I would see if you could get permission from GM to build a model similar to Westend's...... If you look at the build, and there is a thread somewhere???? It is very impressive!!!!! I hope someday to hear them....
If the design has been posted on-line and for personal use, then it's available to everybody and since I'm a big fan of MLTLs, a large one of at least Vb = Vas/1.44 and preferably Vb = Vas, Fb = Fs at least 30" wide to allow for plenty of tuning flexibility works for me. Of course if there's not enough room gain, then power handling will suffer in the octave above Fb.

I love bass horns but they are not practical. build a pair of 19 cabs...
GM, I just saw the pictures and the dimensions on a site, and it was a beautiful design... If I was copying a design of someone's, I would certainly want to ask them for permission, out of respect, and as a show of gratitude.... In a situation like this

With no regards to the golden rule, maybe something like;
23.5"x18.5"x46.5" inside dimensions = 11.70 cu. ft minus the volume of the horn if you want to mount it inside the box.
23.5"x18.5"x40.5" inside dimensions = 10.19 cu. ft if you wanted to put the horn on top of the box.
I think that the front and back panels should use a 1/4" dado into the sides, top, and bottom panels as well as all of those panels to each other.

416-8B(or 16B) is the only 416 i'd embark on a "hifi" project with. Best i've heard one sound is in an Onken type enclosure. Fella was running TAD 4001's on HUGE Edgar(or similar, they might have been avant guarde) salad bowls on top, active filtering, Pass F5 powering the horns Conrad Johnson mosfet on the woofers, probably the best i've heard a 2-way system sound despite the fairly beamy salad bowls, pretty heavenly in the sweet spot. I'd like to hear the same system with proper 288's and 1505's on top. When life settles down for me a bit, duplicating this system may become a serious goal, to me it's that good.

Thanks VOTT. They were done here in town at Vancouver Audio Speaker Clinic. The cones remained original. I asked them to pull the dust caps, clean the gaps the best they could [yes, I know], realign one of the coils, clean the surrounds and add some new goop. Once home I gave them some TLC to tidy them up a bit.
Glad to hear you were able to keep the original cones--looks like they did some nice work on the "spruce up". The only place I would trust for a full re-cone for my vintage Altecs (if they ever need it) is GPA. BTW, maybe I lightened your photo too much! Is this better?Quote:

I know a couple fellas "in the business" in that corner of the world, Vancouver Audio is a long and well trusted speaker repair center. They likely source their Altec related parts from GPA, or from the same source GPA does depending on the part, and their work is absolutely on par with GPA's. I've owned some of their work in the past, and if i lived west of the Rockies they'd pretty much be my exclusive speaker repair folks. East of the Rockies GPA is a no-brainer for Altec and Gauss rebuilds, even used to be able to talk them into some Emilar cone repairs a few years back.Quote:

They've always been good to me and yes I believe you are right about their quality and them sourcing the right parts.
I am now turning my thinking toward a modified Stanley screamer. The 416's with 604-8H's. Now back to the choice of cabinet...

I have some thumper Selenium woofers I could use. Two of them and a 604? XO at about 100Hz 24dB?
Cal, I bet if you ask real nice and GM is interested in finding a solution, maybe he'd model a TL or MLTL for your 416's. I have no experience with that woofer so can't say if it's good bad, or ugly but it's an Altec of 15" so it has to be fairly good.Quote:
