Curious about the lack of frame mounted terminals and a 1/4" push on connector attached directly to a tinsel/litz wire.
Did these use a push on to attach the leads to the terminals?
I'd imagine you'd have to drop the mic pretty hard with a high headroom amp to be able to get the coil all the way out of the gap and jammed up on the pole piece/front plate like that.
I think I see screw marks where a terminal was(center hole). May be a bad recone job?
Perhaps as obvious as the separated glue joint on the spider?Quote:

The spider/damper isn't torn, or grossly out of shape. It doesn't really appear to have put up much struggle at all.
The cone number isn't original so I agree with OG on this faulty recone IME...

:)
After the merging of part numbers to one recone sheet for Altec/EV, part numbers changed...so I am gonna stay neutral on the cone #, but yes Altec would not write on the cone.
FYI Earl,
I had contacted Bill a few months back to inquire about a run of 3182's ... And we got into a chat about his machine shop would want to much money for set up costs for a limited number of drivers (Different top & bottom plate then the 3184)... What Bill and I discussed was about a dozen pair to start with...My buddy has a modern day small Mom & Pop type shop that could have made them much much cheaper..All I needed was the drawings but where we ran into an issue was he didn't have a printer big enough for him to make me a copy as he couldn't send me the original drawings for obvious reasons...We discussed other parts and he mentioned the original cone #'s.He said he would have to use the cones he has for the 3184's .I have to look for them but to my recollection that number on those drivers aren't original.I have it somewhere.Just have to look for it..As we haven't discussed it in months..If i can't find it, I'll inquire with Bill again to see if he can do anything with the drawings and I'll ask him again about the cones...:wink2:
The rubber surround on this eBay speaker is way too big, on the original cones they don't protrude past the cork gasket.. IMHO the extra large rubber surround allowed too much excursion for the spider to handle and the reason for the failure... Just my ?.02

AB, if you can, ask Bill about this. It's my understanding that in general the compliance(surround) should not limit the cone's excursion. Rather, that's one of the prime functions of the spider.Quote:

Actually I think the main function of the spider is to bring the cone back to set position and the surround is what allows it to its excursion limit..Having a larger rubber surround than normal will allow the cone past it's excursion limit pulling the VC out of the gap.I'm not a 100%... You could be right.Bill is the right person to answer this however and i will ask him Monday morning..
No argument here AB, this is totally for the sake of discussion. I'm pretty sure the "main" function of the spider is to keep the coil centered in the gap. However, that is certainly not the spider's only function. I do agree with you that it is also responsible for returning the moving assembly to the "home" position. Consider also that in some cases the spider is also known as the damper.
It will be interesting to hear the engineer's perspective, and i truly appreciate you asking and sharing.
You are correct as well.It does keep the coil centered but it must be able to bring the cone back rapidly..I too am interested in his thoughts on this.Looking forward to it... I have been wondering about the drawing too. :biggrin2:
Bowtie Pm sent..
Talked to Bill and he said the last 5 digits on the 3182 is 24910 so that is the original cone number... So as Earl noted about the white grease pencil this could have been re-coned with an original Altec cone or it was done at the factory...But being this has a rubber surround it is most likely re-coned at some point with the OEM cone IMHO.
@Bowtie ... He also said that both answers are correct the spider is part of the suspension..Keeps the coil centered, but it makes the cone act as a piston both the rubber surround and the spider work in unison like a spring to control a straight up and down movement of the assembly. :wink2:
Many thanks for asking, and posting AB.Quote:

No Problem !
