casting...288G (old phase plug) and 288H (tangerine) have the advantage due to extra mass.
Tip- Often you can buy 291B (old phase plug) or 291C (tangerine), off the Symbiotik frams, and replace with new GPA cheaper than you can buy G or H model 288.
Makes sense that the larger format driver would be better at the lower frequencies (down to 500 hz) and the smaller 802-8G would be better higher up--like in the Model 19's (with the stock 1200 hz crossover) -- up to 20,000 hz. I've never listened to an 802-8G used with a 500 hz crossover. I have owned 806-8A and 807-8A drivers in (VOTT) P.A. systems with a 500 hz crossover and they sounded great but I'm sure the large format Altec drivers would have sounded better with the 500 hz crossover than those did as well......
Of the two, those are the true subs. But the 3184 ain't too shabby!
They went for $202.25!
What a bargain!
I talked to Bill today. He said the problem with the 3182's is the pole pieces. They have to be specially made. And would be expensive for his machine shop to do them.My buddy owns a machine shop who I spoke to today about, so he is sending me some drawings. If I can have them made to specs we will work out some kind of deal hopefully. I'd like to have a couple pair myself. So we will see...
