I hate trying to get my ride cymbal close enough to me without getting the floor tom legs and ride stand legs all tangled up. It's like trying to figure out a damn jigsaw puzzle. I also hate crappy, unbalanced sticks (ie-steve smith model.) Another one is playing on a poor sounding instrument, god that sucks.
NIKK! LMFAO! That ride stand/FT legs sh** - U NAILED IT!
...Just to make matters even MORE interestg, I have a 6x6' rollable riser on which to fit it all [AWA MY phat azz] - that sh** is TOO DA** FUNNY...
NTM gettin the ride close enough to ya w/out interfering w going to the FT itself....

1. I hate putting a dent in a brand new head.
2. I hate false triggers on digital kits.
3. I hate when clamps on the digital kit become loose.
4. I hate hitting my hat, when I wear one, with a stick, while I play.

I've administered a bleeding fat lip to myself with a stick. Almost put out an eye too. Solution: I wear a football helmet now when I play.
A spark as big as a postage stamp once joined my lip to the wire sphere of a microphone. Solution: a foam mike cover.
Watch where the legs of your throne are positioned on the stage: I've fallen off the back of a drum riser. Solution: I set up center stage and the singer can stand in the back.

Those were good.

I hate hit my finger in winter when hands are cold.
I hate playing a snare with a loosy and unsettable timbre.
I hate playing on a movy barge.
I do hate forget my HH tilters for a gig...
However I'm still drumming !!!
1. I hate bad stage monitors (sound).
2. HUGE stages - Played on several were my bass player was 20 feet away. Hello..ello..llo.lo?
3.When my thumb is cold and numb. Have to use between the index and middle finger till the feeling gets back.
4.When the sound man thinks it's cool to put delay on my bass players mix in the monitors....ever try playing with that?..It's like no matter how much faster you play...you can't catch up....lol
5. When I ask for all blue M&M's and they get me green, yellow & red...man, I hate that.
"I hate false triggers on digital kits"...u got it...AWA mis-triggers [no single note coming thru at all]
5, that is some funny freekin sh**, as usual...
& what's even more funny is that i can totally relate to the bloody nose/lip thing...did that a coupla times during a 3 & 1/2 yr rock gig stint back in the early 90's...
Also, have sandwiched my fingertip/knuckle between the stick & the snare backbeat a coupla times in my day; AWA betw the stick & crash cym
1 time, on a REALLY small stage, the bandleader [a real egoed pr**k] wanted the light cans to hang down behind me [as if the stage wasnt small enough], & I badly burnt the back of my L [snare] arm bumping up against 1 of em [I had argued w him about how f'n stupid the idea was because the stage was so small we had to put the keybrdst on the floor next to it]; he's lucky he was able to walk outta there that night to live to see another gig date]
Another 1 u guys nailed - your fingers on outdoor gigs on a cold day/night
& don't 4get THE BIGGEST 1 - gettin stiffed for the amt of $$ that was agreed upon when u r fairly new to the game or just starting out [aka "green"]
Oh, & BTW; 5...I now give the sangers the option to stand on or next to the light cans/rig, or in the bathroom/port-o-let w a wireless....

I sympathize, Flamaque, about big stages. How about counting the whole gig because you can't hear ANYTHING because of a non-existent monitor mix?
Horsewhipping a soundman should be legal.
Fortunately whenever I've had the luxury/fortune of playing very large stages [every now & then], the sound team have been exemplary...i.e., they put 1 to 2 stax on either side of u the size of a small PA , so that u don't have to experience "large stage wash/verb/delay/echo...o...o...o...
"Delay in the MONITOR MIX?!!"
Fire that "sound" guy - he's either:
A] a complete eedeeyut/maroon [aka "moron"], or
B] he's messin' with u, "bad" ;=) ....
..."Horsewhipping a soundman should be legal."
...'Roun' 'nese parts we jes have Rosie O'Donnell bus' a cap in 'dere aspirations ...[& then have Tom Selleck & Chuck Heston bus' some caps in hers]

Busting the bass drum head during a tune - that's got to be the ultimate show stopper!
Band leaders who don't know what they want!
"Put a beat to this." "Play like a loop." ARGH!!!!!
Band leaders who think that they can show you what they want.
"Here, can I show you!" Hows about NO!!!
My left hand continually peeves me!
Plexiglass! Satanic plot to keep drummers dowm!
Thinking Dave Weckl is the only great drummer, then hearing Vinnie and so on and so on!
Meesing up on the last song of the night and not getting redemption for two weeks!
Too many songs in odd time signatures in one set!
1. Playing a small stage and your ride cymbal stand keeps falling off.
2. Buying a double-pedal only to realize your hats are in the way and to play comfortably.
3. Drums that sound lousy! Toms that are too thin and a snare that sounds like the junior high marching snare with NO personality.
4. A band leader who doesn't know how to end a tune. "Hey duuude...remember, I'm the time keeper! Look at ME and I'll lead the way."
5. A band leader who starts a tune at the wrong tempo...again, look at me!
6. A lead guitarist who goes into another song rather than ending...LIVE (thanks for the head's up)
7. Shopping for gear at the Guitar Center in Van Nuys, California. Brain dead staff..."Hey bro, how long you been working here?" "Wow...ah...two weeks. I just drove in from Alabama."
8. Guys who show up late or can't commit to a schedule or routine. "Yeah, you got talent, but unless we practice we ain't gonna gig!"
9. Guy who come unprepared to play covers. "How does that Brian Adams tune go again?" "Yo broski...you tell me, you're playing the intro..."
10. Playing products that aren't name brands, but just feel so good--stuff someone gives you because they know you're a drummer, like brandless sticks that should suck, but because you have no expectation, you play them and then get use to them.
1. dropping my tuning key or a cymbal stand screw. (just dissappears... lost forever!)
2. untightening a stand that's been tightened by hulk hogan.
3. getting a splinter while switching stick position for rim clicks.
4. tom dampener rings.
5. bottom headless drums.
6. guitarists who continue to solo after you've finished riding on the china. the intensity doesn't go much farther after you've gone to the china. c'mon!
7. max weinberg's sub
8. steve smith being compared to vinnie.
9. vinn(y) colaiuta
10. idear
max weinberg's sub is cool!
The number one is definitely
soundmen/women.

A singer who thinks she's a bandleader.
The joke about a drummer not being a musician.
Fact: a singer who can't play an instrument is not a musician, male or female!
1. unscrewing the cymbal nuts and they fall on the floor....u then have to get on ur hands and knees and look for it....banging ur head on the way up.
2. dropping my drum key.
3. getting ur hand caught in the legs of stands when trying to undo them.
pain!
4.packing the hardware case perfectly, doing it up, and then realising uve forgotten to pack the stool
5. guys slagging off, or dissing dave weckl for no apparant reason except for the fact that they know they cant play that stuff!
1. Starting off a song and having multiple members of the band try and tell you where their idea of the tempo of the song should be...all at the same time.
2. The leader of the band telling you what the tempo of a cover song is when you know it is way too slow (white guys trying to be groovy by playing the song so slow that there is no way to make it groove). If it was a hit at the original tempo, why change a good thing?!
3. Having the leader of the band at practice get a phone call about that weekend's gig, and hear him tell the person to come to another night's gig, because it will sound better (the night you're not playing). WTF?
These three were all from the same band. I no longer play with them. That whole experience F'ed up my groove for weeks by causing me to seriously doubt my playing. They can burn in Hell for all I care! (Sorry for the rant, had to get it out!)
4. Musicians who show up late and haven't worked on the parts they were supposed to work on.
5. Guitar players who invade the space of your drum rug by trying to lean their guitar amps on your cymbal stands or kick drum. Get that shiznit off my gear!!
6. Musicians who think it is cool when a drummer is playing so hard that they break cymbals and sticks. I've broken sticks and have no problem with that, but cymbals are expensive. I do play hard but haven't broken a cymbal in years!
choking the cymbal after a 2-hour Brasso-with-lint-free-rags-and-toothbrush-for-the-grooves polishing job...
choking the cymbal after a 2-hour Brasso-with-lint-free-rags-and-toothbrush-for-the-grooves polishing job...
The delay problem was resolved when my shoe flew across the stage and smacked the monitor man in the side of the head....lol
Here's two more.....
1. Having the bass player give you one tempo and then while clicking the tempo to start the song, the singer turns around and gives you another...AT TWICE THE SPEED!
2. Having to share a kit on a gig...you use their kit and the bass drum pedal feels like it would take THE HULK to play it.
1. Stupid producers. " Play bum te shot" Are you trying to verbalize drums.... Badly and your not a musician.
2. Accidentaly popping yourself in the knuckle with the sticks.
3. Salesman at music stores who don't know dick and then try convince you that yamaha stage custom is made out of maple......
4. Having to lose track of the girl you just had a great conversation with cuz you have to play the next set...... She leaves and you didn't get the number.
5. Finding out just before the set starts that your hardware is missing a nut, washer, tension rod etc... and there is no time to fix it....
_Anyone who is extremist hardcore about ONE particular style of music [usually THEIR preferred style, of course] to the exclusion of all others...for ex.: the "Jazz SS/Police; "Rockheads;" "Pop Johnny/Janey's;" "Bubble-Gummers"...u know, the ones that rag ALL DAY LONG about "the other 'inferior' style[s]" & talk incessantly about the superiority of THEIR style...or about how "jazz is lame/no balls"...or how "so & so" can't really swing...LAME...& BEAT [as in, "dead horse"]...then u play them back the rehearsal tape & point out all those little notes of theirs that didn't cut it in the swing or "pocket" ;=) ...
_Rickety, wobbly stages or risers - u know, where all your schtuff's movin' around [like that tom/ride/crash] while youre tryin' to play it...
_Losing that new easy-torque drum key [& having to use that "beat-up threaded" old spare one that you'll NEVER lose]...
_"NICKING" or GOUGING YOUR DRUM SHELL FINISH ...
Ah yes, dropping the proverbial cym stand wingnut down in that sea of pedals/stand/throne & tom legs...u whip outcher lil flashlight but STILL can't find it...only to finally find it at the end of the night after u COMPLETELY tear down, & it's like, "Hey - i just KNOW that i looked in that spot!" or, u find it 1/2way across the stage or room...[Murphy's Law - something will NEVER land in the direction that it appears to be falling]...IF u find it AT ALL...
Louie & Uno- LOL [Uno: that qualifies for a

Singers who come in at the wrong point - too late, too early ... too annoying.
A trombone player who recently questioned me in front of an entire big band about my reading... "No wonder it sounds so loud - he's playing a bunch of stuff that isnt even here" ... like set ups for your brass figures you IMBECILE!
People hitting cymbals with anything - harmonicas, guitar headstocks or ANYTHING that isn't MY stick in MY hand.
How about I hit your Les Paul with my boom stand?
Solution to ALL the above? Dr Dave prescribes a 2B in the face- works every time
Their face that is... not your own... that would be silly :-p
DF - those were great - esp "he's playing a bunch of stuff that isnt even here" ... like set ups for your brass figures you IMBECILE! - LOL
...[Yeah - just give that gtrst some METAL stix to play their gtr strings with [in wintertime ]...their playing might just cause "sparks to fly"...
..._that butt-wad that always grabs your cowbell & sticks to play it during any given tune at any given time to show every1 that he/she's "quite the multi-instrumentalist" [pounding out 1/4's on it]...
_Certain peeps who ask to sit in:
"I've always wanted to be on stage"...
"I've always wanted to be a drummer"...
"I was a drummer in High school jazz/stage band"...
"I play a little bit" [just started 2 months ago, playing along to Britny & *simple pop/rock/eMpTyV band here*]...
"My cousin's grandfather's uncle's brother's girlfriend's boyfriend's girlfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's friend was a musician"...
"I toured with Aerosmith & AC/DC once" [actually had a girl once tell me this at a rock club gig I had ...
"I met Peter Criss once"...
"Hi, I'm Rikki Rokkett; can i sit in?"

That's THE girl, Fuse! Does she make it to your gigs too? I thought she got around (help me Rhonda, help help me Rhonda Round-Heels!)
How about egomaniacs? That doesn't necessarily mean someone who brags on himself. Someone who keeps everyone waiting because he's running late, couldn't find his cord or is typically needing a ride is practicing a form of egomania too. To align yourself with such a loser is a recipe for your own failure.
Unfortunately I speak from experience and a lot of these pet peeves mentioned here reminded me of someone. This guitarist always needed chauffeuring to and from practice and gigs, would repeatedly ignore half a dozen figures I'd play to set him up to come into certain tunes (not unlike your trombonist, Dr. D.) He'd dance around waving his arms like he was conducting His Band, was always full of shit, Xanax, Crown Royal, beer ("I really can't play till I have a good buzz") and enough doobage to keep Harlem on the nod for a week. He liked to hit my cymbals with his hands and the headstock of his Fender. It was okay for him to make a mistake but not for you to make one; he was the master of the dirty look. He was a gifted player but only the first fifteen minutes of the night. Early on in his 'career' he discovered bands would put up with that kind of behavior and, not surprisingly, surrounded himself with sycophants telling him how great he was. Years ago the pros in town twigged to this real quick and have nothing to do with him; amateurs thought they'd found a superstar on whose coattails they'd ride to stardom.
Note I speak of him in past tense.

All of these are pet peeves of a younger, lighter, unwise drummer. Some you may relate to, some are painfully all my own:
1) Warped sticks <s>old Zildjian sticks</s>
2) Extremely cheap drum thrones that WILL impale
you. (Cheap upholstered plywood w/pencil thin
pot metal seat post)
3) Guitarist's drunken brother and/or friend
who serves no useful purpose sleeping or
puking in your house during practice
sessions.
4) Guitarists who on the first night of a jam
session, delay things a couple hours because
their bong pipe is involved in a series of
small fires.
5) When I hear, "But man, Skynyrd rocks!!!"

yes (1) unbalanced sticks...add all the vater Fusion sticks & some of the VC Sticks.
(2) musicians / drunks that knock into your cymbal stands & send them flying towards you while all 4 limbs are occupied. add windy to that list too (playing outside on s. beach)
(3) bugs while you are playing on outside gigs...although i have a witness that can confirm i NAILED a fly with a stick on the hi-hat while playing one time.
(4) looking over & realizing your hi-hat clutch has let go...and you are playing jazz.
(5) getting to the gig & you have somehow misplaced or forgotten "x"...could be a pedal or sticks...ugh. i think i do like 2-3 dummy checks now after this happenings a few times.
(6) getting gear stolen...stuff that only a drummer would take...a practice pad ?
palmerlouie,
When I drop a cymbal nut on the floor.
I make myself do 10 push-ups.
It reminds me not to do it again.
Which by the way, it does....lol
How about assholes who spin one of your cymbals like it's a roulette wheel?
Regardless of how small a stage is I also don't like another player standing directly in front of me where I can't see the audience. I need some of that energy from the crowd too!
I FREAKIN' HATE when a sound guy puts a bass drum mike in my bass drum hole then trips over it and puts a big rip in the front head. Then just says, "Ooops, sorry about that."
Happened 3 different times.
Fun!,
-when bandleaders cannot communicate or express what they need out of you.
-engineers that pride themselves on their sampling skills.(which means they dont know how to properly mic' a kit)
-engineers with too much/many: gate rack efx, duct tape(well u can never have enuff), pro tools books and manuals very very near their board(BAD SIGN!), stories about 'shoulda been, coulda been, used 2 be', mic stands but not enuff mics .
-ill paraphrase the last 2 points=AMATURE AUDIO ENGINEERS THAT KNOW SWEET F.A. ABOUT DRUMSET!.
-soundmen with attitude.
-warm-up acts that assume that they can use your hand-crafted drums for their opening set.(that make sense??)
-people handling my dbl.kick pedal by holding only the connecting rod.
-bandmates that still havent figured this out>LET THE DRUMMER SET UP FIRST ON STAGE!!!!!!!.
-being rushed for teardown/setup.
-baaaddd monitors.
-baaaddd headphone mixes.
-crosstalk with electronics.
-bandmates that claim that u sped up or(insert mindless criticism that makes absolutely no sense).I wisened up over the years and i ALWAYS tape shows.Suffice to say, string players are clueless.
-that strange live show phenomena:u play a show, and u felt that u played not so good.U review tape and talk to trusted eyes/ears and realize that it sounded exemplary(sic). Conversely u think u ruled the universe at your show, only to find that u sucked donkey ass.
-warped sticks,or sticks with lame grain sanding.
-freezing cold weather and touring.
-sweltering hot weather and touring.
-i hate it it when people think that because im a drummer; that i'm either: stupid, wild and crazy all the time, not educated('oh u graduated high school!!??; u attended the Royal Conservatory!!??), wasted or know how to hook peeps up with illicit substances, or unsophisticated with my taste in music.
-For anyone that has tattoos: dumb ass tattoo questions
-girlfriends/wives that dont seem 2 quite 'get it' with our love of music.
-warming up for a 'name' act and they are nothing but petulant assholes, crew included.
-the fact i cant afford a tech to help me out from time to time.
-people that cant program a decent drum machine pattern.
-that odd drumhead that was badly manufactured, and said head is fucking up your set.
yeesh i could go on............all my best.........beats........
"that strange live show phenomena:u play a show, and u felt that u played not so good.U review tape and talk to trusted eyes/ears and realize that it sounded exemplary(sic). Conversely u think u ruled the universe at your show, only to find that u sucked donkey ass."
Classic! Same with practice sessions.
