Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
They do NOT sound similar at all. Anything thus said has to be rendered as opinion only. I do not care for Kappa 9's. The guy who wrote that probably likes blondes as much as I like redheads. But sounds like he is being arrogant and proclaiming his opinion as fact. I try hard not to do so.

I didn't know Altec 19's had doors! :Hihee:

( I have never heard of the Infinity Kappa 9 so I have no clue on the comparison). Seems they need a ton of power to operate which would put them at odds with the effecient Altec 19's.
Phrases like "blows the doors off" hold little credibility with me. I'm not an expert, but I'm certain neither come equipped with doors. It makes him sound like a teenager.
Don't believe everything you read on the internet. As a matter of fact, believe very little that you read on the internet.
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
I think it would be hard to blow the doors off the Altec 19's because the Altec 19's doors are made of brick and the Kappa 9's are made of straw ;)
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
The Kappa 9's I heard had no bass response IMO...
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
I had the 7.1s way back, and while I've don't recall hearing the Altec 19s, the 7.1 are not even close to my tweaked out A7s.
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
Looked them up: they are kind of a tower arragement with two 12" woofers,a 5" mid-bass, a 5" mid and 2 EMIT type tweeters. Power requirements are 60-320 watts RMS. Produced in the 1980's. Cost in the range of $1500ea. at that time. Would be interesting to hear them A/B'd with Altec 19's in the same environment. Don't see any way the mids could be on the same level as the Altec's. Did not mean to start anything ugly, it's just that you don't often see a post saying something is better than the 19's. for regular living room use. But as the old saying goes: "One man's ceiling is another man's floor" and so forth.

Remember, there are those who rant about anything. On the Cerwin Vega forum they brag about those...but IMHO overly aggressive and obnoxious speakers. But see, an overly aggressive obnoxious person might like that. Most Klipsch fall in the same category IMHO. And be aware human hearing flattens out at higher power levels, so speakers played loud sound smoother than they really are. They key is those letters. IMHO. If somebody is bragging about a speaker without including that disclaimer, just assume they are an idiot*. You will be right 90% of they time. Note about CV and Klipsch- there ARE good points, and models I might own, But most I wouldn't touch.
* this is based on the theory that 90% of everything is crap, the corollary is 90% of internet posts will be made by people with no clue. Posts without disclaimers are the majority of these. Your mileage may vary.
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
Infinity made speakers that are much better than Kappa's.

........... and i think this may hold true with every Infinity model.
IRS Beta was a damn good speaker, and some of the later RS are even better. But, they are such "current demand" hogs that it is difficult(maybe even wrong) to compare them to Altecs. The Infinities have very specific amplification requirements while Altecs are extremely amplifier friendly and happy on almost anything, and for a lot of folks that is the deal breaker right there.
Just my .02 y'all understand..................

This is the end, my only friend, the end. Sure they got Doors!
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
I've owned both at the same time, and it's like comparing apples and oranges. You see I have this split personality disorder where on one hand I listen to room sized speakers using 5 watt single ended toob amps, and OTOH, I listen to much smaller speakers using amps you can weld with. Anyway, I'm not sure I can easily explain the differences between the current hog Infinitys and the electon sipping Altecs. I also have a pair of Infinity RSIIbs, which to my ear sound better than the K-9s. There is something quite pleasing about EMIMs and EMITs in a nice dipole configuration and enough room to allow them too breathe.
Bottom line though I traded the K-9s not too long ago for a VPI TT, because I found the K-9s bass heavy and muddy compared to the RSIIbs. Now when I'm watching movies, I have the Altecs and the Infinitys all running from the same source, and the sound is quite good...
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
Hmm. Coincidence?
Infinity Kappa 9s Mint - $1800 (Camden DE 19934)
Infinity Kappa 9s Mint
...or perhaps they are just more common than not.
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
Ridiculous at 1800, have seen nice ones at a third of that...
Re: Altec 19's Vs. Kappa 9's
Meh...the going rate is in the $800-$1200 range with a kilobuck being typical. $600 would be a score, and $1800 is stupid money. I traded my pair for a VPI HW-19 Mk II with a bunch of mods and a couple of nice cartridges, total package value in the $1200-$1300 range.
