OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Members
Joe(Geekstar) and John(Altec Best) and the rest of you in the path of this huge mess, Godspeed to you and yours.
I'm 125+ miles inland(as the crow flies) and quite honestly and bluntly we're shittin' bricks in anticipation of what's coming.
Everyone be safe, and don't forget about your pets!
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Yeah, we're worried about the storm here in upstate NY too--I hope those of you closer to the coast like Joe and John batten down the hatches and stay safe.....
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Looks like we'll only get a glancing blow as Sandy goes by...
We've taken our share of licks the last few years with Irene and Isabelle. Hope you all in the NE corridor will be OK.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Hope you all are ok and take all the precautions you can.....GOOD LUCK

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Thank You all ! We are in the path of the eye.I'm only about 40 miles from the coast at it's closest point but 75 miles from Atlantic City which right now is supposed to be land falling point for the eye..
During Irene we lost power for about 16 hours and this is supposed to be a lot worse..PSE&G has already said if you lose power this time it could be 7-10 days before restoration.I've never seen a Hurricane come up the coast and make a 90 degree left turn almost as though it has our name on it... None to happy about it but it is what it is.. If I loose power I won't be able to help folks with their accounts obviously, so please keep that in mind.
And Thanks again everyone and you Tom for starting the thread ! :wink2:

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Come on wind... Do your best. Life is an adventure. I made it through the "Blizzard of 78" and was up hill of the flood through central New England in 1955, which was the last big water event in my area. Army Corp of Engineers built two dams a little more than 5 miles away to prevent similar damage in the future. Vermont & IRC parts of NH got hit badly last year. Tornado last year a few towns away & then in Springfield Ma show we can get hammered in this part of the country too.
The generator is here, and gas for 1/2 day if needed. Plenty of candles & batteries for the radio. Food in the fridge, wood to burn if needed. Only one bottle of Scotch, however & no beer.

Plenty of Whiskey here, but running dangerously low on Congac. :-(

Having lived most of my adult life with hurricane awareness, i'll tell you right up front that this whole scenario has been very spooky.
Meteorologists with no previous precedent to guide them all reaching the same conclusions and generating extremely similar forecast models with no audible/visible conjecture among them? ....... historic first.
Sandy maintained a steady 75mph sustained wind speed for over 72 hours with out so much as 5mph deviation................... historic first.
A tropical system that gets weaker over warm water and stronger over cold water............. historic first.
A tropical system that takes a 90 degree turn westward with the precision of a bus turning at an intersection................ historic first.

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Power out at 3:45. Scotch will be out soon. Only 1/2 hour battery life on the laptop till I fire up the generator. Ah, Adventure...

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Oh man, please you guys take care!
Hoping everyone makes it through this ok... :Cross Fingers:

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Well just lost power about 20 minutes ago after seeing a big blue flash . Wow the wind is really ripping here .I'm posting with my phone so I won't be able to help anyone until power restored.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Hang in there AB.
We're seeing a lot of flickering/dimming, and the wind can be heard almost constantly now.
Been raining(sideways mostly) off and on for a few hours, but we haven't seen anything heavy or torrential, thankfully.
This ride is only just beginning here, and i'll be very glad when it's over.

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
The trees are practically bent over now got a lot of debris hitting the house. I couldn't even begin to imagine a Cat 4 or 5 storm.I'm worried my windows are going to crash in with all the branches hitting them !!! This is a scary storm can't wait to get through it.. No power still. :frown2:
The eye is about 30 miles south of here what's left of the center.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Power is back. For those who got it worse than here, I wish you well.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Good luck east coasters. I'm thinking of you guys and wishing the best from out here in the northern great plains.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Hey AB - did you survive the storm?
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem

Thanks for asking Earl.
Glad to see your post AB, hope things get back to normal for you ASAP.
Apparently i live in a very unique little area. This thing(Sandy) raised it's hackles and roared at us Monday evening, and threatened to be a major conflagration. By about 9pm the wind all but stopped. It was so quiet here at my house that we could hear the wind roaring thru treetops a thousand feet above us a mile or so away.
It seems that the storm/winds approached us from a direction that allowed the Catskill Mountains to effectively cast a shadow of calm over us. Our fire dept was the only dept in the county that didn't receive a single dispatch. Within our township there is hardly a branch out of place. While we saw the lights dim far too many times to count, we never lost power. I can travel about 5 miles in any direction and encounter trees/wires down, and our local power provider warns that some in this area will be several days without power as they're down to skeleton crews here with most being deployed downstate.
In contrast i made a trip down to Newburgh(about halfway to NYC from here) yesterday afternoon to take some bottled water and gasoline to my aunt and her neighbors. Below Wurtsboro Mountain it starts looking pretty devastated. The normally 20-30 minute trip from I-86/rte 17 took the better part of 2 hours and some heavy bullshitting with emergency crews, detour after detour. Seems like everywhere there were two utility poles there was a tree on the wires between them. I cannot imagine what it looks like closer to the city.
On the advice of a good friend with "connections" i started prepping for this thing on wed the 24th since i have a very distinct paranoia about flooding after recent experiences. I no longer "poo poo" storm warnings. Nothing you do in preparation is a "waste". If you're spared an impending disaster, consider your preparations a "working drill".
Godspeed to all those suffering and recovering from this mess.

Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Here, in Rochester New York's suburbs, we were "blown away" by the impact of this storm. We had winds/gusts in excess of 60 mph coming off of Lake Ontario--mixed with torrential downpour it made for a lot of damage in certain areas nearest the lake. People near the lake (especially in low lying areas) were told to evacuate (and many did) due to rising lake levels. I had several friends who had substantial damage to their houses but thankfully other than a couple of huge tree limbs falling in my yard (which both missed my house and cars), my family/home was unscathed. Power was out two blocks from me in one direction, and a half mile away from me in another direction, but we were lucky enough to not lose power here. The city itself was spared much of the damage--it was really bad for those in the suburbs near Lake Ontario. There was a constant loud roar of those high winds here for hours on end as it poured hard and I had a couple of friends (in houses right on the Lake) who's houses shook for hours--both of which lost part of their roof! One of them also had their shed (with lawn mower etc. inside) blow away to God knows where. I hope John and our other members who were even closer to the east coast are faring well in the aftermath.....

well-said.
We dodged the bullet this time - only tree branches down and minor power outage.
But my son lives in Brooklyn, and we've yet to hear from him - with power out there communications are blacked out.
-
Re: OT: Positive Thoughts and Prayers For Our East Coast Mem
Tom & Earl. Thanks guys ! Essentially land line Phones are out and power outages are widespread lots and lots and trees down and damaged homes it could be a while. Can only post from my iPhone ATM . So posts will be limited! I still have no power or heat.
Would like to wish everyone well who have it worse than us. All the best to you and your families.

Sorry VOT that I missed you in my previous post . Glad to hear Hurricane Sandy decided not to take you para-sailing down the St. Lawrence, & over to NewFoundland .
I wonder how Gary L ( Gamalot ) made out through all of this ( it's been almost 4 years ) ?
cheers <> EarlK

So now you Yankee folks have had a good taste of what life is like down here along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Sucks!
I sure hope we don't get any of your crazy blizzards, we couldn't cope.

AFAIK, he's no longer downstate. Last i knew he was in the process of relocating back to his wife's hometown area. Been at least a couple(probably 3+) years since i've been in contact with him. I was in the process of trying to buy some N1201 knobs from him when he just vanished from the interwebs.

I talked to him about 6 months ago. He's not doing too much audio these days he said.

AltecBest: where can one learn what was the actual storm track through New Jersey? Most web reports show coastal damage.

We did OK here in Northwest CT relative to others, just another fine mess.
Lots of unexpected cleanup and repairs over the last several years.
They are calling this the new normal? Where is a stable place to live?

Some truly beautiful country(some pretty decent folks too) in NJ, and a healthy Jersey Shore is a place everybody should visit at least once in their life.
I have a good friend(not Snookie, LOL) that lives in Lakewood, i often kid her that my only complaints are it's too damn hot in the summer, and you guys blew up the Hindenburg.

Greg what your most likely seeing are the national broadcasts..You have to look locally like the Philadelphia TV stations try,
WPVI Philadelphia News, Weather & Traffic | Philly Area News for the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys | 6abc.com
Viewer Images from Sandy | NBC 10 Philadelphia
As for storm track it came on shore around Atlantic City and headed WNW. Google is your friend here...
I took some photos around me and this was a frequent scene on every street we were on.Also took a photo of the front page of a local newspaper of Bull Run road, which is only about a mile and a half from where I live.. The scenes a long the shore are of damage from storm surge (Fast Rising Water) from the ocean.Where I am we received mostly wind damage.
