I picked this up at an estate sale. It has a 604-D in it. Aside from some small scratches in the side it appears to be excellent. I know it sounds fantastic. I don't know if I should try to dismount the driver for inspection because I am afraid of tearing the gasket. Can anyone tell me what it's really worth?Attachment 2146

As a general rule, mainstream consumer Altecs in good enough condition to only need new XO caps are worth its component inflation adjusted sum total or ~$2500 today, though this relatively rare one is probably potentially worth twice this to a collector. Personally, at either price I'd rather have a new GPA 604 III in a new custom made cab.
To remove the driver, lay the speaker face down, remove the driver mounting screws, wiring and use either a very thin putty knife, nylon fishing line, picture hanging wire or similar to slowly pry/'slice' the driver loose if it doesn't easily lift away initially.

It looks to be in nice shape.. Too bad there aren't 2 of them.. Then they would be worth a lot more.

Wow! Jeez I didn't think it was worth that much. I saw the one like it on Ebay but thought somebody was just going for broke. I see the drivers go for good money too but I would hate to split it up if a collector would want it
I also got what I think is a 606 cabinet with a 604-C driver in it. The cabinet is pretty nice but has a few nicks in the front. That one works great too. Not sure how to add a picture of that in this thread. Maybe the Altec 339B amp I got is worth more than I thought. It works but one input has a hum and one output channel must need a new tube or something. It fades out after a bit. The guy that had these must have been a pretty serious audio guy when he bought them. I am just the second owner now but I plan on selling them

I agree--live acoustic music (the way it was for thousands of years or more) will never come from one point source (if there's more than one musician)--there is always a spatial soundstage and you need a minimum of two speakers (stereo) to give you a spatial musical representation. Not to mention that I need stereo so that there is one channel/speaker for each of my (main) two multiple personalities! :pQuote:

What you have is the 853A cabinet loaded with a 604D and it's corresponding crossover. I would say what you have is an "upgrade" from an 833A, and it's worth tens of thousands of Yen.
