I told the seller they weren't Altec cabs, didn't seem to care.
Thanks everyone. The EV connection makes sense considering the first time seller is calling them 'Altec EVT' speakers. I was thinking of bidding on them for the 416-8A's, but I really need a pair of 416-8B's to finish my M19 project. If anyone has a pair of 416-8B's to sell, feel free to message me!
There is no such thing as an "Altec EVT" they are home made boxes with Altec woofs and EV tweets.
Call me confused, but I thought that 416-8A's would have the old style frame. What's the diffence between the 8A's and 8B's with the same late model frame?
Altec never really retired any design they still had re-cone kits and motor parts for regardless of what the catalogs indicated, so AFAIK, only the basket and wider mounting gasket are different. 15", 16" 416-8A Vs an 8B: Attachment 1537

They sure look really good for a DIY effort. Looking at the way the tweeter horn is tacked on and semi crude slot vent, I'm thinking it's factory and was either sold empty or with a bi-flex in it originally.Quote:

It's basic form reminds me of the Heath AS-101. But, i am not suggesting it's a Heath cabinet, i really have no clue.

Yeah, that was my thought too, but Altec got to where they were using whoever would do cabs cheapest, so wondered if they began buying up Heath overstock as The Heathkit store here in Atlanta couldn't hardly give away big speakers and tube based kits by the early '70s.

That number should tell what it is. I had a JPG version of some paper that Altec produced that crossed those numbers over, at one point. I lost it during a computer problem, Though. I think it was something that Bowtie posted.
I looked up the numbers on my 417s, and they're 8Hs just like they should be for the 1221A monitor.
I've also got a 416-8A...... new frame, but old motor cover. It came from Studio 28 in Grand Rapids, when it was shut down.

Anyone know how the 416-8A-16" and 416-8B-16" with the same 23883 cone sound compared to each other? I seem to understand that the 416-8B's 75wpc is rated at double the power capacity of the 416-8A's 21554 30wpc, how also do they compare? It?ll take months to understand the HF drivers lingo. :)
The worst thing is that my 416?s have absolutely no markings on them whatsoever as do the HF drivers on my 32B horns. Kind of frustrating.
Ok, I just checked and my 416 cone says 21184-3, what gives?
Edit; opps, I see that Alien's speaker has the same cone.
21184-x is the cone found in many 416, 515 and 604 models.
Exactly what the -x suffix number relates to I'm not sure.
I haven't seen any other cone number in a 416. The early 803 yes.
I have a 416-8B with cone # 18-03-035400. This is the EV part number given to the 416 8ohm cone supplied by Altec.
If I'm not mistaken, that is the later part number, often a recone part, or 80s part.
I have a pair of speakers like these. Mine came with 416's and ess tweeters. They were sold in kc by audio mart. Don't know where they got the cabs. You could load them with altec ev or gauss woofers and ev or ess tweeters. I payed $200 for mine a year ago off C/L. The 416's are going in my 19 cabs until I can get a pair of b's.
Magnarc, I think you are correct. Whilst EV gave the Altec recone kits an EV part number(Altec R416-8 = EV 85264XX) the components of the kit likely retained their Altec numbers.
