Sounds like one killer dvd...the "latinesque" trades that you referred to MIGHT be Michael Sembello's The Bridge [w Paulinho de Costa], or something he might've done with Alejandro Sanz, maybe? He's worked with several other "latinesque" artists as well....

yeah Dr. Funkenstein is the Ebay guy. I'm curious to know what you all think about the idea of selling bootlegs. (I'm against, he obviously is selling a LOT of the discs. just look at his feedback)

While I'm against the idea of people making money off of bootlegged videos, I guess I'm "for" them - at least they're letting people have them. The only other experiences I've ever had with bootlegged videos/music is with the people who only trade. Well, the thing that sucks about trading is what if I don't have anything they don't have (or at all)? This has been the case many times for me, so my only option IS to buy from the boot sellers.
Honestly, I don't know why people don't just rip the stuff and host it online somewhere (or send it online, etc). There's this great new system for movies, games, music, etc called Bit Torrent. Basically, you upload the torrent to a site and people are able to download pieces of it from each other - it's really easy since there is a program that does all the tricky stuff for you after you click the link. Anyway, I think I've gone off on a tangent =P

Personally I am against selling of bootlegs, but I met Matt this summer in Orlando courtesy of Roy Cameron and he's a nice guy. But, for some guys sometimes it's the only way to obtain this stuff for they don't have anything to trade.
I think I'm right in saying that this Dr. Funkenstien posted on this board for a while?
As for bootleg gigs, IMO the majority of artists/musicians that have bootleg gigs floating about have made absolute fortunes out of singing/playing/sessions etc. So what if a relativly few copies of a disc or concert get out? We ALL pirate in some way or form - just look at this message board and the exchanging mp3's and bootleg vids that are flying around. It's not as if we don't go out and spend our hard earned money on CD's is it?

I haven't posted to this board for some time now - I changed jobs, and therefore email addresses, but I check the board over breakfast every day(how sad am I?)Now I got round to registering again, I just had to share with you all about a fantastic dvd I got for my birthday(just gone - how regularly and quickly they appear these days). My eldest son, who's always mocked my obsession with drums, drumming, Buddy Rich, Level 42, Sting and now Vinnie really surprised me with an 'unofficial' dvd compilation that he sourced form someone in the States.The DVD is professionally edited, with a warning about the quality of some of the footage, and a disclaimer about it being historically significant ! I might not have the full list here, but it's got the Zappa stuff ( how did Vinnie play when he sat so ridiculously low!!???); the early 80s Japanese clinic;Pasic 88; Zildjian Day in Scotland from '94;a clip from the '97 Songs & Visions concert(thanks Roy (Cameron) for the full VHS of this amazing show); a clip of Seven days with Sting from the Summoner's Travels tape;an unidentified clip from a latin flavoured show, where he's trading 4s with a percussionist(anyone any ideas?), and some amazing footage from the Baked Potato, shot from about 6 feet awat from Vinnie's crash cymbal. This is the same night from which Steve's posted some clips, but to watch Vinnie sit there, think about playing, gently slip into the groove with some oh-so-tasty hi-hat work, and then lay into his kit.....we all know what I'm talking about! Any way - he got the DVD from someone called Dr Funkenstein, or Mr Funkenstein, and said he had loads of stuff listed on his site. Anybody know anything?
Also - isn't it just great to see and hear Vinnie on the road again with Sting?, and doesn't he just give Sting's new material the kick start it needs - to hear the Vinnification of this quite insipid material?
In closing, 'cause I've got to go home now -
can I quote, verbatim, from the recent Men's Journal article( about a trip to Nepal) written by Sting:
"..a packed, smoky club, and the band doesn't sound half bad.Any band is only as good as its drummer, and this one is surprisingly good. In the bio I pick up from the table, he lists Vinnie Colaiuta, my erstwhile trapsman, as his main influence. I am duly impressed" - not impressed enough to secure Vinnie for the full tour though?
I agree with Dazzler....I spend a fortune on official CDs, DVDs etc, but I think we all know and appreciate the thrill of hearing some live stuff that wasn't intended for general release. In Vinnie's case, we would all buy an official DVD/video in our 1,000s - but until he has a real change of heart, we have to take our live Vinnie as and when we can - and if it means somebody making a few $$$ or ???s, so be it. I, for one, would offer free copies of the DVD to HOD members only - I do know from personal experience that not everybody has stuff to trade, and that you have to start somewhere if you want to collect rare stuff - except I don't yet have access to a DVD burner!Once I do, I'll post the offer again - I really think that as many people as possible should be able to see this incredible man in action -some of the clips on the DVD were, to me, the stuff of legend! Remember - we across the pond aren't as lucky as you guys in the States as far as opportunities to see Vinnie, and the others, live and up close.
I'm not against selling bootlegs at all, assuming that the footage is not available anywhere else. For instance, if Chick Corea is too dense to release the Blue Note Tokyo, and if somebody wants to make a few bucks selling it, why not? He's not taking money out of anyone else's pocket, because no one else is selling it.
I've been wanting to make DVDs out of Journey's Frontiers and Beyond for a while. If I do, you bet your ass they'll show up on ebay.
Journey beat ya there T-bo, Frontiers and Beyond was released by the band earlier this year on DVD.
I don't know.. it just doesn't sit well with me. I hear what you're saying though about footage being unavailable and it's not like I think it's wrong to buy it but selling it.. I just don't know.
How much would you pay for that Karizma vid? I'm sure someone could sell that whole thing on DVD for $50 a pop. I'd pay it.. but it just seems wrong to make that kind of money off of someone else's work. Giving it away or trading for some reason seems different but maybe it's just my twisted morals at work. I wouldn't have a problem buying a Bootleg DVD(in this case for Karizma), depending on the situation.
Like Manos mentioned if the guy just pulled the footage from the net and just burned it into a DVD without making a decent product(the package itself, the features, the table of contents or whatever, editing sum parts), then I don't see the point in wasting my hard earned cash for a lazy bastard who didn't sacrifice his time to actually make a QUALITY PRODUCT.
I wished I had the resources, the knowledge and experitese to contribute to this board like Steve, Bernand, Peter and others do, but alas i'm kinda stupid when it comes to computers + I don't have any webspace of my own.

video's! Now I just trade for new stuff from what I have when I can, as I don't like 'ripping off' the artists involved, but how else are we(the excited drummer's of the world)going to find new
vid's of our fave drummer's in action?
So I buy ONLY when I cannot trade, but usually find I can trade for almost anything I need, as I get some great stuff by being here in the States with all the people whom tape these shows, Planet X-Vinnie(in many different bands)Banned From Utopia lead by Chad wackerman a fine drummer who leads 8 ex FZ bandmates in new & orig. FZ tunes, &
many other great bands!
So lets just all put our stuff together & trade!
