Just not the same sonic signature as the original paper hinged phenolic spider versions. Many feel they offer the best midrange reproduction of all the 515's if not all 15 inch speakers, period. Also, they are the only correct bass driver for many of the most collectible original Altec speaker systems.Quote:

I'm impressed that as I research all this, seeing your names come up repeatedly across all these years. You guys have been at this a very long time, and putting up with all the noobs that come and go, asking the same uninformed questions over and over again. The wonderful thing about boards like this and LH and AA is that much of the knowledge is being captured for posterity. I actually feel a loss for Evan (Zilch), despite having never met him. This is a great community.

A lot of us "audio enthusiasts" have seen a lot of loudspeakers come and go over the years. What's amazing is the number of those enthusiasts that can still recall the first time they heard big Altecs. Sure, there are other speakers that some folks will have vivid first memories of. But, across the internet you will find far more people that relate to the experience of hearing their first Altecs more than all other brands combined. It takes a something special to garner a product following like that that spans decades.
I look at it this way- a modern reproduction may be a better piece of furniture, but the funky old antique has way more value on the market...
And when the antique is rare and anything but funky, you got to pay to play......... What are super rare field coil 415s going for these days?

Me too, though until fairly recently could remember pretty much all of it, even the parts covered with a purple haze ;), but the kids I'm around today have a somewhat less flattering definition same as the leading edge baby boomers did with some of our [grand] parent's lingo such as 'terrific', so to keep from always having to explain myself any more than I already have to do with my techno babble, I've pretty much abandoned the lingo of my youth except when 'bench racing' old cars or similar where the youth still seem to embrace/enhance it.Quote:
