New member Bobabode-Greetings all!

Hello all! New (to me) Altec 604E owner here.

While I was poking around in a clients attic I came across a pair of speakers sitting on joists facing into the vaulted ceilinged family room. The longtime client wants the holes filled in and when I expressed some interest she told me to take whatever I wanted. To my amazement I found a pair of 604E duplex drivers with the N1500a crossovers in bare particle board cabinets. I've removed the drivers and rear panels and will be rescuing the rest of the cabinets.

ps Thanks Kyle and others over at Audiokarma for recommending this board and I hope that I have something to contribute other than a cool story about saving a pair of Altec speakers from oblivion, sealed up in an attic.

Welcome Bob ! And Congrats on getting a pair of 604's for free ..:eek2: You lucky dog you ! There are lots of 604 threads here to help you get them up to par.. If they have been sitting awhile you may have to do a little work but from the pics they look pristine..

If they have been facing down for years, the weight of the cone may cause suspension to fatigue. Not a super expensive fix.

That's a problem I had with a couple pair of 416B's.. If this is the case then a recone will be needed (Spider failed on Mine,all 4 needed new Spiders).. About $120 per speaker for re-coning + shipping.

From what I understand, they have been in the proper vertical position facing out through a vertical wall in a high vaulted ceiling, untouched for all of these years.

Free is a very good price and you got fingerprints on one of the cones!

Hopefully, they're just in the dust, and a soft clean paint brush will remove the rest of it.

For cabs, you can also do a search for 620A cabs, some have had MLTL's built for them, open baffles, etc...

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes and congrats. The more I search and read about these speakers? I find I'm getting the itch to build some fine cabinets for them. (Pun intended, I crawled around in an attic filled with fiberglass to rescue them.) The fingerprints are only in the accumulated dust of fifty years, so no harm done to the original cones. I did check them with a meter and one measured 10.3 LF and 8.2HF the other measured 10.8 and 8.5 so nothing is shorted. I'll start another thread regarding asking for cabinet recommendations. Hi Bob ! The cab on the right is the Stonehenge III it has the 604-8G in it..The Stonehenge V is the same cabinet but came with the 604-8H instead, updated. Jeff Markwart has the cabinet plans on his site. Todd has the same plans with a few minor Mods..He changed the port to horizontal and raised the driver opening up a little higher.. Which I have somewhere if you want to go that route will look for it.

BTW- Bob one concern I would have is, if they were stored in an attic ? Attic's tend to have huge temperature variations (Summer - Winter) if they are unfinished..The biggest concern is heat.. If they been in a real hot attic for 50 years chances are the cones could be dry rotted and could come apart.. With a little inspection you should be able to tell though if they are in good shape.

Fire em up! Play some music through them. Then you will know.
