I bought a beat up pair of one of the big multi-driver EPI models. It had the older version of the tweeters in it. It's my understanding that EPI/Epicure is supposed to be well regarded. I thought the execution was cheaply done, However. The wiring was atrocious, and there were no t-nuts, just wood screws into MDF/particle-board, and I don't recall what else. I parted them out, but I threw a lot away, because it was garbage...... several of the woofers had shifted magnets or something that prevented the suspension from working.....could have been glue, I recall several drivers having glue all over. From what I saw I wouldn't bother with them again, no matter what they're supposed to sound like.Quote:

Those EPI inverse dome tweeters sounded amazing.
Depends on the sensitivity. As long as they're more sensitive than the 755's byt at least a couple db, they should work well.Quote:

well guess i'll find out what they'll do. i remember they were nice at low volume. they should just fill in some of the upper range.
i opted out of the red ring pair because the dome on one of them appears to have a funny looking spot in it. found these instead.

That's a nice early one too! Note that it is missing the little round yellow "supertuner" logo that would be found on the tape door of the later models. Somewhere around here i have the 8-track version of that deck, the TP-900.:oQuote:

I have 1 8-track tape, Best of Jim Nabors. I consider it a complete experience, leaving me with no desire for 8-tracks or anything even remotely related to them.:DQuote:

Are you talking about the little multi-cells? I have a pair that I pulled from a pair of CS-88a, that had been damaged. I haven't used them for anything, but I keep them becasue they remind me of Altec multicells, but mini-sized.Quote:

They were not as airy as the ALTEC 3000s but they were not bad at all.
The same tweets come with Calrad, Monarch, and Olson labels I think.
Do a google search and image search on Pioneer PT-2, PT-3, PT-6, etc
There were lots of versions and variants, round square, cells, no cells...some of which showed up in later Pioneer multi way box speakers. I can't claim to be a Pioneer expert but there are some specialists out there. Bowtie427 probably remembers every model number.
The early Pioneer stuff I've run across is usually quite decent and had some engineering and craftsmanship behind it.

Pretty sure those were actually made by Coral.
Coral H-1, H-2, or H-3 w/ 1 inch aluminum dome, edgewound aluminum ribbon VC.
I run a pair of H-1 with these Oaktron 12 inch extended range bastardized into a pair if Aztec Gauguin III cabinets, someday i'll finish them properly, grills and all and add just a tad of pad on the tweeters................... they're worthy.

Hard to say who made what. Here's a pic of PT-2s (with insane price tag) that have "Pioneer" molded into the horn.

I believe you are correct about some of the re-brand Olsons. etc being made by Coral, though, now that I think about it...but some were definitely Pioneer.
The situation reminds me of the 50s-60s Jensen look-alikes from Magnavox, Wilder, etc. Seems a lot of parts were coming from jobber catalogs or one OEM was happily selling to the other. Why reinvent the wheel?
From my experience, much of this older JA stuff is worth a shot at the right price....better than the overrated and overpriced EV and Jensens consumer tweets to be sure. if I never hear another one of those scratchy EV T-35s, that's cool with me!

well I got the EPIs today. after only a week and a half. :D first thing, one mailman comes up and hands me a box. I went inside to open it and heard it rattling. turns out it was some kind of diet pills for someone 2 streets over. so I walked them over and gave them to the lady who ordered them. (she needs them) I was walking back and went inside and saw another mailman dropping off some packages across the street. as I walked out the door he saw me coming and started waving another package at me. it was the EPIs finally.
anyway, boy are those things hot. I tried the caps that came with the boxes first. 1.1uf very quiet. next I tried 10uf like they should come with. starts around 1800 hz. way too much. they drowned out the 755s. finally settled into 4.7ufs from the tandy corporation. it sounds pretty good now. but I want to try 2.2ufs. or maybe just pot them down a bit. I do like the ting and sparkle. :)
"Too much of a good thing" as my mother always said. Everything in moderation.
Adding high-highs should be like adding salt to the gumbo. It should enhance the flavor, but you don't want it to taste salty. Potting them would be a good idea. I find what I think I like at first, ends up grating after a while. Ease of modification is a good thing.

nice part is I can always take them off and go back to square one. they sounded great before. as far as back porches go. :) but I think once I can pare it down to an extension of the voice that's there. I'll be happier. some parts of the sound the EPI does better, so I just need to bring it in at a freq where it sounds best. and then attenuate it till it sounds like one speaker.
