What is the finished quanity from this recipe ? Enough for two ?
I use 2 cups boiling water to ? cup oats, and that makes big amounts for 2 servings. I don't add any salt until finished cooking re AB's directions on Good Eats...V
Thanks ! I'll be making the Oatmeal tonight !
Well, I tried the oatmeal last night, but unfortunately my T-well pilot went out. I need to adjust it up a bit. Anyway, the oatmeal was a beautiful color but a cold solid mass, so I'll try again tonight...

Well, I finally made the oatmeal. Since I've never had steel cut oats before I'm not sure on how it should be. It was very creamy but a little loose and it really didn't look like enough for two people. I used the 2 cups boiling water to 1/2 cup oats. I think I'll increase the oats to 3/4 cups. I added dried orange flavored cranberries and 1 teas. vanilla extract and topped with warm maple syrup it was quite tasty.

I made the oatmeal over the weekend, and it was great. Mine was very thick and I added dried apricots and dried cherries at the beginning. After it was cooked I added some honey, and it was very good. It did make two servings, and I finished the second one this morning. I used one of my triple pots with tin foil over the top, I still don't have any lids. Thanks so much for the recipe, it's a keeper.
My first batch was thick and creamy but I was in such an early morning fog that I forgot to add anything to it and ate it plain...you know what ? It was delicious !
Lori,
I put mine in around 8PM and took it out around 8AM. It was still loose so I put it over the pilot for 1/2 hour then it was a little better but sticking to the bottom. I'm going to make it again and put it over the pilot right from the start.

Mine was in one half of a double pot slightly off center in the well. Truthfully, it was amazing how beautiful the oatmeal was...tonight I'll add raisins or dried cherries. Now, if only there was a way to do my eggs over easy in a similar fashion....
I'm going to make it again tonight for the AM. using more oats to the 2 cups water and I'll see how it turns out. I use the triple pot but don't place right over the pilot. Do you think that might have something to do with how mine turned out?
It might. How long was it cooking? I put mine in about 10:30 pm and opened it up around 8 am. Mine was right over the pilot light with tin foil over the pot and the cover over the thermowell.
Been waiting for this for months... Heading down to the kitchen to light the T-well pilot. Gonna put some oats in the triple pot and have oatmeal and real coffee cooked on the Chambers tomorrow morning!
And not a minute too soon. We're fresh out of girl scout cookies.
Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking....

Lowracer,
Hubby is a "thin mints guy" too. Not me, I'm a "all abouts gal".
On Irish Oatmeal; somethings I've learned-- If it cooks for a long time(over 7+ hours) it seems to dry out. If you add dried fruit it dries out faster. I've learned if I'm going to sleep late I add a tad more water.
Also your pilot light adjustment has a lot to do with cook time & heat.I eventually realized my flame height was too high and way too orange and adjusted it to a nice small 3/8" blue cone as stated in the service manual.
It's a process of getting to know your Chambers.
Also, if your oats are "thicker" than you like, add some milk.
Asfan, it should be enough for 2 people.
Serving size being a cereal bowl.
Let us know how it turns out!!

Oatmeal's in the T-Well. Didn't have any McCann's on hand, but we did have some Kroger brand oats, the raw stuff not the instant or 5 minute variety. Two cups of water boiled on the stove top, then into the thermowell with the oats in a triple pot on a nice 3/8" blue pilot flame.
What is the safety impact if the pilot flame blows out overnight? Should I crack a window?
Yea Lowracer, new member of the Oatmeal Club...as soon as you get McCains tell us the difference between the two kinds cooked in the t-well...v
The Kroger rolled oats turned into an oat-flavored liquid overnight. My wife just laughed, because she knew that there's a difference between steel-cut oats and rolled oats. But she ate the whole bowl anyway. It was surprisingly very hot despite having cooked only on the pilot, and tasted pretty good but I'm afraid that now having eaten food cooked in an aluminum pot I've quite forgotten what I was going to write next. Always the Aggie...v
Didn't the Aggies win last night?
I know Lowracer won't know, no TV, maybe someone else can get him the score.

We bought the Irish Steel-Cut oats at the store tonight. Got 'em in boiling water in the well, pilot on. We'll see how it goes. Stove's been getting quite the workout today.
