604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
This is a 604B that purchased about 2 years ago. I've built the Jeff Markwarts 604B crossover and I'm in the process of starting to build some cabinets for this and another 604B that I have. I'm going with the Stonehenge III cabinets.
Question, the HF horn in this speaker is not aligned with the woofer. Is this something that I could fix and/or should fix? The misalignment drives me a little crazy and I'm planning on keeping these speakers for a while.
Here is a picture of the front and back.

Not aligned in which axis?
Maybe the intention is: not concentric?
* Hard to tell with the shadows/lack of precise 'down the barrel' shot, at least for my eyes.
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
That would drive me crazy too! I would just go ahead and redrill the holes where they needed to be to align it correctly. I'm sure it's got to be affecting the stereo image being off like it is. How much, I don't know. That's my 2 cents...
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
Yep, I'd just redrill them too.
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
I would also add a few more bolts there. Hanging a speaker that heavy off of 4 mounting bolts seems risky.

The photos are so dark I couldn't tell much either. I lightened them up with photoshop so everyone can get a much better look at it but from the camera angle it's still hard for me to tell how far it's off. Regardless, even if it's only slightly off, it would seriously bother me as well....

aaahhh. I see now. yikes on the back.
If that's the way it was built, I'd leave it, it they were mine. Unless it's audibly noticable for some reason.
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
I don't think that they were manufactured that way, I think that when the woofer was reconned it was done that way. My guess however is that the entire speaker would have had to been taken apart to offset the speaker that much.
The woofer recone is marked WHF 5309 - any idea who manufactured this?
Luckily the other 604B has the original paper cone.
Thanks
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
The speaker basket has multiple mounting holes, align so the horn is horizontal.
*DON'T RIP THE SPEAKER CONE*

The horn would have to be aligned with the bolt holes in the front picture to be able to just rotate it in the cabinet. It needs specially drilled holes to put the horn horizontal. Also since vott lightened the pictures I can see that this one has the accordion surround where you say the other one has an original cone which has the half roll paper surround. You might want to do an t/s test to see if they both have a close Fs. I'm betting they don't, the original is probably more like 53hz where the accordion is probably closer to 25hz.

Matt,
were you going to use Jim's drawings for the Stonehenge cabinets?
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
Yes using the same drawings for my project. I've already cut the some of the MDF and will start here in the next week or two.
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
Just a thought, but if the other driver still has the original cone, and this one has been reconed (poorly) with an accordion edged cone - from looking at the photos, why not have it reconed with the correct half-roll surround cone, you'll be able to fix the multicell orientation and the two drivers will then be much closer together in measured performance, well at least Fs.. The older style cones are on eBay from time to time, if not maybe GPA could help with a source
Re: 604B - Can I - Should I fix this?
Great idea, I will call Bill on early next week and see what GPA might have in stock.

The guy on ebay only list's them as 515 cones because he kept getting hate mail from 604 owners that thought they knew everything. They are the same cone as the half round surrounds, Although I won't even get close to saying how exactly they are to an original cone, But If I was gonna stick with the B's I'd try to get them both in the same ball park as far as sounding the same otherwise your gonna be all over the place trying to get the right sound from the total system.

Thanks cradeldorf for the link. I looked for 604 paper cones but couldn't find them. Back from traveling and will see what I can get done this week.
